Years of expecting this time has finally arrived; there were times when I thought we would never get here. We are having three graduations in one family. My daughter is graduating from 4-year College in nursing, and my son is graduating from a high school, and I also just graduated last week. The dream was planted many years ago. I had always dreamt of going back to school, but it was too worrying and too hard.

Three years ago, I lost one of my dear friends. She died suddenly someday. All those thoughts of “someday” seemed to take on different meanings. So, I decided to take a course, then I took two. I finally took 4 courses. When I was in the second week of school, my family was in a terrible car accident. My husband, my two children and I were on our way to visit my another daughter at work in another city for her twenty-third birthday, and we were hit by a truck a half mile from our house. My husband was seriously hurt, and I was told by doctors many times it was a miracle(奇跡) that he had survived a serious head injury.

The three of us were barely passing after that time period. I had a broken arm and could not write. However, none of us had cold feet. As one of the top ten students in the college, my daughter graduated from college and got her Bachelor’s Degree. My son was admitted to a famous university after his graduation. I am proud of them.

As my password, I called myself “mountain climber.” The journey was difficult and every hill seemed higher to climb. Last week, the highlight of my life was walking across that platform and getting my degree six months before I turn fifty. I am proud of myself, too.

War or natural disasters often destroy or cause major damage to sanitary systems. The destruction of waste treatment systems can increase the risk of disease and even death among survivors.

Some people dig holes in the ground that serve as individual toilets. However, micro-organisms from human wastes can reach water supplies and cause cholera or other diseases.

A United Nations team is now developing a toilet for disaster areas. The experimental project is called eSOS—for the Emergency Sanitation Operation System. The system is lightweight and operates on sunlight power.

Scientists are working on the toilet at the UN’s Institute for Water Education in the Netherlands. Damir Brdjanovic is heading the project. He says his team hopes to bring disaster assistance into the 21st century.

The eSOS system has several ‘smart’ features, such as a self-contained energy supply unit. Another is a global positioning system sensor, very much like the GPS equipment in some vehicles. There is also equipment that measures waste buildup. All of the information from the toilet system can be shared with an emergency organization center. Officials at the center can then identify the needs of an affected disaster area. The eSOS system can also recycle liquid wastes into water that can be used for farming. This involves treating the urine(尿液)with the help of a membrane bioreactor system(膜生物反應(yīng)器系統(tǒng)).

The smart toilet is being tested. Damir Brdjanovic and his team plan to test the toilet at a refugee camp in the Philippines later this year. The developers hope this disaster relief will save the lives of many refugees.

1.What’s the best title of the passage?

A. Toilet for Our Future Life

B. Machine to Recycle Human Wastese

C. New Technology to Reduce the Risk of Disease

D. SOS—the Emergency Sanitation Operation System

2.Which of the following is NOT true about eSOS?

A. It weighs light.

B. It serves as individual toilet for disaster survivors.

C. It doesn’t need any power.

D. It is equipped with a global positioning system sensor.

3.What can we infer from this passage?

A. eSOS can prevent any risk of disease.

B. eSOS will be put into use in the near future.

C. Damir Brdjanovic holds a negative attitude to eSOS.

D. The eSOS system can recycle liquid wastes into drinkable water.

科目:高中英語 來源:2016屆福建高三普通高中畢業(yè)班4月質(zhì)量檢查英語試卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解

If you need to spend time on the road,it’s important to find ways to keep safe on your feet. Don’t suppose it's your right of way. Yes, you might be crossing at the right place, at the right time, within the crosswalk area, but you are still exposed to danger. It could be a distracted driver, or a cyclist with a loose sense of traffic rules, so you could still get hurt. You can be in the right legally, but that won’t be much help when you're in the hospital.

Follow pedestrian signals. Just as drivers aren’t supposed to speed up to beat a light when crossing through an intersection, pedestrians need to take the same care when obeying their own signals. If the hand is flashing and the countdown is into single digits (數(shù)字),stay where you are. Trying to outrun the flashing hand is unsafe, especially as cars try to clear the intersection before the light turns red.

Give drivers enough time to stop when crossing. Don’t suppose that drivers will jam on their brakes when you hit the crosswalk signals. Some provinces, such as Alberta, issue (發(fā)出)a ticket if you don’t give drivers enough time to brake.

Cross quickly. Once you’ve followed all of the other rules, and it is safe to cross the street, don’t then just wander along in front of six lanes (車道)of traffic. There’s no need to run or jog, but respect the drivers who respected you enough to stop for you.

1.Who is the text intended for?

A. Drivers. B. Cyclists. C. Police. D. Pedestrians.

2.What does the underlined word “distracted” in Paragraph 2 mean?

A. Considerate. B. Strange.

C. Kind-hearted. D. Absent-minded.

3. In what case would pedestrians in Alberta be fined?

A. Racing against time with drivers.

B. Following crosswalk signals.

C. Crossing the crosswalk area.

D. Walking outside six lanes.

4. What can be a suitable title for the text?

A. Rules for Traffic Police

B. Tips to Keep Safe on Your Feet

C. Things Every Driver Should Know

D. Signals for Both Pedestrians and Drivers
