Liverpool, my hometown, is a special city. It is so unique that in 2004 it became a World Heritage(遺產(chǎn))Site.

I recently returned to my home city and my first stop was at a museum on the River Mersey. Blanketed in mist(薄霧),Victorian architecture rose from the banks of the river, responded to the sounds of sea-birds, and appeared unbelievably charming. When I headed toward the centre, I found myself surrounded by buildings that mirror the best palaces of Europe. It is not hard to imagine why, on first seeing the city, most visitors would be overpowered by the beauty of the noble buildings, which are solid signs of Liverpool’s history.

As if to stress its cultural role, Liverpool has more museums and galleries than most cities in Britain. At Walker Art Gallery, I was told that it has the best collections of Victorian paintings in the world, and is the home of modern art in the north of England. However, culture is more than galleries. Liverpool offers many music events. As Britain’s No. 1 music city, it has the biggest city music festival in Europe, and its musicians are famous all over the world. Liverpool is also well-known for its football and other sports events. Every year, the Mersey River Festival attracts thousands of visitors, making the city a place of wonder.

As you would expect from such a city, there are restaurants serving food from around the world. When my trip was about to complete, I chose to rest my legs in Liverpool’s famous Philharmonic pub(酒館). It is a monument to perfection, and a heritage attraction itself.

Being a World Heritage Site, my home city is certainly a place of “outstanding universal value”. It is a treasure house with plenty of secrets for the world to explore.

1.Visitors who see the city for the first time would be deeply impressed by__________.

A. its charming banks B. its famous museums

C. its wonderful palaces D. its attractive buildings

2.Liverpool has important cultural role because __________.

A. it has the best collections of Victorian paintings

B. it has museums, galleries, music festival and sports events

C. the Mersey River Festival attracts thousands of visitors

D. the best palaces of Europe are in Liverpool

3.The author uses the Philharmonic pub to prove that__________.

A. Liverpool is a well-known city for its restaurants

B. Liverpool is an impressive place full of attraction

C. a pub is a wonderful place for visitors to relax themselves

D. a pub is a perfect choice for visitors to complete their journey

With fuel costs rising and airlines finding more fees to impose (強加,征稅)on travelers every day, airfare isn’t getting any cheaper. Since you can’t drive to all your dream destinations, flying is the only way to go sometimes and, undeniably, the fastest. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to find the most affordable fares and also avoid paying as many extra charges as possible when you plan ahead.

Get the best fare. Airlines put out their fare sales on Tuesday morning, making this day the best day to book a flight for less.

Fly during the least popular times. Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday are the slowest days to fly, which means cheaper deals than the rest of the week. You can also find reduced rates on early morning flights, since many people don’t like to get up before the sun to get to the airport. Earlier boarding times can also considerably cut down your chances of getting bumped on an overbooked flight or delayed because of other delayed flights or mechanical issues.

Choose your seat later. Some airlines charge you to pick your seat when you book online, adding even more to the bottom line of your ticket cost. If you show up early on your travel day, you can still get suitable seats. Some of the best seats get held back until flight day, unless others are willing to pay extra for them ahead of time, so you still have the chance at one of those.

Fly on holidays. You already know that summer is the most expensive time to fly, and even though most other times are more affordable, the days surrounding holidays can be crazy. Save big if you’re willing to travel on major holidays, such as Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Don’t wait until the last-minute to book. Many travelers don’t know that there’s a sweet spot for booking and getting the best price on your tickets. Book too early or too late and you could end up paying more than you need to. The best time to book is between three months and six weeks from when you want to travel.

1.The passage is intended to _______.

A. inform us how to book a cheaper ticket

B. tell us how to choose the seat and time for a flight

C. persuade us into travelling by air

D. inform us of some best ways to save money on a flight

2.Which of the following statements is not true?

A. Airline travelers are supposed to pay more for the rising fuel costs

B. Early morning flight will help avoid some bumps and delays.

C. You can only book your seat online before or on your flight day.

D. Booking too early may cost you more money on your tickets.

3.Which is the best time to book the flight for October 2nd?

