The boy   37  around the rock, managing to move it out from the dirt. With much   38 , he tried to push the rock out of the sandbox. When the boy got the rock to the edge(邊緣) of the sandbox,   39 , he found that he couldn’t   40  it up and over the little wall. The rock was too   41  for his small body.

As he   42  to accept his failure, the little boy dug, pushed, and pried(撬動(dòng)), but every time he thought he had made some   43 , the rock rolled and then fell back into the sandbox. The little boy   44  again and again, but the only   45  was to have the rock roll back.

46 , he burst into tears. All this time the boy’s father   47  him from his living room. The moment the tears fell, a   48  voice rose above the boy’s head. It was his father.  49 , but firmly(堅(jiān)定地) he said, “Son, why didn’t you use all the   50  that you had? The boy replied with tears, “But I did, Daddy, I did! I   51  all that I had!” “No, son, you didn’t,”  52  the father kindly. “You didn’t   53  me to help you.” With that the father picked up the rock and   54  it out of the sandbox.

Eighty-year-old retired tailor, James McKay, spent Saturday night in jail after     thirty-year-old Keith Smith over the head       his walking stick. McKay's wife, Laurence told us that while McKay is usually a       person, he had been       to this act of violence by getting wet just once too often.

Smith lives above the McKays and it appears that not only is he a keen gardener, he is also a       collector. Unfortunately for him, the water he sent over his balcony every day ended up on the McKay's, or too often, on the McKays      .

“For the last fortnight, since Smith moved into the flat above us, we have hardly dared to go to our      ,” said Laurence. She added that it wasn't so much the water falling onto their balcony from Smith watering his plant       bothered them, it was more the way he cleaned his fish tanks. “We'd be       there happily reading our newspapers, when       so much water would come from above that we'd be as wet as if we'd       with our clothes on! Neither could we get rid of the       of fish!”

And on Saturday evening it was just too      . “It was James's birthday,” explained Laurence, “and I'd made him a birthday cake. The candles were a great sight as you can imagine, but James didn't get to blow them out.”      , Smith emptied one of his larger tanks over his balcony and both the McKays and the cake were wet      . Rarely had Laurence seen McKay move so fast. “I couldn't       him. He was up there in a flash. It was the fastest I'd seen him move since 1964.”

Smith is not going to take things further with the police. He has also promised to change his       from now on. And what of James McKay?       he left the police station, a large crowd of supporters sang him, “Happy Birthday”. “      the most exciting birthday      !” said the cheerful old man. “The best since my adolescence I'd say!”

One of my fondest memories as a child is going by the river and sitting idly on the bank. There I would   16   the peace and quiet, watch the water rush   17   and listen to the singing of birds and the rustling of   18   in the trees. I would also watch the bamboo trees   19   under pressure from the wind and watch them   20   gracefully to their original position after the wind had   21   .

When I think about the bamboo tree's ability to bounce back to its original position, the word "resilience" comes to mind. When used in   22   to a person this word means the ability to readily   23   from shock, depression or any other situation that stretches the limits of a person's   24   .

Life is a   29   of good times and bad times, happy moments and unhappy moments. The next time you are experiencing one of those bad times or unhappy   30   that take you close to your breaking point, bend,   31   don't break. Try your best not to let the situation get the best of you.

A   32   of hope will take you through the unpleasant ordeal (考驗(yàn)). With   33   for a better tomorrow or a better situation, things may not be as bad as they seem to be. The unpleasant ordeal may be easier to   34   if the final result is worth having.

If life gets   35   and you are at your breaking point, show resilience. Like the bamboo tree, bend, but don't break!
