The cultures of the East and the West really distinguish each other a lot. This is because the culture systems are two ______ systems on the whole.

The ______ of the eastern cultures is mainly from two countries: China and India. Both of the two cultures are gestated by rivers. In China, the mother river is the Yellow River _____ the Indian one is the Hindu River. These two cultures were developed for several thousand years and formed their own _____. Then in Dang Dynasty of China, the Chinese culture _____ went overseas to Japan, _____ into the Japanese society and shaped the Japanese culture nowadays. Though a bit different from the Chinese one, it belongs to the same ______.

When the two mother rivers gave birth to the eastern culture, another famous culture was ______ on the Mesopotamian Plain ---- the Mesopotamian Civilization. This civilization later on developed into the cultures of the Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome. And these two are well-known ______ the base of the European culture. Like the Chinese culture, the European one also ______ waters. When the colonists(殖民者) of England _____ in America, their culture went with them over the Atlantic Ocean. So the American culture doesn't _______ from the European one a lot.

At the same time, the difference of the language systems _______ the cultural differences. In the East, most languages belong to the pictographic language while the Western languages are mostly based on the Latin system, for example, the one I’m using to write this paper.

Other factors like human race difference counts as well. But what’s more, ______ the far distance and the steep areas between the East and West, the two cultures seldom communicate until recent centuries. So they grew up totally in their own ways with almost no _____ with the other.

A Simple Lesson

“Another bad day at school?” my father asked as I came into the room.

“How could you tell? I didn't shut the door heavily or anything,” I replied. Over the past two months I had either done this or thrown my backpack across the room every time I came home from school. Papa thinks it has something to do with moving to a new house.

“I know this move has been hard on you. Leaving your friends and cousins behind is tough,” Papa said, as he put his arm around my shoulder. “What you must remember is that, with a lot of hard work and some time, you will make new friends.”

“You don't know how hard it is. This year my baseball team would have won the championship. They won't even give me a chance to pitch (投球) here. All I get to play is right field, and that's the worst!”

Papa turned toward me. “Things will get better, I promise you. Let me ask you, do you know why you were named David Lorenzo?”

“Yes, your name is David and grandfather's name is Lorenzo.”

“Very good, and what makes your grandfather so important?”

“He was the first in the family to come to this country and all that,” I answered.

“That is only partly correct. Your grandfather was a very great man. In Mexico, he had been a teacher. When he came to America he could only get lowpaid labor jobs because he didn't speak the language. It took him two years before he spoke English well enough to be allowed to teach here, but he did it. He never complained because he knew change could be difficult. Did he ever tell you that?” my father asked.

I looked down at my feet, ashamed at my behavior. “No. That must have been hard,” I said sheepishly.

“Your grandfather taught me that if you let people see your talent, they will accept you for who you are. I want you to always remember what my father taught me, even if it takes a few years for people to see who you are,” said Papa.

All I could say was, “Okay.” Then I asked, “What should I do now?”

Laughing, Papa said, “How about you pitch a few to me? You need some work.”

1.Why was the author unhappy that day?

A.Because he moved to a new country.

B.Because his baseball team lost the game.

C.Because he wasn't offered a chance to pitch.

D.Because he quarreled with his friends at school.

2.The father successfully changed his son's mood by ________.

A.a(chǎn)sking him to train harder

B.playing baseball with him

C.telling his grandfather's story

D.introducing him some new friends

3.The underlined word “sheepishly” probably means ________.

A.shyly B.patiently

C.clumsily D.cautiously

4.What can we infer about the author?

A.He thinks his father lives in the past.

B.He'd rather live with his grandfather.

C.He will continue to dislike school and everything.

D.He will try his best to adapt to the new environment.

There was great excitement on the planet of Venus (金星). Venusian scientists managed to land a satellite on the planet Earth, and it has been sending back signals as well as photographs ever since.

The satellite was directed into an area known as Manhattan, named after the great Venusian astronomer Professor. Manhattan, who first discovered it with his telescope 20000 light years ago.

Because of excellent weather conditions and extremely strong signals, Venusian scientists were able to get valuable information as to feasibility (可行性) of a manned flying saucer landing on Earth. A press conference was held at the Venus Institute of Technology.

“We have come to the conclusion, based on last week's satellite landing,” Prof. Zog said, “that there is no life on Earth.”

“How do you know this?” the science reporter of the Venus Evening Star asked.

“For one thing, Earth's surface in the area of Manhattan is made up of solid concrete and nothing can grow there. For another, the atmosphere is filled with carbon monoxide (一氧化碳) and other deadly gases and nobody could possibly breathe this air and survive.”

“What does this mean as far as our flying saucer program is concerned?”

“We shall have to take our own oxygen with us, which means a much heavier flying saucer than originally planned.”

“Are there any other dangers that you discovered in your studies?”

“Take a look at this photo. You see this dark black cloud hovering (盤旋) over the surface of Earth? We don't know what it is made of, but it could give us a lot of trouble and we shall have further tests before we send a Venus Being there.”

“Over here you will notice what seems to be a river, but the satellite findings indicates it is polluted and the water is unfit to drink. This means we shall have to carry our own water, which will add even greater weight to the saucer.”

“If all you say is true, won't this set back the flying saucer program several years?”

“Yes, but we shall continue as soon as the Grubstart gives us the added funds(資金).” Profession. Zog replied.

1.According to the passage, the Venusian scientists succeeded in getting important information about ________.

A.the feasibility of landing a satellite on Earth

B.the possibility of making a firstrate flying saucer

C.the feasibility of sending a Venus Being to Earth

D.the possibility of directing a flying saucer into Manhattan

2.Why will the Venusian have to take their own oxygen with them when they carry out their flying saucer program because ________.

A.they need it in their way to the planet of Earth

B.the Earth's atmosphere is filled with deadly gases

C.there is a low level of oxygen for Venusians

D.there is no air on the planet of Earth

3.It can be inferred from the passage that ________.

A.landing a manned flying saucer on Earth will be carried out soon

B.Venusians will land on Earth to help to stop serious pollution

C.it's unnecessary to land a manned flying saucer on Earth at present

D.pollution on Earth makes it impossible for Venusians to survive there

4.Where can you probably read such a passage?

A.In a popular magazine.

B.In a fairy tale.

C.In an observation journal

D.In science fiction
