【題目】Cell Phones: Hang Up or Keep Talking

Millions of people are using cell phones today. In many places, it is actually considered unusual not to use one.1 They find that the phones are more than a means of communication – having mobile phone shows that they are cool and connected.

The explosions around the world in mobile phone use make some health professionals worried. Some doctors are concerned that in the future many people may suffer health problems from the use of mobile phones. Mobile phone companies are worried about the negative publicity(負面報道)of such ideas. 2

On the other hand, signs of change in the issues of the brain and head can be detected with modern scanning equipment. In one case, a traveling salesman had to retire at a young age because of serious memory loss. 3 This man used to talk on his mobile phone for about six hours a day, every day of his working week, for a couple of years.

4 The answer is radiation(輻射). High-tech machines can detect very small amounts of radiation from mobile phones. Mobile phone companies agree that there is some radiation, but they say the amount is too small to worry about.

As the discussion about the safety continues, it appears that it’s best to use mobile phones less often.

5 Use your mobile phone only when you really need it. In the future, mobile phones may have a warning label that says they are bad for your health. So for now, it’s wise not to use your mobile phone too often.

A. They say that there is no proof that mobile phones are bad for your health.

【題目】Thanksgiving Day

Thanksgiving Day is always celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November. It is the most traditional(傳統(tǒng)的)of American holidays. The first Thanksgiving was held in Massachusetts in 1621. After a year of hard work, the Pilgrim colonists wanted to give thanks to God for their first harvest. They invited their Indian friends to join them in a big feast. Today the holiday is still celebrated as a day for giving thanks. It is a day of family get-together and it is common to invite friends to share the meal. In some large cities, there are carnival parades (花車游行) for children. In other cities, there are important football games that are played on Thanksgiving Day.

In my family, we always go to my grandmother’s house on Thanksgiving Day. All my aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews, and nieces gather for a family homecoming. We always invite some friends to join us. Everyone is glad to see everyone else and there is a very busy talk about everything we know. The women soon disappear into the kitchen to help my grandmother prepare the dinner. The men, meanwhile, settle down to watch a football game on television or to discuss business or polities. If the weather is fine enough, some of the men go outside to play ball with the children. At about four o'clock we all sit down to dinner. My grandfather gives thanks for all that we have received from God and then he starts to cut the turkey. We always have the traditional dinner of stuffed turkey, cranberry sauce, apple cider, sweet potatoes, chestnuts, and pumpkin pie. After dinner, no one can move and we all sit around and talk, play word games, or tell jokes until it is time to go home. 【題目】Michelle was a student at University of California, Los Angeles. She is here to tell us how she feels about the city.

What were the best things about Los Angeles?

One of my favorite things about Los Angeles is the weather. I hate the cold and it never really gets that cold there. Plus, most of the time it’s usually sunny, which is good because I love going to the beach during the summer. There’s so much to do at the beach, but my favorite thing in L.A. was having a picnic on the sand with my friends.

What were the worst things about being there?

I disliked having to drive everywhere to get around because the city is so spread out. Los Angeles has a lot of traffic and sometimes it takes a long time to get somewhere close by just because the streets are so crowded. Also, a lot of people complain about the pollution.

Did you have any problems there?

Just the normal problems of living in any city, like watching out for pickpockets (扒手). Some people think Los Angeles has a lot of crime, but I think it’s as safe as any other city. Also, many people think driving is difficult because there is a lot of traffic and road rage (路怒癥), but it just takes a little practice and a lot of patience.

What are the people like in Los Angeles?

There are all types of people in Los Angeles since the city is pretty diverse. For the most part, though, most of the people are friendly, calm and relaxed. Some people say that everyone in Los Angeles is beautiful, but I think that’s just a stereotype (模式化的印象).

Would you go back to Los Angeles?

Certainly. Los Angeles is one of my favorite cities in the world. I love the fact that it has all the nightlife and shopping of a big city, but also has access to beaches, parks, mountains and other places you can’t usually find in large cities. Between the weather and the beaches and all the fun things to do, it’s a great place to be.

1We can learn from the text that Michelle _____.

A. hates the heavy traffic in Los Angeles

B. dislikes the cold weather in Los Angeles

C. thinks Los Angeles is small and crowded

D. enjoys driving everywhere in Los Angeles

2What’s Michelle’s impression of the people in Los Angeles?

A. They get angry easily. B. All sorts of people live there.

C. They are patient and amusing. D. Everyone is kind and beautiful.

3How does Michelle find Los Angeles?

A. Safe but noisy. B. Relaxing but busy.

C. Polluted and dangerous. D. Diverse and interesting.

E-books are a relatively recent invention. They are popular for a great many of reasons. An e-reader takes up much less rooms in a suitcase: perfect for people who had to take several books on holiday. Besides, lots of people don’t reread books; an e-reader mean they don’t end up with a house filling with books they’ll never look at again. People say they’re more environmentally friendly: no trees cut down for paper, or no ink is needed. However successfully these devices are, nothing can beat an appeal of a genuine book for me. After all, if I’m short in cash, I can always go to the library and borrow books for free!
