When I was about five years old, I used to watch a bird in the skies of southern Alberta from the Blackfoot Blood Reserve in northern Montana where I was born.I loved this bird; I would    36 him for hours. He would    37  effortlessly in that gigantic sky, or he would come down and light on the   38 and float there beautifully.Sometimes when I watched him, he would not make a sound and liked to move   39  into the grasses. We called him meksikatsi, which in the Blackfoot language   40  “pink-colored feet”; meksikatsi and I became very good friends.
The bird had a very particular significance to me   41  I desperately wanted to be able to fly too.I felt very much as if I was the kind of person who had been born into a world where    42  was impossible. And most of the things that I    43   about would not be possible for me but would be possible only for other people.
When I was ten years old, something unexpected   44 my life suddenly.I found myself become an  45 child in a family I was not born into; I found myself in a   46 position that many native Americans find themselves in, living in a city that they do not understand at all, not in another culture but   47 two cultures.
A teacher of the English language told me that meksikatsi was not called meksikatsi, even though that is what   48 people have called that bird for thousands of years.Meksikatsi, he said, was really “duck”.I was very  49 with English.I could not understand it.First of all, the bird did not look like “duck”, and when it made a    50  , it did not sound like “duck”, I was even more   51  when I found out that the meaning of the verb “to duck” came from the bird.
As I   52 to understand English better, I understand that it made a great deal of    53   , but I never forgot that meksikatsi made a different kind of meaning.I   54  that languages are not just different words for the same things but totally different    55  , totally different ways of experiencing and looking at the world.

All the Lortons’ farm animals – the cows and the goats, the ducks and the chickens, got along well with Roger—a llama(美洲駝). But since llamas are used to thinking of animals like coyotes(土狼) and dogs as threats, it took Roger a few weeks to accept the family dog.
Roger protects the sheep and lambs in two ways. First, he keeps the sheep together. A hungry coyote will try to scatter(分散) the flock and then pick off a weak or small animal that has become separated from the rest. But when a coyote threatens the Lorton’s sheep, they all run to Roger, depending on him to defend them.
And he does, with his second defense: confronting(對(duì)抗) the coyote. Llamas are very curious and will run at top speed to investigate anything that looks interesting. When a coyote sees a three-hundred-pound llama rushing toward it, the coyote will not usually wait around to see what the llama wants.
And once a llama realizes that a coyote is threatening the flock, the llama will stand between the coyote and the sheep to defend them. Often, the llama will charge toward the coyote with its head down. As it runs, it will sometimes call out an alarm to the flock in a high-pitched voice. Since Roger’s arrival, coyotes haven’t gotten any sheep from the Lortons.

My friend Robert started a new job this week and he’s been in the training class for two days. The employer has a very strict dress code—dark blue shirts and pants.
On the first day, an older gentleman in his class did not have the proper clothes and he was strictly told that he would be fired if he didn’t have the right clothes the next day. He explained, “Sir, I had been told about this, but because of my larger size, it’s sometimes difficult to find the right clothing for a price I can afford.”
Last night, Robert and I decided that this old man shouldn’t lose the chance of work simply because he couldn’t afford the clothes. I had some cash on hand and Robert took it with him this morning just in case it was needed.
When training started this morning, the trainer was ready to fire the older gentleman. “You have 10 minutes to be in proper clothes,” he was told. At this point, Robert spoke up and asked if he could have 10 minutes to get him the clothes. He then ran out to the store and bought the proper-sized pants and a shirt; he returned with both and gave them to the older man.
The older gentleman began to cry and told him that he couldn’t accept such a gift from a stranger. Robert told him he had to because he had lost the receipt(收據(jù)) and couldn’t return them—a little white lie. The pants were a perfect fit, the shirt was a bit tight but he was able to keep his job.
“My wife and I tried to gather together some money last night, but we didn’t have enough to buy the clothes,” he told Robert. “It’s unbelievable to me that a person would do such a thing for only knowing me a day!”
More unbelievable is how good it has made Robert and me feel to do this.
小題1:If the older man did not have the proper clothes, he would _____.
A.be punishedB.be offered another jobC.put off the training classD.lose his job
小題2:The money which was paid for the clothes was _____.
A.the trainer’sB.the older man’sC.the writer’s D.Robert’s
小題3: How did Robert persuade the older man to accept the clothes?
A.He told the older man that he would lose his job if he did not take them.
B.He told a lie that the clothes didn’t fit himself.
C.He told the older man that he could save money and return it later.
D.He told the older man that he had no way to send them back.
小題4:What might be the best title for the passage?
A.Proper clothes for a strangerB.Fight against strict rules
C.A strange employerD.An unbelievable thing

One hot night last July, when our new baby wouldn’t or couldn’t sleep, I tried everything I could think of: a warm bottle, songs gentle rocking. Nothing would settle him. Guessing that I had a long night ahead of me, I brought a portable TV into his room, figuring that watching the late movie was as good a way as any to kill of the hours till dawn. To my surprise, as soon as the TV lit up, the baby quieted right down, and his little eyes focused brightly on the tube. Not to waste an opportunity for sleep, I then tiptoed out of the room, leaving him to watch the actors celebrate John Bellushi’s forty-fifth birthday.
My wife and I heard none of the baby that night, and the next morning when I went into his room, I found him still watching TV himself.
I found in my baby’s behavior a symbol of the new generation. My wife and I had given him some books to examine, but he merely spit upon them. When we read to him, he did not feel comfortable. And so it is in the schools. We find that our students don’t read and they look down upon reading and scold those of us who teach it. All they want to do is watch TV. After this experience with the baby, however, I have reached a conclusion: “Let them watch it!” If television is that much more attractive to children than books, why should we fight about it? Let them watch it all they want!

C.They would rather watch TV than read books.

Two policemen stopped Andrew Kershaw in his sports car one night, because he was speeding in the street of the town. The young man was very drunk. He knew he was in trouble, so he decided to make fun of them. He was a law-student at the university, so he knew the law very well, better than most people.
When the policemen came to his car, Andrew asked one of the policemen to write down in his notebook everything they said. The policeman had to do this because it is the law, although people don’t usually know it. The policeman tested Andrew’s breath and the breathalyser showed that he had too much alcoho1(乙醇)in his blood. This all took a long time because the policeman had to write down everything that he or the policeman said.
In the end, by law, the policeman had to ask Andrew if he wanted to say anything. Andrew decided that he had two things to say and the policemen had to write down. The first thing was “Please don’t hit me again, officer!” And the second thing was :" Does the other officer want £5,too?" Of course, the poor policeman had to read this in court, in front of the judge, and he was very embarrassed (難堪). Andrew, who was in court, thought it was very funny, until the judge took away his licence for a year and fined him £100, £90 for drunk driving, and £10 for his rudeness!
