【題目】For the last couple of weeks, I had been stuck in front of my computer working on a project that was very important to me. My every waking hour was consumed by the project and although I imagined that I would feel happy after completing parts of the project, I was confused to find that instead, I was feeling rather depressed. I tried a range of methods to help cheer myself up. I had a relaxing bath, cooked a delicious meal to enjoy with my family and even watched a lighthearted movie, but to_no_avail. It was only when I turned to meditation (沉思) for a solution that the answer came to me: turn to nature!

The very next day, I grabbed my camera and a bottle of water and set off to spend a few hours walking in a nature reserve, even though it was pouring with rain. Within a couple of minutes I felt alive again. To be honest, I felt like a young school girl again and had to stop myself from hopping along the path singing Im singing in the rain, a song I used to sing when I was a child. I think as adults we often try too hard to control our inner children and as a result we restrain our own spirits, which only leads to depression and stress.

Interestingly, it has been shown that people who spend 40 minutes walking in a nature reserve have a drop in their blood pressure levels, but this does not happen when they spend a similar amount of time walking in a busy city centre.

If you feel a little low in spirits and know that you have spent too much time indoors, relax completely, remove your shoes and let your inner child come out and play.

C. walking in a busy city centre harms people’s health

He fascinated Victorian England with his 1 skill at cracking cases, based on astute (機(jī)敏的) logical reasoning and grasp of forensic science, not to mention a 2 of disguises and encyclopedic knowledge of the criminal underclass.

But this detective was not Sherlock Holmes but a real life investigator, Jerome Caminada, who, as a new research suggests, helped inspire Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s celebrated hero.

A biography of Caminada reveals a series of 3 similarities between him and the fictional character, in terms of their unorthodox methods and character. It also establishes strong 4 between the real detective’s cases and plot lines used by Doyle. The author, Angela Buckley, has even established that Caminada’s casework involved 5 an alluring (迷人的) and talented criminal, similar to Irene Adler, and that the detective even had a Moriarty-like nemesis who plagued him over the course of several cases until a final, dramatic confrontation. Mrs. Buckley said, “Caminada became a national figure at just the time that Sherlock Holmes was being created. There are so many parallels that it is clear Doyle was using parts of this real 6 for his.”

The son of an Italian father and Irish mother, Caminada was based in Manchester, but was involved in cases which took him across the country, and he enjoyed a nationwide profile in the press, where 7 of his exploits were widely reported. Most of his career was spent with Manchester City Police Force although he later 8, like Holmes, as a “consulting detective”. As the fictional character relied on a network of underworld contacts — the Baker Street Irregulars — so Caminada was known for his extensive web of 9, whom he would often meet in the back pew of a church. These characters helped him build up an encyclopedic knowledge of the criminal fraternity, among whom he would often move in disguise—another tactic in common with Holmes. Like his fictional counterpart, Caminada was noted for his tendency to wander the streets of the roughest neighborhoods alone at night, 10 intervening in any crimes he encountered.

【題目】Phillip Island is a small island and nature reserve off the coast of South Australia, about 140 km from Melbourne. On the island you can see koalas, kangaroos and the main attraction, the Penguin Parade(歸巢)on Summerland Beach.

As dusk was approaching, we made our way down to the beach, as did everyone else. On the beach was a stone grandstand, rather cold on the behind, so bring a coat or blanket to sit on. As it got darker, people talked less, keeping an eye out on the beach to see the arrival of that first penguin.

Suddenly there was movement at the edge of the surf and all heads turned as one. There, standing by the edge of the water was the smallest penguin we had ever seen. He looked left, then right, as if he was considering crossing a busy road and then he ran quickly across to the sand dunes and the penguin holes.

He must have been the scout(偵查員), because after him, there came groups of penguins, some consisted of two or three penguins, and some had about ten or fifteen, but they all made the same mad dash across the sand into the holes, as if they couldn't get there fast enough. The groups started to lessen and finally no more penguins emerged from the sea.

