Spring is coming. and it is time for those about to graduate to look for jobs. Competition is tough, so job seekers must carefully consider their personal choices. Whatever we are wearing, our family and friends may accept us, but the workplace may not.
A high school newspaper editor said it is unfair for companies to discourage visible tattoos (紋身),nose rings, or certain dress styles. It is true you can’t judge a book by its cover, yet people do “cover” themselves in order to convey (傳遞)certain messages. What we wear, including tattoos and nose rings, is an expression of who we are. Just as people convey messages about themselves with their appearances, so do companies. Dress standards exist in the business world for a number of reasons, but the main concern is often about what customers accept.
Others may say how to dress is a matter of personal freedom, but for businesses it is more about whether to make or lose money. Most employers do care about the personal appearances of their employees (雇員),because those people represent the companies to their customers.
As a hiring manager I am paid to choose the people who would make the best impression on our customers. There are plenty of well-qualified candidates, so it is not wrong to reject someone who might disappoint my customers. Even though I am open-minded, I can’t expect all our customers are.
There is nobody to blame but yourself if your set of choices does not match that of your preferred employer. No company should have to change to satisfy a candidate simply because he or she is unwilling to respect its standards, as long as its standards are legal.
1.Which of the following is the newspaper editor’s opinion according to Paragraph 2?
A. People’s appearances carry messages about themselves.
B. Candidates with tattoos or nose rings should be fairly treated.
C. Customers’ choices influence dress standards in companies.
D. Strange dress styles should not be encouraged in the workplace.
2.What can be inferred from the text?
A. Candidates have to wear what companies prefer for an interview.
B. Hiring managers make the best impression on their candidates.
C. What to wear is not a matter of personal choice for companies.
D. Companies sometimes have to change to respect their candidates.
3.Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A. Hiring Managers Matter B. Personal Choices Matter
C. Employees Matter D. Appearances Matter
4.The author’s attitude towards strange dress styles in the workplace may best be described as _________.
A. enthusiastic B. positive
C. negative D. sympathetic

How to Care for Your Ears?
Ears not only let us hear, but they also play a role in maintaining our balance, which is vital to our ability to function in daily life. Yet, we ignore them. We can’t even see our ears, except in a mirror. We take for granted what they do for us day in and day out-until we notice something’s wrong, such as when an earache strikes or when we start having to ask people to repeat what they say. 1.
◆ Clean your ear with a washcloth-covered finger only.
Never put anything inside your ear canal, including cotton swabs (藥簽). 2.
◆ Leave earwax(耳垢) alone.
Wax is your ear’s way of eliminating(消除) anything foreign that gets into the ear canal. 3. If you find you have too much earwax, use a few drops of earwax remover(去除劑) in the canal. After a few minutes, wash the ear with warm water.
◆ Avoid noisy places.
Rock concerts and construction sites are just a few places that frequently have noise levels that can damage hearing. Any place where you have to shout to be heard should be avoided.
◆4.
Be careful not to play MP3 too loud, especially if using earphone.
◆Be careful with illness and medications.

“Our aim is to take our art to the world and make people understand what it is to move,” said David Belle, the founder of parkour ( also called free running-a kind of extreme sport).
Do you love running? It is a good exercise, yet many people find it boring. But what if making your morning jog a creative one? Like jumping from walls and over gaps, and ground rolls? Just like the James Bond in the movie Casino Royale? Bond jumps down from a roof to a windowsill and then runs several blocks over obstacles on the way. It is just because of Bond’s wonderful performances that the sport has become popular worldwide.
Yes, that’s parkour, an extreme street sport aimed at moving from one point to another as quickly as possible, getting over all the obstacles in the path using only the abilities of the human body. Parkour is considered an extreme sport. As its participants dash around a city, they may jump over fences, run up walls and even move from rooftop to rooftop.
Parkour can be just as exciting and charming as it sounds, but its participants see parkour much more than that.
Overcoming all the obstacles on the course and in life is part of the philosophy(理念) behind parkour. This is the same as life. You must determine your destination, go straight, jump over all the barriers as if in parkour and never fall back from them in your life, to reach the destination successfully. A parkour lover said, “I love parkour because its philosophy has become my life, my way to do everything.”
Another philosophy we’ve learnt from parkour is freedom. It can be done by anyone, at any time, anywhere in the world. It is a kind of expression of trust in yourself that you earn energy and confidence.
1.Parkour has become popular throughout the world because of .
A. the film, Casino Royale
B. its founder, David Belle
C. its risks and tricks
D. the varieties of participants
2.The underlined word “obstacles” in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to“ ”.
A. streets B. objects C. roofs D. barriers
3.Which of the following is true of parkour?
A. It challenges human abilities.
B. It is a good but boring sport.
C. It needs special training.
D. It is a team sport.
4.Which of the following is the philosophy of parkour?
A. Sports and extremes.
B. Excitement and popularity.
C. Dreams and success.
D. Determination and freedom.
