閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的四個選項(A、B、C和D)中,選出最佳選項。

If the crust (外殼) of the earth were not pretty solid (堅固的), it would be shaking about and moving up and down frequently. However, there are places in the rocks of the earth's crust where it isn't strongly held together—where faults exist. Along the faults, one rock might push against another with great force. The energy is changed to vibration in the rocks, so they begin to shake and we have an earthquake!
The most famous one in North America was the San Francisco earthquake of 1906. Seven hundred people died and property (財產(chǎn)) damage amounted to about $425,000,000.The greatest destruction came from the fires that followed the quake.
One of the most famous earthquakes in Europe took place in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1755. The city was destroyed and at least thirty thousand people were killed. In 1908, in Calabria and Sicily, a quake killed about seventyfive thousand people. In 1915, in central Italy, hundreds of towns and villages were damaged and thirty thousand people were killed.
Two great earthquakes that caused great damage in Asia took place in Tokyo, Japan, and in Gansu Province in China. The Tokyo quake of 1923 killed more than one hundred thousand people and destroyed the city and the city of Yokohama, too. The Chinese quake in 1920 covered more than three hundred square miles and killed about two hundred thousand people.

D.famous earthquakes in the world
(2)The underlined word “vibration” in the first paragraph probably means “_______”.

(3)Which of the following earthquakes killed the most people?

B.The earthquake in Lisbon, Portugal.
C.The earthquake in Calabria and Sicily.

B.there were 75,000 people killed in the San Francisco earthquake
C.the city of Yokohama was not greatly influenced by the Tokyo quake
D.the fires following the San Francisco earthquake caused more damage than the earthquake did

根據(jù)第三段中的“…in Calabria and Sicily, a quake killed about seventy-five thousand people.”可知,C項正確。
(4)考查細(xì)節(jié)理解。根據(jù)第二段中的“The greatest destruction came from the fires that followed the quake.”可知,D項正確。

India has many festivals, with some celebrations that last for weeks. However, none of them come even close to Holi, India's most colorful and fun festival. Celebrated on the day following the full moon, this year's festival happens to be on March 19th.
As with most Indian festivals, this one also has many different folk stories. Most of them center around the success of good over evil. The most popular one is about a king, who hates his son Prahlada for loving the creator of the Universe-Lord Vishnu. When every attempt to stop him fails, his sister, Holika believed to be immune (免疫的) to fire, joins in the effort by inviting the young boy to sit with her inside a huge fire. Helped by the power of Lord Vishnu, Prahlada escapes safely, while the evil Holika is burned to death. To remember this event, huge outdoor fires are lit in the night before Holi in order to clean the air of evil spirits and to celebrate the death of the evil.
So what's so great about this day? While there are some fun parades (游行) and folk songs and dance performances, the most fun of all is walking to the streets and splashing (潑灑) people with water guns and dry colors and even covering them with entire buckets of colored water. On this day, everybody is fair game, no matter how old or how young.
At about midday, the splashing comes to an end and people living close to oceans or rivers usually take a bath in the water to clean themselves before going home to a delicious homemade big dinner and a welldeserved short sleep, following this full day of fun and activities.
(1)Why does the king dislike his son Prahlada?
A.Because Prahlada doesn't love him.
B.Because Prahlada is rude to Holika.
C.Because Prahlada loves Lord Vishnu.
D.Because Prahlada concentrates on his own success.
(2)Prahlada gets out of danger ________.
A.with the help of Lord Vishnu
B.because of his good luck
C.by beating his aunt Holika
D.using his amazing talent
(3)The underlined phrase“fair game”in Paragraph 3 refers to a person who ________.
A.fights against others fairly
B.enjoys splashing people
C.plays a trick on others
D.is the aim of splashing water
(4)After the fun activities, people living close to oceans or rivers often take a bath because ________.
A.they have got dirty with dry colors and colored water
B.going home with colored water means bad luck
C.they believe clean water will bring good luck
D.taking a bath shows their true love for Lord Vishnu

【題目】Do you want to hurt the person back, or do you hold it against them for the rest of your life when somebody hurts you? If you answered “yes” to these questions, know that you are like most people. To forgive is something that most people generally have difficulty with.

People don’t forgive readily, because it is easier to hate than to forgive. Some people thing to forgive is a sign of weakness, but actually to forgive takes courage and effort.

Forgiveness is a gift from a generous heart. It is not a reward for good behavior. It is not based on whether the person deserves it or whether the person has asked for it.

Besides, forgiveness is an act and a process, which often takes time. The deeper your pan, the longer it usually takes to completely forgive. It is an act because it is not just the words you say, but also your actions which show if you’ve truly forgiven someone.

Forgiveness is necessary because it releases you from the burden of bitterness and hate. It takes a lot of energy to hate and to keep that hate in place. Hate puts unnecessary stress on your body. It is a well-known fact, proven by numerous studies, that bitterness and hate can actually make you sick. The moment that affected people forgive and let go of their hate, they will start to get well. Forgiveness brings freedom, whereas revenge is neither sweet nor satisfying.

I have personal experience of this. I used to be very cynical about life and didn’t forgive easily. At the time, I also struggled in every area of my life. Things just didn’t seem to work out for me. It is as if everything that could go wrong. Always went wrong. That was until somebody told me to take a look at my attitude. And when I forgave those who wronged me and changed my attitude, everything else changed. It didn’t happen overnight. It took a while, but I could see and feel the difference.

Are things not working out in your life, despite you doing all the “right” things? Is it possible that you are holding “unforgiving” in your heart? It is worth thinking about. By Leonard J. Roost.

1Why is it hard for people to forgive?

A .Forgiveness means not giving in.

B. Forgiveness depends on good behavior.

C. Forgiveness needs good will from both sides.

A. Not believing the goodness of others.

B. Making comments on others.

C. Showing kindness to others.
