Kilimanjaro Climb : a Rite of Passage for Father and Son
Climbing Kilimanjaro is a transformational experience for many people. The things that make the mountain hard are the very things that make it so powerful. In the case of my son Josh and I,the walk up Kilimanjaro proved a powerful symbol ofhis transition into manhood, and a great change in our relationship.
Day three on the mountain, Josh was hit with massive headaches. He told me every step felt like a nail driving into his head. And then, on the night we climbed the crater rim, less than 40 minutes from the summit, Josh fell. I was walking ahead, and did not even see it. He was so exhausted that he could not get up. He recalled our guides, debating whether or not they should take him straight down. Josh snapped out of it. He forced himself to his feet, shook the guides off. He set his face towards the peak and just kept marching. Near the summit he caught up with me and we reached the peak together.
“ I’ve never been in so much pain and so happy at the same time,,,he said, as we sat side by side on the frozen rock and looked down over Africa. “You know, in the past when we’d go on camping and rafting trips, you guided and took care of me through it all. But on Kilimanjaro it was different. From the bottom up, I climbed it. I never feltlike a kid, even when 1 was in pain. You never acted like a parent.”
“That’s not quite true,”I replied. “When you told me that on the summit you fell-and I did not even notice, my first thought was, ‘Oh my God! I’m such an awful parent!’ But then it hit me, ‘He got himself up. He walked to the peak on his own. He didn't need me to help.,”
I realized as I spoke that two people had died that night on Kilimanjaro. A child and a parent. It wasjust two friends who walked down the mountain together.

All the definitions(定義) and facts in a dictionary or book do not convey what friendship is really about. It cannot be understood through   36 . The only way to understand friendship is through experience, which   37  all the senses.
Friendship can be seen. It is seen in an old couple sitting in the park holding hands. It is seen in a child freely   38  the last cookie. It is not   39  to see friendship; it is always there for eyes that can see.
Friendship can be heard. It is heard in the words of two friends squeezing in lunch together on an extremely   40  day although they have a lot of things to do. It is the way they   41  each other, not the words. Friendship can be heard by those willing to listen.
Friendship is   42  in a touch. It is a pat on the back from a teammate, a high five between classes, and the wet kiss from the family dog. The touch   43  more than words or gestures. It is   44  understood and clearly shows the feelings.
Friendship has a taste. It tastes like homemade bread: the ingredients all measured and planned, then carefully   45 , then the quiet   46  as the dough(生面團(tuán)) rises. Hot from the oven, the bread tastes more than the sum of its ingredients   47  there are the thoughts of the baker as her hands mix the flour or her   48  as she waits for the dough to rise.  49  and unmeasured, this is the ingredient that   50 . Friendship has a smell. It smells like the slightly burnt cookies your brother made especially for you. It smells like your home when   52  it after being away for a long tome. Friendship has   53  smells.
Finally, more than the other senses, friendship is a(n)  54  of the heart. It is the language of the heart --- a language that, whether seen, felt, heard, or tasted, is understood by the   55 . Like air fills the lungs, friendship fills the heart, allowing us to experience the best life has to offer: a friend.

Mistakes are a part of life. To err is human. Failure is also a part of life, not the end of life. Be happy facing life’s challenges. When you make the effort to be happy and to improve your life, you are actually rewarded along the way.
Life is like a game and maybe you can award points for every effort that has been a success for you. Try it. Add ten points for every achievement. And when you have reached 50 points, just yell, “Hey, I’ve won!” and give yourself a reward. If you happen to have missed your points for whatever reason, tell yourself, “Well, I tried!” which is better than not trying at all. Don’t let it be said you didn’t try.
What is it that you want to make yourself happy? Actually happiness means different things to different people. For example, an athlete will be happy winning his first race. For a new mother happiness would be seeing her baby’s first steps. Happiness for a poor person would mean having a meal just for today. So happiness for you is really something simple that you want for yourself.
It really doesn’t have to be big. As a matter of fact, you should be always realistic(現(xiàn)實(shí)的). Make the best out of every given situation. If you expect a certain result from a situation and it does not happen, don’t get despondent. This just means trying harder next time. We all have in us the power to succeed. Don’t let “give up” be a part of your vocabulary.
小題1:By saying “To err is human”, the author means that____________.
A.human beings should try to avoid making mistakes
B.no one is perfect and everyone makes mistakes
C.mistakes and failures make up our life
D.human beings make mistakes easily
小題2:What’s the main idea of Paragraph 2?
A.Try to reach 50 points.B.Try to get as many points as you can.
C.Award yourself for your successD.Don’t be afraid of missing your points.
小題3:The author proves his idea in Paragraph 3 through____________.
A.examplesB.numbersC.experimentsD.stories
小題4:The underlined word “despondent” in the last paragraph means____________.
A.frightenedB.disappointedC.surprisedD.excited

