科目:高中英語(yǔ) 來(lái)源:不詳 題型:閱讀理解

However wealthy we may be, we can never find enough hours in the day to do everything we want. Economics deals with this problem through the concept of opportunity cost, which simply refers to whether someone’s time or money could be better spent on something else.
Every hour of our time has a value. For every hour we work at one job we could quite easily be doing another, or be sleeping or watching a film. Each of these options has a different opportunity cost—namely, what they cost us in missed opportunities.
Say you intend to watch a football match but the tickets are expensive and it will take you a couple of hours to get to and from the stadium. Why not, you might reason, watch the game from home and use the leftover money and time to have dinner with friends? This—the alternative use of your cash and time—is the opportunity cost.
For economists, every decision is made by knowledge of what one must forgo—in terms of money and enjoyment—in order to take it up. By knowing precisely what you are receiving and what you are missing out on, you ought to be able to make better-informed, more reasonable decisions. Consider that most famous economic rule of all: there’s no such thing as a free lunch. Even if someone offers to take you out to lunch for free, the time you will spend in the restaurant still costs you something in terms of forgone opportunities.
Some people find the idea of opportunity cost extremely discouraging: imagine spending your entire life calculating whether your time would be better spent elsewhere doing something more profitable or enjoyable. Yet, in a sense it’s human nature to do precisely that—we assess the advantages and disadvantages of decisions all the time.
In the business world, a popular phrase is “value for money.” People want their cash to go as far as possible. However, another is fast obtaining an advantage: “value for time.” The biggest restriction on our resources is the number of hours we can devote to something, so we look to maximize the return we get on our investment of time. By reading this passage you are giving over a bit of your time which could be spent doing other activities, such as sleeping and eating. In return, however, this passage will help you to think like an economist, closely considering the opportunity cost of each of your decisions.
小題1:According to the passage, the concept of “opportunity cost” is applied to ________.
A.making more money
B.taking more opportunities
C.reducing missed opportunities
D.weighing the choice of opportunities
小題2:The “l(fā)eftover ... time” in Paragraph 3 probably refers to the time ________.

小題3:What are forgone opportunities?
A.Opportunities you forget in decision-making.
B.Opportunities you give up for better ones.
C.Opportunities you miss accidentally.
D.Opportunities you make up for.

There are going to be moments in life when you must make very important decisions. You will find many people      to offer you advice if you ask for it (and even if you don’t), but always remember that the life you     is yours and nobody else’s. It’s important to decide for yourself what’s important to you and what you want before you      others. Because while there will be times      outside advice proves wise, there will be at least as many times when it proves completely     . The only way to really evaluate other folks’ advice is to first learn everything that you can about whatever challenge you are     . Once you’ve done that, in most cases you should be able to make a wise decision      anyway.
You were      with the ability to decide what is and what isn’t in your best interest. Most of the time, you will make the right decision and      the appropriate action, and in thinking for yourself, you will become far more successful than if you had gone against your own     .
Early on in my investment career, I made the mistake of      a few important business decisions on colleagues’ opinions instead of conducting the      necessary to make a wise decision. It wasn’t due to      on my part; no one could ever accuse me of that. But, being      to Wall Street, I intended to suppose that my more senior      knew more than I did, and so I      too much significance to their opinions.
You know what happened? Each of those investments ended in     . Eventually I stopped allowing myself to be influenced by      and began doing the work myself and making my own decisions. It took me until I was almost 30 years old to      this—it’s never too late for a person to change his approach both to      and to life.

