The art of Palmistry (手相術(shù))
Palm reading, or palmistry, is the ancient art of studying the lines on the palm of the hand to describe a person’s character and foretell future events in a person’s life.
To study a person’s character and future, a palm reader looks carefully at the three main lines on the active hand (the one a person writes with). The reader usually looks first at a person’s Life Line. This begins under the index finger, and goes down towards the wrist. This line describes the way a person lives his or her life. A person with a deep Life Line is energetic and competitive. If a person has a faint line, he or she is more of a thinker than a doer.
The Heart Line runs across the hand, just below the fingers. This line describes one’s emotions or feelings. A person with a deep Heart Line is a peace maker. Family is important to this person. Those with a faint line do not like to be alone. They are often controlled by their emotions.
The Head Line is below the Heart Line. It describes how a person thinks. A person with a long Head Line thinks about things very carefully. Those with a short Head Line are very decisive. A person with a deep Head Line is clever and talkative. Those with a faint Head Line are often messy, but very creative.
Palm readers believe that these lines and marks on the hand can tell us something about our personalities. Try the test on yourself. Do you agree?

Job interviews never seem easy.To get a job,you may have more interviews than you can count. To succeed in an interview, you should pay attention to the following common mistake.
Lack of proper preparations.Failure to gather information on the company and the job before the interview makes a very poor impression on interviews;it suggests that you are not really that interested in the position.
Inappropriate personal appearance.Consider the nature of the position and dress accordingly. When in doubt, dressing somewhat more formally than you think would be expected for the job.Be conservative and pay attention to details, such as shiny shoes, neat hair, etc.First impressions are very important.
Poor non-verbal communication. In addition to what you are saying, your non-verbal behavior is very important in an interview. Are you making eye contact? Are you listening attentively when the interviewer is speaking? Are you giving a firm handshake by the interviews? Are you nervous during the interview?Practice with a friend or in front of a mirror to assess these factors.
Poor attitude.Self-centered behavior(.i.e.a”what’s in it for me”attitude)is very poorly received by interviewers.Ask yourself what you can contribute to the company? What skills and
experience would you bring to the job?
Failure to ask questions.Employers will assess your interest in the company and the position you ask.Proper research before the interview will help ensure that the questions you ask are intelligent ones.
Being disorganized.Make sure you arrive at the company a few minutes early so that you have time to get calm and check your appearance.Arriving late is simply unacceptable,so plan for the unexpected.Always bring an extra copy of your resume and reference to an interview.
Over-or under-answering questions. For most interview questions a “Yes”or “No”answer is not appropriate.Positive more details for an employer and cite examples from personal experience wherever possible.Do not, however, talk endlessly and feel that you have to keep speaking if there’s silence. When you have said what you want to say ,stop talking. If you do not understand a Question,.seek clear explanation before responding.
Failure to send a thank-you note or card following the interview.Take the time to send the thank-you card, which can make an important impact on an employer. Not only does it show your sincere interest in the position, but it also helps make you different from other interview candidates.

