After years of research and testing, the hybrid car was developed and put on the market. It' s an interesting and exciting new improvement in today' s world as we look for better ways to protect the quality of the air we breathe and conserve our natural resources.
The quality of our air is affected by many different things. But one of the largest sources of air pollution is the burning of fossil fuels such as coal and gasoline which is used to power a car' s engine. The EPA has set national standards to help control the level of harmful pollutants sent off into the air, and the automobile industry has acted by producing a hybrid car that uses less gas and therefore causes less pollution.
A hybrid car is a combination of a regular car that runs on gasoline and an electric car that is battery powered. Some people tend to think that since the hybrid car is partially electric, you have to plug it in to charge it. But that's not how it works. The 144-volt battery pack is actually recharged through the energy that is produced when the car's brakes are used. This is referred to as “regenerative braking”, because it generates electricity.
Although the hybrid car still runs on gasoline most of the time, this helps it use less gas than a regular car. When the driver stops at a traffic light, the engine automatically shuts off to save fuel. Then, as soon as the driver puts the car in gear and touches the gas pedal, the engine starts back up.
Have you ever ridden in a car with someone who ran out of gas? That probably wouldn't happen if you were riding in a hybrid car. It flashes a warning on its computer screen that says, “I am low on gas”. When it completely runs out, the warning reads, “YOU ARE NOW OUT OF GAS!” Then the electric power supply kicks in to let the driver travel a few more miles to a gas station.
(1)Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A.The hybrid car will be put on the market.
B.Hybrid cars run faster than regular cars.
C.When the hybrid car stops at a traffic light, the driver will get a warning.
D.The burning of fossil fuels is one of the largest sources of air pollution.
(2)According to the passage, the word “hybrid” refers to ________.
A.a high-tech discovery
B.energy saving
C.a new invention
D.a combination of two things
(3)“Regenerative breaking” is an important process of the hybrid car because ________.
A.it allows the car to come to a quick stop
B.it gives the driver a smoother ride
C.it produces energy to charge the battery
D.it can control the speed of the car
(4)Which of the following is right about the EPA?
A.They designed hybrid cars.
B.They outlawed (宣布……為不合法) the burning of fossil fuels.
C.They set important guidelines that help control pollution.
D.Their main purpose is to protect endangered plants and animals.
(5)Which of the following is the reason for developing hybrid cars?
A.They use less gas than regular cars.
B.They' re safer to drive than most cars.
C.They're more modern than other cars.
D.They cost less than regular cars.

But one of the largest sources of air pollution is the burning of fossil fuels such as coal and gasoline which is used to power a car' s engine.
根據(jù)文章第三段第一句話“A hybrid car is a combination of a regular car that runs on gasoline and an electric car that is battery powered.”
根據(jù)文章第三段最后部分“The 144-volt battery pack is actually recharged(充電) through the energy that is produced when the car's brakes are used. This is referred to as “regenerative braking”, because it generates electricity.”
根據(jù)文章第二段第三句“The EPA has set national standards to help control the level of harmful pollutants sent off into the air,”可知,美國環(huán)保署已經(jīng)制定了國家標準,以幫助控制有害污染物排放到空氣中的水平,所以答案是C.。
根據(jù)文章第四段第一句“Although the hybrid car still runs on gasoline most of the time, this helps it use less gas than a regular car.”

More than loo genes are related with increased risk of developing schizophrenia(精神分裂癥),bipolar disorder (躁郁癥)and alcoholism(酗酒),confirms a large study published in the recent issue of the British scientific journal Nature.
The world's largest study into the genetic basis of mental illnesses was led by researchers from British universities, including University College London (UCL),Cardiff University and King's College London (KCL).
Researchers believe that they are now much closer than before to understanding the complex biological causes, which make some people being at high risk of developing mental illnesses. They also believe that these findings could lead to new treatments.
The researchers analyzed the DNA of about 37,000 patients with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder or alcoholism, and compared the smallest genetic changes to those found in about 113,000 healthy people. They then identified about 128 independent genetic variants(變體)at 108 locations on the human chromosomes(染色體)that contribute significantly to developing schizophrenia—83 of these sites have never before been linked to the illness, according to scientists.
For example, people with the variant of the GRM3 gene, thought to be important in brain signaling, are around 2 to 3 times more likely to develop schizophrenia or alcohol dependence. The variant, which is found in approximately one in every 200 people,is also associated with a three times risk of developing bipolar disorder.
"We could be looking at the next big drug target for treating mental illness,"Professor David Curtis from UCL, co-author of the paper, said."The work opens up new ways to prevent and treat mental illnesses by revealing the mechanisms involved in their development."
(1)What can we learn from Paragraph 3?
A.Researchers are disappointed at curing biological causes.
B.Researchers are worried about the complex biological causes.
C.Researchers have found the method of curing biological causes.
D.Researchers are confident for figuring out the complex biological causes.
(2)According to Paragraph 4,the researchers found.
A.there are 37,000 patients with mental illnesses in the world
B.most of the sites have never before been linked to mental illnesses
C.there is little difference between the patients and the healthy people
D.the cause of mental illnesses has nothing to do with the genetic changes
(3)We can learn from Paragraph 5.
A.the variant of the GRM3 gene is important
B.the number of people with the variant of the GRM3 gene is large
C.the number of people with the variant of the GRM3 gene is small
D.people with the variant of the GRM3 gene aren't likely to suffer schizophrenia
(4)What's the main topic discussed in the text?
A.The importance of gene variants.
B.The research of gene variants.
C.The cause of mental illnesses.
D.Gene variants linked to mental illnesses.

The problem of “white pollution” was caused by using plastic is becoming increasingly serious, on which plastic shopping bags play an important role. In China, about three billions plastic shopping bags are consumed every day, that results in a great waste of resources and heavy environmental pollution. Lucky, the government has put a nationwide ban on the use of free plastic bags, demand that no stores or supermarkets should provide customers with free plastic bags. The rule will undoubtedly reduce use of plastic bags or promote the awareness of environmental protection. It was highly suggested that everyone turns to cloth bags and shopping baskets.