Are morning people born or made? In my case it was definitely made. In my early 20s, I hardly went to bed before midnight, and I would always get up late the next morning.
But after a while I couldn’t ignore the high relationship between success and rising early. On those rare occasions where I did get up early, I noticed that my productivity (效率) was always higher. So I set out to become a habitual early riser. But whenever my alarm went off, my first thought was always to stop that noise and go back to sleep. Eventually some sleep research showed that my strategy was wrong.
The most common wrong strategy is this: supposing you’re going to get up earlier, you’d better go to bed earlier. It sounds very reasonable, but will usually fail.
There are two main schools (流派) of thought on sleep patterns. One is that you should go to bed and get up at the same time every day. The second school says you should go to bed when you’re tired and get up when you naturally wake up. However, I have found both are wrong if you care about productivity. If you sleep at fixed hours, you’ll sometimes go to bed when you aren’t sleepy enough. You’re wasting time lying in bed awake.
My solution is to combine both methods. I go to bed when I’m sleepy and get up with an alarm clock at a fixed time. So I always get up at the same time (in my case 5 a.m.), but I go to bed at different times every night.
However, going to bed only when I’m sleepy, and getting up at a fixed time every morning are my ways. If you want to become an early riser, you can try your own.
小題1:According to the passage, the underlined phrase refers to ________.
A.people who stay up until the next morning
B.people who get up early in the morning
C.people who feel sleepy in the morning
D.people whose productivity is the lowest in the morning
小題2:Why did the author want to become a habitual early riser?
A.Because he / she wanted to have more sleep time.
B.Because he / she wanted to do morning exercise.
C.Because he / she wanted to test which school is better.
D.Because he / she found that the productivity was higher.
小題3:The author experienced all the following EXCEPT ________.
A.going to bed after midnight
B.a(chǎn)sking scholars for advice on sleeping habits
C.getting up early occasionally
D.pressing off the alarm to go on sleeping
小題4:What’s the author’s sleep pattern?
A.Going to bed early and getting up early.
B.Going to bed late and getting up late.
C.Going to bed when sleepy and getting up at a fixed early time.
D.Going to bed early and getting up late.
小題5:The passage is mainly about ________.
A.main schools of thought on sleep patternsB.how to have a good sleep
C.wrong strategies for getting up earlyD.how to become an early riser

Letters to the next president
Dear Mr. President:
I would like to personally thank you for your time and concern for our great country. I would like to take a few minutes to address a few concerns that I have with the United States.
First of all, I would like to address the war. In my opinion, we should have never been involved with Iraq to the extent that we are now. I believe we should pull our troops out. However, I think there should be a time table that we follow but the time table should not be released(發(fā)布) because the enemy does not need to know when we are going to pull out. Also, the war takes out a ton of our money, which leads me to my next issue.
The economy right now, in the opinion of many Americans is the biggest issue with which we are facing right now. No one can predict what will happen one day or the next. The obvious thing to do is to put 700 billion dollars in the economy, but that bill failed and was rejected by the House of Representatives(眾議院). Instead of putting 700 billion dollars in, I think the money should be equally distributed among Americans to pay off their debts. I'm not sure if this would work, but I think it is a positive alternative(替代) we could take.
My final issue I would like to call to your attention is teacher's salaries. The high school students of today are America's future. In a way, America's future depends greatly on the high school teachers of America. Saying this, it is sad that teacher's salaries are where they are. While teachers are working harder and harder every day to teach high school students, CEO's of big companies that are driving our countries economy into the ground are getting bonuses. I'm not saying that teacher's salaries should be the same of CEO's of companies, but I do strongly believe that action should be taken to increase the salaries of teachers because they have one of the most important jobs in America - - preparing our country for the future.
Once again, thank you for your time and your effort you put in to making this great country a better place.
Sincerely, Walker

We all know that some things are obviously right. For example, it is right to be   1  to other people. It is also right to look after the environment. Some things are   2  wrong, too. For instance, we should not hurt or bully(欺負(fù))others, nor should we litter. Rules often tell us what is right or wrong.
Rules can help the public make the right   3 , and remain safe. Car drivers have to obey traffic regulations that tell them the right things to do on the road to avoid crashes. Cyclists who give signals before turning or stopping help prevent   4 .
If people follow rules without taking other matters into consideration, it will be   5 for them to form what is sometimes called a “black and white” view (黑白分明的觀點(diǎn)). For example, they may believe that people should always tell the truth, and that lying is   6  acceptable. Such people always stick to their views, even if it means that they may get into  7 .
Sometimes it may not be so easy to know   8  what is right or wrong. Some people choose not to eat meat because they believe that it is   9  to eat animals, but others argue that they can eat meat and   10  be kind to animals; some insist that stealing is always wrong, but others think that one does not need to feel so guilty (有罪的) when stealing some food to eat, if he lives in a really poor area and he is starving.
Rules help us live together in harmony, because they show us the right way to treat others. However, some people argue that rules may be confusing, having observed that rules change all the time, and that some schools have some regulations and others have different ones---so who is to decide what is right?