第一節(jié) 閱讀理解(共15小題;每小題2分,滿分30分)
閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的A、B、C和D項(xiàng)中,選出最佳選項(xiàng),并在答題卡上將該項(xiàng)涂黑。
A person has to be sixteen to drive, seventeen to see certain movies, and eighteen to vote. People can get terrific discounts on all sorts of stuff-provided they’re over sixty-five. Everywhere we look there are age limits that define what people can and can’t do. But creativity has no boundaries, no limitations. Anyone can invent. And they do. Inventors are popping up at the youngest ages.
Sitting in the car waiting for her mom to return from shopping, Becky decided she might as well try to finish her math homework. But it was growing dark and getting hard to see the paper.
“I didn’t have a flashlight, and I didn’t want to open the car door because then the whole car would light up.” recalled Becky. “So I thought it would be neat to have my paper light up somehow, and that’s when the idea came to me.”
It isn’t every day that a ten-year-old invents a product eagerly sought by several businesses, but that’s exactly what Becky Schroeder did when she created a tool that enabled people to write in the dark. Her invention? The Glo-sheet.
That night Becky went home, trying to imagine different ways of making her paper glow in the dark. She remembered all sorts of glow-in-the-dark toys-like balls and Frisbees-and wondered how they were made. She was determined to find a solution. So they very next day, Beck’s dad took her on an outing to the hardware store. They returned with a pail (桶) of phosphorescent paint. She took the paint and stacks of paper into the darkest room in the house-the bathroom. There, she experimented.
“I’d turn on the light, turn it off, turn it on,” said Becky. “My parents remember me running out the room saying ‘It works, it works! I’m writing in the dark!’ ”
She used an acrylic board and coated it with a specific amount of phosphorescent paint. She took a complicated idea and made it work rather simply. When the coated clipboard is exposed to light, it glows. The glowing board then illuminates or lights up the paper that has been placed on top. Two years after her initial inspiration, in 1974, Becky became the youngest female ever to receive a U.S. patent.
She didn’t actively market her Glo-sheet. She didn’t need to. The New York Times wrote an article about an incredible invention-patented by a twelve-year-old, and the inquiries and orders streamed in.
1. From Paragraph 1 , we can draw a conclusion that _________.
A. it is illegal for one to drive under sixteen
B. people enjoy privileges when over sixty-five
C. one is never too old or too young to invent
D. people hate the limitations that define our behavior
2. What caused Becky to invent Glo-sheet?
A. She was trying to do homework when it got dark.
B. She was having trouble with math problems.
C. She was trying to earn some money.
D. She was working on a school project.
3. What is the meaning of the underlined words “phosphorescent paint” in paragraph 5?
A. paint that acts as a glue                          B. paint that covers a mark
C. paint that becomes hard                         D. paint that glows in the dark
4. What does it mean that Beck “didn’t actively market her Glo-sheet” according to paragraph 8?
A. She kept the original one for her own use.
B. Other people came to her for the Glo-sheet.
C. Becky’s father tried to sell the Glo-sheet.
D. She gave away patent to the government.
5. With which statement would Becky most likely agree?
A. Experience is needed to be a good inventor.
B. Only by inventing things can you know what people need.
C. Always try to sell patent rights to large companies.
D. You never know what you can do unless you try.

About a year ago, I went to stay at a Detroit hotel. I didn’t want to carry too much money with me, so I asked the desk clerk to put a hundred- dollar bill in the safe for me.
The next morning, however, the clerk said he knew nothing about my money. I didn’t have any proof that I had given the man the money. There was nothing I could do but go to the nearest lawyer.
The lawyer advised me to return to the hotel with him and give another hundred-dollar bill to the clerk. This I did. An hour later, I went back to the desk and asked for my money. Since I had the lawyer as an eyewitness to the second hundred-dollar bill, the clerk could not say he knew nothing about it.
Another hour later, I put the second part of the lawyer’s plan into action. This time both the lawyer and I went to the hotel. I asked for the hundred-dollar bill once again, and when the clerk insisted he had already given it to me, I denied(否認(rèn))it. The lawyer said to him, “I saw this gentleman give you a hundred dollars. If you don’t hand it over immediately, I’ll be forced to call the police.”
The clerk realized he had been tricked, so he gave me back the first hundred-dollar bill.
“I don’t know how to thank you enough for getting my money back,” I said to the lawyer. And what you suppose he answered?
He said, “Oh, don’t thank me. That will be a hundred dollars, please.”

Compare your pronunciation with the master version(版本), see how you can do better and have another go. If you do this several times, you will find that each version is better than the last.
B. Why not learn with someone else?
It helps if you can learn with someone else. If you can persuade a friend or family member to study with you, it will make you keep working. Agree times to meet and set goals for the week. And test each other regularly.
C . Don’t get a shock by a word you don’t know
Practise improvising(即興的) ways of getting your meaning across when speaking spontaneously(本能地), even if you don’t know the exact words or phrases. Think of things you might want to say whenever you have spare time. A basic example is the use of tenses. If you don’t know the past tense but want to talk about yesterday, use the verb in the present tense and use the word “yesterday”.
Use facial expressions, hand movements, anything to get your meaning across.
Language learning is also about intuition(直覺).
Guesswork is an important strategy in learning a new language. When listening to recorded material, you aren’t expected to understand everything first time round. If you play the same piece several times, you will most probably understand something new each time. Learn to make maximum use of all the clues you can pick up. For example, what do the speakers sound like? happy, angry, calm etc.
E. Build up your vocabulary.
A wide vocabulary is the key to successful language learning but don’t try to learn too much at once. It’s best to study frequently, for short periods of time. Take a maximum of six or seven items of vocabulary and learn them. Put them into sentences to fix them in your mind, then come back to them later. Much of the vocabulary in the course is presented by topic. And above all, have fun!
