A
My father came to the United States as a Ukrainian immigrant (移民)when he was 14 years old. Unable to speak English but willing to do anything to succeed, he learned the language, and became a barber. He put his two daughters, my sister and me, through college during a time when most people thought that women didn’t need an education and that they should be satisfied by getting married and having children.
I was preparing to get married and my father was trying to practice the polka, a must at any Ukrainian wedding. But he couldn’t do it! He had lost the mobility(活動能力)in his leg and suffered a brain tumor(瘤). He was forced to retire as a result of paralysis(癱瘓)of his right arm and leg. Dad had always worked two jobs and spent his spare time working around the house. Now his life came to a sudden stop. Yet never once did he complain. He bought rubber balls and spent his days trying to regain his hand mobility by squeezing those balls over and over.
After his second brain operation, he chatted pleasantly in the hospital room until a nurse flew into the room, waving her finger at me, and yelling, “You’d better tell your father to stay in bed. He is paralyzed and will never walk again. I am sick of picking him up and you’d better warn him to stay put!” My father smiled. He spent a great deal of time on the floor that year, but he eventually got up and walked.
My father lived nineteen more years after that second brain operation. He bought himself a motorized scooter(單腳滑行車)and spent years moving around the streets of Philadelphia. He was proud, free and always smiling.

If you’ve decided on a career in the media, you should be sick to death with people telling you how competitive the industries are.
But that may mean that you will find it a little disappointing when you enter a place where perhaps no one will ask you your name, or say hello to you in the morning, and where you are being perhaps not paid to do a job.
There are a number of training schemes offered across the media, which are great routes in. Simon Winder was given his start in publishing by MacMillan’s training scheme. I was sent out to Africa and Asia for a couple of years, selling educational books. It was a terrible job in many ways but interesting training,” said Winder. Because he had learnt first-hand experience about the business of publishing, his training prepared him for a career in the industry. On his return to England, Winder made the move to a senior position at Penguin seven years age.
If you can’t get on to a training scheme, or get a paid job straight away, then ______________ will open up many opportunities to you. It is all about proving that you can do the job. “Identify companies and people whose programs you like, and then simply write to them,” Cinneck advised those wanting to break into television,” Offer to work for free if you possibly can, and the chances are you will impress with your hard work and ideas, and end up staying on in paid employment. That’s how practically every employee of Ten Alps ended up with the company.
Wherever you start out, if you work hard at what you do, your efforts will be rewarded. “Don’t focus on where you want to end up,” advised Ross, “You’ll know where that is when you’re there; just stay focused on the job in hand, and do that as well as you can.”

C
If you are a male and you are reading this, congratulations: you are a survivor. According to statistics, you are more than twice as likely to die of skin cancer than a woman, and nine times more likely to die of AIDS. Assuming you make it to the end of your natural term, about 78 years for men in Australia, you will die on average five years before a woman.
There are many reasons for this, typically, men take more risks than women and are more likely to drink and smoke but perhaps more importantly, men don’t go to the doctor.
“Men aren’t seeing doctors as often as they should,” says Dr. Gullotta, “This is particularly so for the over-40s, when diseases tend to strike.”
Gullotta says a healthy man should visit the doctor every year or two. For those over 45, it should be at least once a year.
Two months ago, Gullotta saw a 50-year-old man who had delayed doing anything about his smoker’s cough for a year.
“When I finally saw him it had already spread and he has since died from lung cancer,” he says, “Earlier detection and treatment may not have cured him, but it would have prolonged his life.”
According to a recent survey, 95% of women aged between 15 and early 40s see a doctor once a year, compared to 70% of men in the same age group.
“A lot of men think they are invincible(不可戰(zhàn)勝的),” Gullotta says. “They only come in when a friend drops dead on the golf course and they think, “Geez, if it could happen to him, __________.”
Then there is the ostrich approach, “some men are scared of what might be there and would rather not know,” says Dr. Ross Cartmill.
“Most men get their cars serviced more regularly than they service their bodies,” Cartmill says. He believes most diseases that commonly affect men could be addressed by preventive check-ups.
“Regular check-ups for men would inevitably place strain(緊張) on the public purse,” Cartmill says. “But prevention is cheaper in the long run than having to treat the diseases. Besides, the ultimate cost is far greater: it is called premature death.”
65..Why does the author congratulate his male readers at the beginning of the passage?
A. They are more likely to survive serious diseases today.
B. Their average life span has been considerably extended.
C. They have lived long enough to read this article.
D. They are sure to enjoy a longer and happier life.
66. What is the most important reason why men die five years earlier on average than women according to the author?
A. men drink and smoke much more than women
B. men don’t seek medical care as often as women
C. men aren’t as cautious as women in face of danger
D. men are more likely to suffer from fatal diseases
67. Which of the following best completes the sentence “Geez, if it could happen to him, _______”?
A. it could happen to me, too         B. I should avoid playing golf
C. I should consider myself lucky     D. it would be a big misfortune
68. What does Dr. Ross Cartmill mean by “the ostrich approach”?
A. a casual attitude towards one’s health conditions
B. a new therapy for certain psychological problems
C. refusal to get medical treatment for fear of the pain involved
D. unwillingness to find out about one’s disease because of fear

An old friend from California called from the airport(機場) to tell me that he had arrived. I was not able to leave the office, but I had made plans for his arrival. After explaining where my new house was, I told him that I had left the key under the doormat (門墊). Since I knew it would be pretty late before I could get home, I suggested that he make himself at home and help himself to anything that was in the refrigerator.
Two hours later my friend phoned me from the house. At the moment, he said, he was listening to some of my records after having had a delicious meal. Now, he said, he was drinking a glass of orange juice. When I asked him if he had had any difficulty finding the house, he answered that the only problem was that he had not been able to find the key under the doormat(門墊), but luckily, the living room window by the apple tree had been left open and he had climbed in through the window. I listened to all this in great surprise. There is no apple tree outside my window, but there is one by the living room window of my next door neighbor's house!