We sat on the grandstand for a while, not talking, just feeling awed(敬畏的) at what we'd just seen. Neither of us had ever seen penguins in the wild before, only in zoos and it was an amazing feeling.

You could see the penguins here every evening and morning, but they weren't in cages or in small pools. The sea was their playground and it is a sight we would definitely recommend to anyone.

You weren't allowed to take flash photographs as it scared them. After the penguins had gone to their holes, you could walk along boardwalks and see them there. That's got to be worth a look.

1What does the text mainly talk about?

A. The main attraction on Phillip Island.

B. The Penguin Parade on Summerland Beach.

2Which of the following shows the right order of the Penguin Parade?

a. The smallest penguin stands in front of the parade and looks around.

b. Groups of penguins go after the smallest penguin and dash into the holes.

c. The smallest penguin runs quickly to the holes.

d. The penguins appear as a whole.

e. There are no more penguins on the sea.

A. d a c b e B. a b c d e

C. a c d b e D. d a b c e

3The text is intended for ___________.

A. teachers B. Parents

C. kids D. travelers

4Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A. The best time to see penguins is at noon.

B. You could take photos at any time.

C. You could see penguins at dawn.

D. You could play with the penguins.

【題目】閱讀下面短文,根據(jù)所給情節(jié)進(jìn)行續(xù)寫,使之構(gòu)成一個(gè)完整的故事。

My husband Andrew, a wise father, teaches our kids how to balance risk with freedom.

We have four chickens: Pecky, Buckbeak, Mayonnaise and Cornflake. My husband made their coop (籠子). It’s beautifully made.

Actually he made it with our sons and daughter. The kids and their father spent several weekends in the garage. He gave them tools because he believed it was important that they could actually make something. He slowly helped them and together, they made the coop. They also made the mistakes of learning-a board cut too short, nails smashed (打碎) by hammers — but in the end, Andrew did some tricks and the coop looked perfect.

The chickens loved their perfectly imperfect home and we also gave them free range in the yard. Andrew encouraged our kids to provide the chickens with quite a big area and explained that to take risks is part of life, and by giving chickens the freedom to wander around and dig for bugs, it is a better experience for them than the confines (限制) of the coop.

Yesterday, they ran around the lawn (草地). We needed to go downtown, knowing that chickens wouldn’t go very far. When we got back, my son, Gordon, ran to check on them. There were Mayonnaise, Cornflake and Buckbeak, looking a mess but still alive. Yet Pecky was nowhere to be seen.

With Andrew, we searched the yard and found some feathers by the trees. Then, we saw more feathers littering the yard. By this time. Gordon started to worry; Pecky was his favorite chicken and his eyes got watery.

Andrew picked Gordon up and held him. As we stood there, beginning to accept that we were now a three-chicken family, we heard it-a soft clucking (咯咯聲) sound under a bush.

【題目】 A youth soccer coach, Hugo Grejada, director of Pro Youth Soccer academy in Chester, New York, shares some tips to help you improve your soccer skills.

Start with basic drills. "Go outdoors, get a ball, and keep it close to your feet," Grejada says, "1If you have a backyard, work on shooting."

2 "It’s a good way of building skills without having the pressure of games. Choose camps that emphasize building skills and go to one of those. There are plenty of camps that begin right after school ends."

Don’t forget to stretch. 3Then do a series of stretches to loosen up your muscles. Don’t forget to take a drink of water before you even step on the field. "Water is important especially in summer, " Grejada says.

Watch the World Cup. Grejada tells his athletes to watch as many games as they can. 4Then, you should try to bring some of their moves into your own game. "Pick up something that you like and practice it, " Grejada says.

Keep practicing. Practice may not seem like the most fun part playing soccer. 5Look for ways to make practice fun by adding some competition to simple drills, and don’t be discouraged if it takes time to master new skills. "If someone was struggling to improve, I would tell him to keep practicing, keep trying. Practice makes perfect."

A. Sign up for a soccer camp.

B. Reduce the pressure of games.
