【題目】Two students started quarreling at school. One student shouted dirty words at the other, and a fight began. What can be done to stop fights like this at school? In some schools, the disputants sit down with peer mediators(同齡調(diào)解者). Peer mediators are students with special training in this kind of problems.

Peer mediators help the disputants to talk in a friendly way. Here are some of the ways they use:

1) Put what you think clearly but don’t say anything to hurt the other. Begin with “I feel…” instead of “You always…”

2) Listen carefully to what the other person is saying. Don’t stop the other person’s words.

3) Keep looking at the other person’s eyes when he or she talks.

4) Try to see the other person’s side of the problem.

5) Never put anyone down. Saying things like “You are foolish” makes the talk difficult.

6) Try to find a result that makes both people happy.

Peer mediators never decide the result or the winner. They don’t decide who is right and who is wrong. Instead, they help the two students to find their own “win-win” result.

The underlined word “disputants” refers to the students ________.

A. who make peace B. who give in

C. who are lazy D. who quarrel

【題目】In American high schools, there is a tradition for each year's graduating class( called the seniors) to play a joke on the schoolthe Senior Prank(畢業(yè)惡作劇).

This usually happens at the end of the school year just before the seniors graduate from the school. It is an unofficial tradition. Al-though the schools don't encourage it, each year the seniors try to make their pranks the most original so that their class will be remembered in the years to come. The joke is supposed to be light-hearted(無傷大雅的)and must not do major damage to the school property .

The best prank at my high school was done several years ago. A flower called the golden poppy(金罌粟花)is the state flower of California ; the state law states that no one can cut them down once they are planted.

The seniors at my school took advantage of the law. They planted golden poppies all over the football field one night, spelling out their graduation year with the flowers ! Since the school couldn't break the law to cut down the poppies, they had to wait until the flowers died.

The greatest prank that I've ever heard was done by one of my history teachers when he was in high school. He and some of his close friends went fishing in hopes of catching big fish for their prank. They were lucky and caught a three-foot shark.

My teacher and his friends took the shark to the school at night and dumped it into the swimming pool. The next morning when students went swimming, they found a dead shark in their pool. The chlorine()in the water had killed the shark ! My history teacher always regretted that his school had put so much chlorine in the pool, or it would have been more fun if the shark was still alive the next day.

The schools won't take it seriously if the pranks don't cause too much damage. But, sometimes the school will punish the seniors for going too far with their prank. My teacher's “Shark Prank “is an example of a prank gone too far. The school had to drain (排水)the pool and have it cleaned before filling it up again, which had cost the school several thousand dollars.

【題目】According to body language expert Robert Phipps, the way people sleep at night actually determines a lot about the type of personality they have. Phipps has identified four sleeping positions that affect personality.

Phipps found that worriers, those who stress the most, tend to sleep in the fetal(胎兒的) position. He found that this is the most common bedtime position, with nearly 58 percent of people sleeping on their side with knees up and head down. The more we curl up(蜷曲), the more comfort we are seeking, according to Phipps.

The second most common position is the log. Sleeping with a straight body, with arms at each side, as if they are standing guard at Buckingham Palace, indicates stubbornness, and these people (the 28 percent who sleep this way) often wake up stiffer than when they went to sleep.

"The longer you sleep like this, the more rigid your thinking is and you can become inflexible, which means you make things harder for yourself," according to Phipps.

Yearner(向往型) sleepers are next on the list. About 25 percent of people sleep in this style — on their side with arms stretched out in front, looking as if they are either chasing a dream or perhaps being chased themselves. Yearners are typically their own worst critics, always expecting the best results, explained Phipps. These people often wake up refreshed and eager to face the challenges of the day ahead.

Perhaps the most peculiar(奇怪的) of sleep styles is the freefaller position. This sleep style makes up 17 percent of the population. They sleep face down with arms stretched out. These people, according to Phipps, feel like they have little control over their life. Not only is this the strangest of sleep styles, but also the least comfortable, and people may wake up feeling tired and have no energy.

In conclusion, Phipps has only one more thing to add: "A good night’s sleep sets you up for the following day and our sleeping positions can determine how we feel when we wake."

The underlined word "rigid" is closest in meaning to " ".

A. stubborn B. flexible C. comfortable D. strange

【題目】They tell us when to get up or when we’re running late for work and whether we are in danger of missing our favourite TV programme. But while our daily routines rely on clocks that tell us the time, science is discovering that our well-being is influenced by a very different kind of timepiece. Circadian rhythms---the human body’s own internal clock---have a powerful influence on our health and behaviour. They are programmed from birth and control functions ranging from temperature and blood pressure to sleep patterns.

In recent years researchers have also discovered that this built-in mechanism can influence everything from the way we react to medicines to how well we learn music.

The latest example, from experts at Harvard University in the US, shows that the human body clock can even dictate whether or not we are likely to tell the truth. Researchers found it was easier for people to fib(撒小謊) in the afternoon because, as they were tired, the self control that would normally prevent them from lying started to break down. Tiredness made it harder to resist the temptation to tell lies---especially if it meant they got a financial reward at the end.

The body clock has a great effect on us all,” says Professor Jim Horne from the Sleep Research Centre at Loughborough University. “Most people tend to feel good around late morning and then decline in the early afternoon. But the time most of us will feel our sharpest is between 6pm and 8pm. That’s because sleepiness tends to build up throughout the day. By early evening our body clock kicks in to wake us up. One reason may be to ensure we get home safely. When our ancestors were coming home after hunting all day their internal clocks kicked in to get them home in one piece.”

So what effects do circadian rhythms have and what’s the best time of day to take advantage of them?

The underlined word They in the first paragraph refers to .

A. our clocksB. scientists and experts

C. our daily routinesD. circadian rhythms