My son Tom taught me a beautiful lesson today. He is three years old and it is amazing watching him grow up.
He called out to me today saying, “Papa, sit”. That usually means        everything and going next to him and sitting down to play with him. I did that, as he can be        and will not stop calling out until I        . He was playing with beads (珠子), pushing a string through them, which is a great exercise to help        fine motor skills. Then, after he finished playing with the beads, it was time to put them back in the box that they are stored in. I saw him        pick up each bead, look at it        it were made of chocolate and then placed it into its box.
With over a hundred beads to go, I was getting        . “What a long time it will take! Why cannot he         ten beads in one go and drop them in?” said my anxious mind. I noticed that he did this with as much        as he had while we were playing. I didn’t see any        between his play and his putting away the toy. Obviously he enjoyed both.
Then it suddenly        me that this boy was enjoying the whole        . The journey was his goal. For him the        was in the game and after the game, not just in the fun part. What a great perspective: to live each moment as it is the        moment; to do each task as it is the most awesome task. Nothing else       .
Looking at how        my son was putting beads into the box        me that the process was the goal. The joy of pilgrimage (朝圣) is not in getting there but in every        of the journey.
This is what living in the NOW is all        . Tom, my son, was showing me that it was about thoroughly enjoying every moment with        love and peace.

Reading to dogs is an unusual way to help children improve their literacy skills. With their shining brown eyes, wagging tails, and unconditional love, dogs can provide the nonjudgmental listeners needed for a beginning reader to gain confidence, according to Intermountain Therapy Animals (ITA) in Salt Lake City. The group says it is the first program in the country to use dogs to help develop literacy in children, with the introduction of Reading Education Assistance Dogs(READ).
The Salt Lake City Public Library is sold on the idea. “Literacy specialists admit that children who read below the level of their fellow pupils are often afraid of reading aloud in a group, often have lower self-respect, and regard reading as a headache,” said Lisa Myron, manager of the children’s department.
Last November, the two groups started “Dog Day Afternoon” in the children's department of the main library. About 25 children attended each of the four Saturday-afternoon classes, reading for half an hour. Those who attended three of the four classes received a “paw graphed” book at the last class.
The program was so successful that the library plans to repeat it in April, according to Dana Thumpowsky, public relations manager.

It was Thanksgiving morning. I was busy preparing the traditional Thanksgiving turkey when the doorbell rang. I opened the front door and saw two small children in rags huddling together on the top step.
“Any old papers, lady?” asked one of them.
I was busy. I wanted to say “no” until I looked down at their feet. They were wearing thin little sandals (涼鞋), wet with heavy snow.
“Come in and I’ll make you a cup of hot cocoa.”
They walked over and sat down at the table. Their wet sandals left marks upon the floor. I saved them cocoa and bread to fight against the cold outside. Then I went back to the kitchen and started cooking.
The silence in the front room struck me. I looked in. The girl held the empty cup in her hands, looking at it. The boy asked in a flat voice, “Lady, are you rich?”
“Am I rich? Pity, no!”
I looked at my worn-out slipcovers (椅套). The girl put her cup back in its saucer (茶碟)carefully and said, “Your cups match your saucers.” They left after that, holding their papers against the wind. They had reminded me that I had so much for which to be grateful.
Plain blue china cups and saucers were only worth five pence. But they matched.
I tasted the potatoes and stirred the meat soup. Potatoes and brown meat soup, a roof over our heads, my man with a regular job, these matched, too.
I moved the chairs back from the fire and cleaned the living room. The muddy marks of little sandals were still wet upon my floor. Let them be for a while, I thought, just in case I should begin to forget how rich I am.
小題1:The writer let the two children come in and served them well because ______.
A.she wanted to sell old papers to them
B.she wanted to give them some presents
C.she showed great pity and care on them
D.she wanted to show her thanks to them

A.show that she was a kind-hearted lady
B.remind her she shouldn’t forget how rich she was
C.leave room for readers to think about what being rich is
D.call up her memories of the good old days
小題3:It can be inferred from the text that whether you are rich depends on _______.
A.how much money you have made
B.what attitude you have had toward life
C.the way you help others
D.your social relationship

On the night of November 14, 1978,a six-year-old Korean boy was flying to the United  States. All he knew was that he was on a plane heading for somewhere. The plane landed at  Kennedy International Airport, where he was greeted by a family. This young boy was me.
I have grown up in a town where there were few Asians, so I stuck out in the crowd. I  made friends quickly and they treated me just like anyone else. You may ask if anyone made  fun of my appearance. Well, of course, I met that' kind of person. I just shrugged it off.
