故填who/that。

故填be considered。

故填a。

consist of“由…… 故填of

故填them

故填while/and。

From a young age, I would climb up and down for fun. My first introduction to gymnastics was through my older sister Arielle, who used to be a gymnast. She taught me how to do my first cartwheel(側(cè)手翻). By the end of the week, I was teaching myself one-armed cartwheels and my sister said to my mom, “You need to put this kid in gymnastics.”

At about age 9, I realized that I wanted to pursue the Olympic path. I was used to the public eye, but the Olympic stage was different. The Games teach you to act in a certain way and to be disciplined(守紀律的). They teach you to be a mature young lady, and you grow up fast.

When I started this journey, I never knew what it actually took to get to the Olympics. I thought it was: Training. I had to give up a normal kind of life for gymnastics, but I didn’t mind. I moved from Virginia Beach to Iowa to get a different coach. I sacrificed my privacy. Gymnastics was what I was going to eat, breathe and sleep. It takes a lot to be an Olympic athlete. You may have a talent, but the people who work harder than you will surpass(超過) you.

Throughout my career, a lot of people have doubted me. When someone tells you that you can’t do it, especially when there are many people, you start to believe it. It took me years to figure out how great I was at gymnastics. Fear held me back when I hurt my leg in 2011, but I told myself that I had a talent and that I was going to use it. I went to the world championships and got a team gold.

I won three gold medals at the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games and helped Team USA win gold at the 2011 and 2015 world championships. My mom used to say, “Inspire a generation.” It’s one thing when you say it, but I never thought that I would be a pioneer and that people would draw inspiration from my story.

1Why did the author’s sister suggest putting her in gymnastics?

A. She was talented in gymnastics.

B. She needed to decide her future career.

C. She was too noisy to stay at home.

D. She had fallen in love with gymnastics.

2We can learn from Paragraph 3 that the author ________.

A. left school at an early age

B. devoted great efforts to training

D. dreamed of being famous one day

3What did the author learn from others’ doubt?

A. Failures were unavoidable.

B. She had to improve her skills.

When it comes to climate change, language does count. In March, the Guardian changed1(it) wording – using “global heating” instead of “global warming” , after scientists found that Earth’s temperature is set 2(rise) from between 2.5C and 4.5C. And on May 1, the UK parliament declared a “climate emergency”, 3(become)the first parliament to do so.

If with “global warming”, we’re still inside our comfort zone of handling the situation, entering the state of “global heating” is like heading to a point4the delicate balance of nature is disturbed so much that there is no turning back. Everything will be changing: Coral will die, polar bears will lose their habitats completely, and extreme5 (weather) like droughts and heavy storms will happen at a higher6 (frequent). There is no denying that we’re entering a climate emergency.

Decades ago when the science on the climate issue was first increasing, the impacts could be seen as an issue for future generations,” but now it’s 7(definite) our issue, 8shift we all are living together.

However, getting these messages 9 is far from enough. It depends on each to find a solution – if there are any solutions left to find. The UK’s Labor leader Jeremy urged that “we10( take) rapid and dramatic action now”.

Indeed, language matters. But action matters even more.

Have you ever wished you could see in the dark as well as an animal? In action movies, we often see characters wearing special glasses that reveal(顯示)things that can't be seen in darkness. Everything looks green, but we can see the shapes and outlines clearly. As a matter of fact, this is somewhat similar to the way animals' night vision (視力) works.

You may have noticed eyeshine in pictures of animals, or seen it for yourself when light hits an animal's eyes. Dogs, cats, and many other animals have tissue (組織) called the tapetum lucidum(光神經(jīng)纖維層) in each eye. The purpose of this tissue is reflect (反射) light deeper into the eye. For many animals, it leads to their excellent night vision, and it helps them hunt.

Different types of animals have different colors of eyeshine. The light reflecting back from the eyes of dogs and cat is likely to be yellow. Rats and birds usually have eyes that shine red. Other animals’ eyes may reflect white, yellow, green, or pink light. In each case, the color is related to the type of cells that make up the tapetum lucidum, as well as the chemicals inside the cells.

Eyeshine has the function of improving animals' night vision, but humans have found other uses for it. For example, when people are searching for certain types of animals, their eyeshine may be helpful in recognizing or discovering them. Also, eyeshine has inspired humans to invent substance (物質(zhì)) that reflect light at night. Strips containing this substance are used to warn us of safety risks such as raised parts of roads. Even though humans cannot see so well at night, we have still found ways to benefit from this amazing animal feature.

1How does the tapetum lucidum help animals' night vision?

A. It sends out light in the dark. B. It makes everything appear green.

C. It reflects light back into the eyes. D. It enables them to see colors at night.

2How does the author mainly develop Paragraph 3?

A. By providing reasons. B. By giving examples.

C. By following space order. D. By doing experiments.

3What can we learn about scientists' research on eyeshine?

A. They've put it to practical uses.

B. They're using it to protect some animals.

C. They're trying to include more animal types.

D. They've invented special glasses based on it.

4What is the text mainly about?

A. How humans' night vision works. B. Different colors of animals' eyes.

C. How animals see in the dark. D. Eyeshine and its benefits.
