10.My daughter recently asked me what a travel agency does. There is one located on our street and it has just been completely rebuilt.I told her that they helped people book their trips and vacations."Why haven't we ever been there?"she wanted to know."Because we do everything ourselves online these days"I explained."But why do it yourself if other people want to do it for you?"she wondered out loud.
The answer is that the travel agency makes a little bit of money on each ticket you book through them.If you book your ticket yourself online, you save that money.Saving money sounds great except that when you think about it you typically spend three evenings comparing prices to end up saving 30ona300 trip. All those 30 discounts add up of course so i guess we should be happy with that.
Consider books for a moment.Buying your book at Amazon saves you maybe 30% to 40% on each book.Add to that the convenience of shopping from home and getting the package delivered to your home address. So far so good.Unfortunately, that does mean you spend too much time browsing Amazon.com while you could do something fun instead.Like maybe reading an actual book?
Then the package arrives and you aren't home and end up having to pick it up at the local post-office.All in all I wonder how much time I end up investing in the whole process.Time sounds free, but to most of us,it is more valuable than money.
The Internet Economy promised to get rid of the middle-men and we loved it.Somehow,I'm starting to get the feeling that we ourselves ended up doing the work of that middle-men we were so eager to get rid of.
In any project you can always pick two of these:fast, cheap or good.We seem to have focused a lot on‘cheap'and‘good'but the extra time we need to invest to also keep it‘fast'comes out of our own pockets.
You can always make more money but you can never make more time.

15.Since World WarⅡthe French have been surprised and annoyed by the power of American culture and its effect on France and the world.Their only consolation (安慰) has been the belief that French culture is superior to anything that Walt Disney or Hollywood can offer.
What France's cultural elites (精英) have rarely done,however,is examine how both serious and pop culture actually work in the United States.Rather,in the view of Frédéric Martel,a Frenchman and author of a recently released book on the topic,they have preferred to hide behind"a certain ideological anti-Americanism".Now he has set out to change this.In Culture in America,a 622-page book with lots of information,he challenges the conventional view that French culture financed and organized by the government is entirely good and that American culture shaped by market forces is necessarily bad.
"My first idea was to compare France and the United States,but when I arrived in America,I realized things were much more complicated.The United States is a continent,and you can't compare a continent with a small country or a decentralized country with one that is highly centralized"Martel recalled.
As a result,this book deals only with creativity and arts financing in the United States.But perhaps surprisingly,given the mixture of fear and disdain (鄙視) that American culture stirs among many French intellectuals,his approach is not polemical (爭論的).He neither defends nor attacks the United States; he simply describes the American way of culture.
"This idea is to see how a‘counter-model'works,"he explained."If the aim is to fight American culture‘imperialism',we need to know it from the inside.If we want to modernize our own system,which needs new resources,it is useful to see how things can function without huge public investment."
The news media's response to Culture in America suggests there is room for debate.One weekly,L'Express,said the book offered food for thought.Another,Le Nouvel Observateur,compared it favorably to a recent overview on Democracy in America by Tocqueville,noting that Mr.Martel provides facts rather than impressions.Reviewing the book in Le Monde,critics also said its strength lay in its emphasis on investigation over opinion.And another article in Le Monde took the American cultural statistics collected by Mr.Martel and compared them with similar figures for France.Its unexpected conclusion was that the cultural infrastructures in the two countries were roughly similar.

A.angry
B.proud
C.disappointed
D.surprised
68.Mr.Martel gave up his idea of comparing France and the United States mainly because

B.French people hold an anti-Americanism attitude
C.American culture is much more complicated
D.American cultural activities don't have public investment
69.According to the passage,the book Culture in AmericaB.
A.attacks the US but defends France

19.One evening I went out and left my 17-year-old son in charge of his 8-year-old brother and 4-year-old sister.On this occasion,the chore (煩人的事) was made less troublesome by the presence of his girlfriend.I left with complete confidence that the older children would do a wonderful job of babysitting the younger children and the younger children would do a wonderful job of accompanying the older ones.Later,I discovered that complete confidence was the last thing I should have left home with.
I had decided to return home earlier than planned so that my son and his girlfriend could go out.I called home with this happy news.But instead of hearing his cheerful,thankful voice on the other end of the line,all I heard was the sound of a telephone ringing.
It was,I should point out,after 10p.m.,when the two younger children should have been in bed,and when the two older children should have been answering the phone."I'll give him a lesson,"I said.I decided they must be outside.Why they might be outside at 10:30on a wintry night I had no idea,but it was the only explanation I could come up with.
Finally,in desperation,I called his girlfriend's house.After what seemed like countless rings,his girlfriend answered."Yes,"she said brightly,"He's right here."
He came on the phone.I was not my usual calm,rational self.After all,one of the rules of survival (生存) for modern parents is that you can't trust modern teenagers."Where are the children?"I said.He said they were with him.They had done nothing wrong.My son had taken the younger children over to his girlfriend's house just for ice cream and cake.This was too wholesome (有益的) to be believed.Well,it turns out that I shouldn't have believed it. It was only part of the truth.
The following Saturday evening we were at my parents'home,celebrating my birthday.My oldest son gave me the children's gifts.Mounted and framed (給…裝框) were a series of lovely color photographs of my children,dressed in their best clothes,and wearing their most wonderful expressions.They are pictures to treasure a lifetime,all taken by the father of my son's girlfriend.
That was the most precious gift of all.
