As soon as I saw the cat in our yard, I knew he was a stray (流浪兒). He looked —a wounded warrior with a badly scarred (有傷疤的) body.
I started putting out food for him each day, but he wouldn’t come near me if other people were . Winter came, and he still wouldn’t us. Then, one day, a car hit him so we took him to the
vet’s.
After a week, we were eager to bring him home to our family. But when we went to take the cat home, the vet told us we should put him to immediately because the cat was so fierce and meant that he would become tame (馴服的), let alone a pet.
But I have always had in love’s power to even the wildest beasts. I told the vet, “I want to take him home.” We him Paws.
Three days went by, and we only knew Paws was the bed because when we walked past it we heard deep growling.
I wanted to somehow let him know he was and loved. So I put on a hard hat and a pair of welding gloves. I under the bed toward Paws, with my face to the and only the top of my head facing him. I out to stroke (撫摩) him gently over and over again.
He growled and tried to and bite me. It was scary—but I knew he couldn’t me, so I just kept going. Slowly, he began to . Then I slid out from under the bed and left the room.
Several hours later, I noticed a cat on the bed. It was Paws—all on the pillows! I couldn’t believe it.
That dear cat became the of our household. Although Paws finally died of cancer, his legacy(遺贈(zèng))—my and firm belief in the power of love—lives on.

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain is one of the most famous American novels. Published in 1884, it was one of the first novels in the USA written in common, everyday language. For example, using non-standard English, Twain wrote, ‘I haven’t got any money,’ to mean ‘I do not have any money’. In this way, Twain made his characters very true to life.
The story is told by Huckleberry Finn, called Huck for short, who runs away to escape his abusive father. At first, Huck goes to a small island in the middle of the Mississippi River. There, he finds Jim, a black slave who has run away to escape slavery. The two of them stay on the island for a few weeks and become friends, but they must leave because Huck learns that people are looking for Jim. They decide to travel on a raft on the Mississippi River to reach the Ohio River, which will take them north to a state that does not allow slavery.
During their journey, Huck and Jim visit many places along the river and meet many different people. Unfortunately, most of the people they meet are not good. For instance, Huck and Jim meet a family, the Grangerfords, who have been fighting with another family, the Shepherdsons, for so many years that nobody remembers how the fight began. While Huck stays with the Grangerfords, the fighting starts again, and several members of both families are killed. Later, Huck and Jim meet the King and the Duke, two men who take control of their raft and make money by tricking people. During the confusion following one of these tricks, Huck and Jim escape with their raft.
Although the people Huck and Jim meet are bad, they are also funny. Mark Twain used humor to show readers the problems of American society in the 1800s. More importantly, despite all of the bad things that happen to Huck and Jim, the novel has a happy ending for both of them. Jim gets his freedom because his owner has died and set him free in her will, and Huck learns that his father has died, so he is also safe.
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is an adventurous and humorous story, and it teaches modern readers a lot about American society in the 1800s.

If you are looking for a creative solution to a piece of work or a school assignment, don’t lock yourself up in a quiet room.
A new study suggests that moderate background noise is a better spur(動(dòng)力) to creative thinking than the sound of silence,Time magazine reported.
A paper published in the Journal of Consumer Research says that the perfect working environment should buzz(嗡嗡作響)with a little noise.
Researchers found that test subjects were at their most creative when background noise was measured at 70 decibels, the level one might find in a busy coffee shop.
A nearly silent environment(50 decibels)was too quiet. Turning up the volume to 85 decibels (a jackhammer tearing up the pavement outside your building) was counterproductive-the noise became a distraction.
The researchers asked 65 students at the University of British Columbia,Canada,to perform various creative tasks while noises recorded at a roadside restaurant were played in the background.
In one experiment, scientists asked participants to brainstorm ideas for a new type of mattress(氣墊). Test subjects had the most successful discussions when the noise in the background was noticeable but not too loud.
While a quiet environment may make it easier to read a book. the authors of the study say that moderate background noise creates just enough of a distraction to force people to think more imaginatively, without breaking their focus so completely that they can’t think at all.
Should we all head for Starbucks to get creative? Not necessarily.
Researchers found limited work time surrounded by the low-level noise of a coffeehouse is what really stimulates creativity.
Equally, working in a care environment isn’t good for everybody. The productivity boost was most obvious among those who were naturally creative to begin with.
1.The recommended level of background noise is__________.
A. 50 decibels B. 65 decibels
C. 70 decibels D. 85 decibels
2.Why is moderate background noise good for creativity?
A. It relaxes people and stops them from getting bored.
B. It can help people to focus on a subject.
C. It can absorb sudden noises that cause distraction.
D. It pushes people to use their imagination but doesn’t reach a level that disturbs them.
3.According to the last three paragraphs,___________.
A. the low—level noise of a coffeehouse may be too loud for some people to work with
B. if a person is not a creative type, then background noise may not be of so much help to them
C. a person’s own creative ability is as important as the environment they are in
D. working in a coffeehouse is effective for most people

“Just take a deep breath.” “Don’t think about it.” “You’re more likely to die in a car wreck on the way to the airport than you are in a plane crash.” These are just some words given to people with a fear of flying. But as Tom Cruise, playing Lt. Daniel Kaffee in the movie A Few Good Men, said, “I get sick when I fly because I’m afraid of crashing into a large mountain. I don’t think Daniel will help.”
But there’s a new application that just may. Today, the VALK Foundation, a Dutch group that’s a partnership between KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and the University of Leiden, launches the app in the US. The VALK Foundation was one of the first centers for research and fear-of-flying treatment in the world and is the organizer of three world conferences on fear of flying.
The foundation said the app, called Flight App VALK, is the first scientifically-developed, web-based treatment for people who suffer from mild to moderate fear of flying.
“The fear of flying application we have created aims to transfer all of the knowledge we have developed through our program into a mobile application that will help ease travelers’ fears,” said Dr. Lucas van Gerwen, director of the VALK Foundation. Dr. van Gerwen is also a psychologist and professional pilot with more than 30 years experience.
The foundation said up to 30% of adults are fearful fliers. The Flight App is designed to help relax passengers before and during flights by educating users about flight safety and turbulence. It explains the sounds and sensations they can expect during departure, flight and landing. And, if a passenger’s flight stress reaches a panic level, they press a special panic button which provides audio and written information to help decrease stress levels. Most importantly, the Flight App can be used during the flight in the airplane mode. Once downloaded, the program does not require Internet connection in the air.

A. is a group focusing on psychology on the flight
B. was the first center to do research into fear of flying
C. organize the world conferences on fear of flying annually
D. focuses on researching and offering treatment on fear of flying
4.What does the last paragraph mainly tell us?
A. Many adults are suffering from fear of flying
