What will you be doing when you are 26 years old? Studying at university or working for a living? Take a look at what Albert Einstein was doing at the age of 26.
100 years ago, Einstein was working in Switzerland. His hobby was physics. Without much money or help, he wrote five papers(論文) for a physics magazine. Three of these greatly changed the study of physics and our understanding of space, time, light and matter(物質(zhì)). His most famous work is on the Theory of Relativity(相對(duì)論). Einstein was given the Nobel Prize for his discoveries. Although he also did many other things later, the years 1905 has been called Einstein’s “Year of Wonders”. It has been 100 years since then. Because of this, the UN has named 05 the World Year of Physics.
Today, over fifty years after Einstein’s death, a question is asked, “ Will there ever be another Einstein?” It may take a long time. After all, Einstein was born more than 200 years after Sir Isaac Newton, another great scientist. Besides, physics is a different field now, and education is different, too. Even if you can’t be the next great scientist, it is still helpful to remember some of the things that made Einstein great. He thought independently(獨(dú)立地) and read widely. He left with us a formula(公式) for life: If A is a success in life, then A=X+Y+Z. X is work, Y is play, and Z is keeping your mouth shut.
The year 1905 is known as Einstein’s “Year of Wonders” because .
A. Einstein was working in Switzerland in 1905 B. Einstein was 26 years old in 1905
C. Einstein made some very important discoveries in 1905 D. Einstein studied physics in 1905
Why hasn’t there been another scientist as great as Einstein?
A. Because the study of physics is not enough.
B. Because it is hard to make important discoveries as Einstein did.
C. Because people don’t work hard any more.
D. Because physics is getting more and more difficult.
The UN has named 05 the World Year of Physics because .
A. Einstein is 100 years old this year
B. Einstein has been dead for more than 50 years
C. there have been other great discoveries after Einstein’s death
D. it is the 100th year since Einstein’s “Year of Wonders”
What does Einstein’s formula for life mean?
A. Success means years of hard work.
B. Success means all study and no play.
C. Success means working hard, relaxing and not talking too much.
D. Success is a secret that nobody knows.

When did you last see a polar bear? On a trip to a zoo, perhaps? If you had attended a winter activity in New York a few years ago, you would have seen a whole polar bear club. These "Polar Bears" are people who meet frequently in the winter to swim in freezing cold water. That day, the air temperature was 3℃, and the water temperature was a bit higher. The members of the Polar Bear Club at Coney Island, New York are usually about the age of 60. Members must satisfy two requirements. First, they must get along well with everyone else in the group. This is very important because there are so many different kinds of people in the club. Polar Bears must also agree to swim outdoors at least twice a month from November through February.
Doctors do not agree about the medical effects of cold-water swimming. Some are worried about the dangers of a condition in which the body's temperature drops so low that finally the heart stops. Other doctors, however, point out that there is more danger of a heart attack during summer swimming because the difference between the air temperature and water temperature is much greater in summer than in winter.
The Polar Bears themselves are satisfied with the benefits (or advantages) of cold-water swimming. They say that their favorite form of exercise is very good for the circulatory system(循環(huán)系統(tǒng))because it forces the blood to move fast to keep the body warm. Cold-water swimmers usually turn bright red after a few minutes in the water. A person who turns blue probably has a very poor circulatory system and should not try cold-water swimming.
The main benefits (or advantages) of cold-water swimming are probably mental. The Polar Bears love to swim year-round; they find it fun and relaxing. As one 70-year-old woman says. "When I go into the water, I pour my troubles into the ocean and let them float away."
The members of the Polar Bear Club must meet the following requirements except that
__________.
A. they must reach the age of 60
B. they should be easy to make friends with
C. they must swim outdoors at least 8 times in the four cold months
D. they must agree to swim outdoors from November through February
Doctors __________.
A. encourage people to take part in cold-water swimming actively
B. point out the possible danger of blood illness during cold-water swimming
C. believe swimming is helpful both in winter and in summer
D. have different ideas about the medical effects of cold-water swimming
According to the passage, some doctors believe it is true that __________.
A. you are healthy if cold-water swimming turns your skin color blue
B. cold-water swimming causes more heart attacks in summer than in winter
C. cold-water swimming can make the body temperature dangerously high
D. Polar Bears are bears swimming in freezing water
The Polar Bears like to swim all the year round, for __________.
A. they can remain young B. it is an easy way to keep the body warm in winter
C. they find it enjoyable and interesting D. they might meet fewer troubles in life
The passage is mainly about __________.
A. a group of cold-water swimming lovers
B. the polar bears' life
C. doctors' ideas about cold-water swimming
D. the requirements of the Polar Bear Club

"Colour" and "color","favourite" and "favorite"... Have you ever wondered why Americans spell those words without a "u"? Is it because they are lazy?
Of course not. In fact, the difference in spelling was created by Noah Webster (1758-1843). He is a teacher who reformed English to make American identity stronger. Linguists (語(yǔ)言學(xué)家) celebrated his 250th birthday on October 16. After the Revolutionary War (1775~ 1783),Webster believed that Americans should have their own dictionary, rather than rely on British versions (版本). He dropped the British "u" in some words. And he changed "centre" into "center" for children to learn English by spelling words more like they sounded.
Webster wasn't shy about expressing his opinions. In defining (定義) preposterous (unreasonable),he wrote: "A republican government in the hands of females is preposterous."
Webster spent 28 years on the project before completing the 70,000-word dictionary in 1828 with his American-style spellings. He also added local words. His dictionary was widely used in schools. Linguists believed it helped a new nation achieve unity and cultural independence at a time when most were focused on political freedom.
"He was the shaper of our language and the shaper of American identity,"said Joshua Kendall, who is working on a biography (傳記) about Webster. "He at last bonded (聯(lián)合)us through our language."

A.voicing his opinion B.changing "centre" into "center"
C.a(chǎn)dding local words D.dropping "u" in all the British words
3.Which of the following word can best describe Noah Webster’s work?
A.Interesting. B.Meaningful. C.Unfinished. D.Boring.
4.Why did Noah Webster create these differences in his dictionary?
A.Because he wanted to make English simple and easy.
B.Because he wanted to show that the USA is stronger than the UK.
C.Because he wanted to achieve political freedom.
D.Because he wanted American English to have its own characteristics.
5.When did Noah Webster probably begin his project of the dictionary?
A.In 1758. B.In 1783. C.In 1800. D.In 1828.
