It is normal for parents to question their children's hairstyle or the clothes they wear. But today teenagers and their parents argue over something else: money.
Children are spending lots of it. Parents used to say to their children, "You're wearing that?" Now they say, "You paid how much for that?"
Children in the US today spend five times more money than their parents did when they were young.
So what are all these children buying? The list is long: ipods trainers(訓(xùn)練鞋), cellphones and jeans are typical items that children "have to" buy. And they will do anything to get them. They ask their parents over and over until they buy them.
But parents also need to take the blame for spending so much money. They want their children to have the best stuff. They end up competing with other parents over what their children have.
So no wonder children find it hard to learn the importance of saving money rather than spending it all the time.
And it's hard to save when companies use advertising and clever slogans to encourage young people to buy their products. They even encourage children to keep asking their parents for something until they get it.
Today, you don't even need to have money in order to buy something. Banks give out credit cards and loans all the time so people are saving less and less. We are used to there being lots of money around. And if you don't have much you can always borrow some.
But this hasn't always been the case. When our grandparents were young there was very little money and everyone had to save hard for things they bought. They only bought things they needed, not things they just wanted.
The older generation made the wise expression, "Money doesn’t grow on trees." This is as true now as it was 50 years ago. They give money a great deal of value. And we all have a lot to learn from them.

Scientists have created a “ human-like robot” that can dance and do the housework.
“ Mahru” has been developed to imitate humans and can move its lips, eyebrows and pupils(瞳孔). The machine can also move its upper and lower body freely and automatically stop itself when walking.
In addition, it has been programmed to give out two kinds of pleasant smells to match its emotions.
The 1.5 tall robot was produced by researchers at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) and is the first South Korean- developed machine of its kind.
“‘Mahru’ will open the way for the commercial use of humanoid robots doing housework,” You Bum-Jae, leader of the development research team ,said. “‘Mahru’ can dance while walking on its legs and is able to work in place of a human.”
Through an advanced motion capture (捕獲) system, “Mahru” can follow a variety of human movements and move its hands freely enough to deal with any obstacles that may get in its way when walking.
State-funded KIST showed the robot during a presentation at its head office in Seoul.
People here were treated to an entertaining demonstration which saw the robot show off the full range of its skills, most notably s series of dance moves.
The research team added that they had designed another “ Mahru”, this time with sensors(傳感器) allowing it to distinguish(分辨) between faces and objects.
The showing of “ Mahru” came a week after researcher in Japan said they had created the “most human-like” robot in the world. A team at robotics department of Osaka University in Japan claimed that “ robogirl”, Repliee R-1, “ looks, moves and interacts (相互作用) like a human, and has silicone(硅膠) skin that feels almost human to the touch.”
【小題1】 “Mahru” made by KIST can do the following things EXCEPT____________
A.dance with other human –like robots | B.move its body freely |
C.stop automatically when walking | D.express certain feelings through smells |
A.help robots with doing housework | B.show its scientific power |
C.make Mahru offer more fun | D.explore Mahru’s commercial use |
A.go around it | B.turn back quickly |
C.deal with it using its hands | D.a(chǎn)sk humans for help |
A.is another Mahru | B.was made by KIST |
C.has skin feeling similar to humans’ | D.looks like a boy |
A.news report | B.research report | C.healthy report | D.entertainment report |

A new power plant in Nakoso, Japan, might someday change everything for coal plants.Since the new power plant fired up in September, the designer, Mistubishi, is expecting to prove it's possible to burn coal without polluting. This technology is known as integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC).Proving IGCC works should give Mitsubishi's US partner, NRG Energy, the jump other hurdles to building new clean plants.
The project promised to solve the problem of the ages for power plants: how to produce cheap, clean, reliable electricity. No existing technology can do all three perfectly.
The problem is IGCC isn't there yet.It costs about 20 percent more than traditional plants. And even though it's easier to collect the resulting carbon dioxide from an IGCC plant than a traditional plant, there's no proven way to get rid of the greenhouse gas.One plan is to drill a shaft(通道) to pump the carbon dioxide underground, into saltwater formations. But there's no guarantee it will remain underground forever.
NRG administrators think solving the IGCC riddles is worth the trouble because they expect the U.S.will soon limit the amount of carbon dioxide that power generators may give out .
"With the additional cost of IGCC, to just voluntarily build something that's 20 percent more expensive, that’s commercial suicide," NRG chief administrator, David Crane said.
NRG administrators expect the cost to decline after six or seven plants are built. But other industry experts think it will take about a dozen plants for the price to be competitive with traditional coal plants.
Takaya Watanabe, a vice general manager of Mitsubishi, admits that the cost challenges are difficult.“It’s good for a company to say we want to be green, but unless someone is willing to pay, it's a dream. It won't keep our family eating rice," he said.
1.What is expected of the new technology?
A.To make electricity without polluting the air.
B.To produce energy without burning coal.
C.To keep the use of electricity cheaper.
D.To pump carbon dioxide more easily .
2.What's the biggest problem the companies are faced with?
A.How to pump greenhouse gases.
B.How to deal with the high cost.
C.How to get along with other partners.
D.How to improve the new technology.
3.What can be inferred from the passage?
A.New technologies are unacceptable to people.
B.It's unlikely to build more new power plants.
C.The companies are run on a tight budget.
D.Going green is easier said than done.
