We calmed down and did the experiment, again. But our hearts were still __37____ rapidly even after we walked out of the lab.
But my bad __38___ didn't end there! Since all __39     was focused on the flames while we were in the lab, I didn't see the liquid falling onto my trousers.

It’s easy to see how to help some people, but what about those whose needs are not so clear? This story may have happened not long ago--- but it was a lesson which has stayed with me and helped me ever since.
It was Thanksgiving and I was volunteering with my parents at a shelter for the needy. We served hot food to whoever came in. Most of our dinners looked like they had been having hard times; their clothes were worn out and dirty. Then, a man came in, who looked anything but needy. He was well dressed. I wondered what he was doing there and my jaw (下巴) dropped in amazement when he joined the line for food. The closer he came to my service station , the more I muttered (小聲抱怨). What was this man doing? Surely he wasn’t going to take food which was meant for those who were really in need!
Then my mother quietly took me to one side. She said, “You have thought that the needs of the people who come here must be purely physical, hunger, etc. And this gentleman doesn’t seem to have any of those problems. But what if his needs are emotional(情感的)? What if he needs comfort, friends, or just to be among other human beings? Her words hit me like a ton of bricks! I felt like I should apologize to the man--- but I didn’t.
About a week later the shelter received a large donation from an anonymous source. I can’t help but wonder if it came from that man.
Now, whenever I meet someone I remember my mother’s lesson and try to send kindness their way, no matter how they look. Needs aren’t always seen. But kindness always makes a difference.

Last year, around Labor Day, I read a “Happy Ad” in our local newspaper. There was a lady in a local nursing home, who was celebrating her 90th birthday and her family wanted everyone to know about it. It said that if you wanted to drop her a line, here was her address. So I did. I found a birthday card and dropped her a short note, wishing her a happy birthday.
A week or so later, someone knocked at my front door. I opened the door and found a middle-aged man standing on my doorstep. He introduced himself as the son of this woman to whom I had sent the card. He explained that he just wanted to drop by in person and thank me for sending such a nice card to his mom. Apparently, like many older folks, she did not receive much mail and was quite excited to receive mine. I just didn’t know what to say. I told him it was my pleasure and that I hoped his mom had enjoyed her birthday.
That year, I did not send out any Christmas cards, except to this lovely old lady in the nursing home. I just told her that I was thinking about her and hoped that she had a nice holiday. I sent her a Valentine and also a couple of notes in between. I just thought she might like to have someone write to her, to get some mail.
She passed away a couple of months ago. I never met this lady, but I did keep her and her family in my thoughts. I dropped them a line of sympathy. I hope that my few little notes were enough to brighten a couple of her days here on earth.

All day, I seem to remember, I played on the sands with strange   27  children. We made houses and gardens, and   28  the tide destroy them. When the tide went out, we climbed over the rocks and looked down at the fish in the rock-pools.
In those days the sun seemed to shine always   29  and the water was always warm. Sometimes we left beach and walked in the country,   30  ruined houses and dark woods and climbing trees. There were sweets in one’s pockets or good places where one could   31  ice creams. Each day seemed a life-time.
32 I am now thirty-five years old, my idea of a good  holiday is much the same as it was.  I   33   like the sun and warm sand and the sound of   34  beating (拍打) the rocks. I no longer wish to   35   any sand house or sand garden, and I dislike sweets.   36  , I still love the sea and often feel sand running through my fingers.
Sometimes I  37  what my ideal(理想的) holiday will be like when I am  old .  38  I want to do then, perhaps, will be to lie in bed, reading books about  39  who make houses and gardens with sands, who watch the incoming tide, who make themselves  40 on too many ices creams.