A. May 15th B. August 15th

C. June 15th D. September 15th

Have you ever wondered?

(1)Why do airplanes take longer to fly west than east?

It can take five hours to go west-east from New York (NY) to London but seven hours to travel east-west from London to NY. The reason for the difference is an atmospheric phenomenon known as the jet(噴射) stream. The jet stream is a very high altitude wind which always blows from the west to the east across the Atlantic. The planes moving at a constant air speed thus go faster in the west-east direction when the air moving with the wind than in the opposite direction.

(2)What would happen if the gravity on Earth was suddenly turned off?

Supposing we could magically turn off gravity. Would buildings and other structures float away? What happened would depend on how strongly the things were attached to the Earth. The Earth is moving at quite a speed moving at over a thousand miles per hour. If you turn something round your head on a string, it goes around in a circle until you let go of the string. Then it flies off in a straight line. “Switching off” gravity would be like letting go of the string. Things not attached to the Earth would fly off in a straight line. People in buildings would suddenly shoot upwards at a great speed until they hit the ceiling. Most things would fly off into space.

1.What information can we get from the first passage?

A. It is the jet stream that affects how fast airplanes fly.

B. Planes go slower when they are moving with the wind.

C. It takes more time to fly from NY to London than from London to NY.

D. The jet stream always blows from the east to the west across the Atlantic.

2.The word “shoot” underlined in the 2nd paragraph probably means“________”.

A. send for B. move quickly C. come out D. grow quickly

3.It can be inferred that without gravity ________.

A. buildings and other structures would float away

B. trees and buildings would not so easily fly off

C. something around your head would not float away

D. everything outside buildings would fly off into space

4.Where can we most probably read this text?

A. In a research paper. B. In a short story.

C. In a travel magazine. D. In a students’ book.

Ever wonder where chocolate chip cookies came from?Or why we use waffles(華夫餅)as ice cream cones?

Mistakes that Worked, written by Charlotte Foltz Jones,award-winning author of non-fiction books for children, offers forty of these unusual tales, along with many interesting drawings and strange and amazing facts.

The book is divided into six parts: food, medicine, toys, accidental things, names, and I find the book great because if not for the book,I would never have known that something was actually accidentally created.Besides,I like to learn real information;I can't stand books with stories that aren't real.Although this is a non-fiction book and is about inventions,it is not a history of technology book;it's more of an easy reading book. This book would be attractive to both boys and girls, and it could actually be either an adult book or a children’s book.

Published in 1991,the book is a bit old and is showing its age now in 2016.Still,it contains lots of great information, even though some facts are not exact.I love the idea of a mistakes book, and I especially like the format, which allows readers to dip in and out of the book easily. However, the entries are not all equally strong. Additionally, if you don’t live in the US,the book makes little sense, since it is full of American references both historically and in terms of customs.

Anyway,Mistakes that Worked is a reminder that failure is not always the end.It is an enlightening book that encourages us to realize that taking risks and learning to experiment is often the best way to learn, even if we don’t end up creating something new and wonderful.

1.What kind of book is Mistakes that Worked?

A. It's a picture book. B. It's a science book.

C. It's an adult book. D. It's a historical book.

2.What can we infer about the author?

A. He reads too little.

B. He is a slow reader.

C. He is a great reader of non-fiction.

D. He enjoys reading books about inventions.

3.Which of the following does the author especially like about the book?

A. Its facts. B. Its organization.

C. Its entries. D. Its reference.

4.What is the author's opinion on the book?

A. It's a fun read. B. It's a perfect book.

C. It makes little sense. D. It's full of factual mistake

For a long time in history, numerous scholars have asked the question:what is beauty? As designers update the latest fashions and artists create their masterpieces, what is considered beautiful changes at an alarming pace.Fifty years ago,the full-figured American actress Marilyn Monroe was a symbol of the American aesthetic(美學(xué)的)value; today, many Hollywood actresses different in appearance from Marilyn’s have taken her taken per place. However, aesthetic values not only differ from generation to generation, but do so along cultural lines as well.Often, what is considered hating one civilization is just the aesthetic appeal in another.Thus it is difficult to give an absolute definition of beauty.

As fundamental physicists,my colleagues and I like to believe that we are involved in a search for a beauty that affects definition. The beauty that we search for is not what is set up through the work of people and subject to the tastes, but rather what has been laid down by nature Physics allows its students to look past outer appearance, into a deeper beauty. As a human being,I am attracted by the visual appeal of a wave crashing on the beach. As a physicist, however I am able to see the deeper beauty of the physical laws that govern such a phenomenon.

In truth, since Albert Einstein put forward the idea that there might be one main physical theory that governs the universe, aesthetics, have become a driving force in modern physics.Einstein and other later physicists have discovered that:Nature,as its most fundamental level,is beautifully constructed. The extraordinary simplicity of the laws that govern the universes is really breathtaking. As Einstein said, it would seem more likely that we should find ourselves living in a "disorderly world,in no way apprehensible through thinking".Yet we are now closer than ever to a full understanding of the universe's beautiful clockwork. As new discoveries and technologies allow us to examine the physical world on deeper and deeper levels, we find that the beauty itself becomes much deeper.

1.The reference to" Marilyn Monroe" in paragraph 2 mainly serves to .

A. show there is no fixed definition of aesthetics

B. provide an example of today's beauty standards

C. compare traditions of the East to the west

D. discuss her abilities as an actress

2.When appreciating a wave crashing on the beach,a physicist sees the beauty of .

A. the visual attraction B. the powerful sounds

C. the lovely creatures D. the physical laws behind

3.Why are Albert Einstein's words mentioned in paragraph 3 ?

A. To detail the functions of physical laws.

B. To highlight the range of Einstein's influence.

C. To stress the very simplicity of the laws of the universe

D. To show that Einstein doubted the beauty of physics.

4.the passage is mainly to .

A. emphasize the influence of physics

B. present a special way of seeing beauty

C. discuss the awareness of across-culture

D. argue the traditional ideas on value

Some people surveyed tasted the sweet, salty, and crunchy together with other tastes of food as they listen to different noises. It shows that louder noises reduced the reported sweetness or saltiness of food while increasing the measure of crunchiness(松脆).

It may go some way to explain why airline food is widely complained about by both the workers and passengers. Andy Woods, a researcher, said, “It’s a general opinion that plane foods aren’t fantastic, but I’m sure airlines do their best, so we wondered if there were other reasons. One thought was that perhaps the background noise may have an effect. NASA gives their space explorers very strong-tasting foods, because for some reason, they can’t taste food that strongly—again, it may have something to do with the background noise.”

In a study, 48 people were fed sweet foods or salty ones, while listening to nothing or noise through earphones. Meanwhile they rated(劃分等級) the foods. In noisier settings, foods were rated less salty or sweet than they were when it was silent, but were rated crunchier. “The evidence shows that if the background noise is loud, your attention might be drawn to that, away from the food.” Dr. Woods said.

“We are still at an early stage of progressing and this is a rather small study to really draw definitive(最完整可靠的) conclusions from,” Dr Woods said, “but they suggest that restaurants could well adapt their choice of food for a given environment.”

Also in the group’s findings there is the suggestion that the overall satisfaction with the food is also related to the degree to which people like what they are hearing.

1.How does the food taste when it is eaten in a noisy environment?

A. Less salty but crunchier.B. Sweeter and saltier.

C. Sweeter but less crunchy.D. Less sweet and crunchy.

2.Why does NASA give their space explorers very strong-tasting foods?

A. Foods become less tasty in space.

B. The explorers lose their sense of taste in space.

C. Loud noises in space may weaken the explorers’ sense of taste.

D. The explorers need tastier foods to keep energetic in space.

3.We can infer from what Dr. Woods said in the 4th paragraph that ________.

A. the environment influences the food a restaurant sells

B. the researchers have made an effective conclusion

C. music will weaken people’s sense of taste while eating

D. listening to nothing while eating is the best choice

4. What would be the best title for the text?

A. The best dinner environment

B. How to change plane foods

C. Listening to music while eating

D. Background noise affects the taste of foods
