I moved to this area seven years ago. For years I have had noisy neighbours. Ever since I moved into this flat, I’ve had to put up with noise during the night. I decided I’d had enough and I’ve been looking for a new flat since the beginning of the year. I haven’t found anything till now. Every week I go to the estate agent’s(當?shù)胤康禺a(chǎn)代理人的)office, but it’s the same story. “I might have something by the end of the week” he says, or, “Wait till next week. One flat I saw has been empty for two years. “It’s got a busy road on one side and a railway on the other!” I said loudly, “I want peace and quiet.” Last week I visited the agent again. “I won’t leave till you show me something,” I said. “I’ve got just the flat for you.” I went to see it and I was frightened. “But it’s next to a cemetery!” I cried. “But you won’t have noisy neighbours,” my agent said. “It’s exactly right for peace and quiet!”

Using All Your Strength
A young boy was walking with his father along a country road. When they came across a large tree branch   11  the pathway, the boy asked, “Do you think I could   12  it?”
His father answered, “If you use all your strength, I am sure you can.”
The boy tried   13  to lift, pull and push the branch, but it wouldn’t budge.  14 , he said, “Dad, you were wrong. I can’t do it alone.”

This time, as the boy struggled, his father   15    him. Together they pushed the   16

“Son, the first time you didn’t use all your strength,” his father said. “You didn’t ask me to help.”
This is a valuable   17 . There are many things we can’t do alone, but that doesn’t mean we can’t get them done. We are   18      by resources that can be mobilized (調動) to help us

It’s   24  that we learn to use all our strength. This includes inner resources such as discipline, courage, and even love. It also includes   25  resources. Just as we should be willing to help others, we should be willing to ask others for help.

If you had been in my classes in the early McKee days , you would have seen a skinny young man in his late twenties with messy black hair , eyes that looked with a sign of infection , bad teeth and the hangdog look you see on immigrants in Ellis Island photographs or on pickpockets being arrested .
There were reasons for the hangdog look .
I was born in New York and taken to Ireland before I was four . I had three brothers . My father , an alcoholic , wild man , great patriot , always ready to die for Ireland , abandoned us when I was ten . A baby sister died , twin boys died , two boys were born . My mother begged for food , clothing , and coal to boil water for the tea . Neighbors told her to place us in an orphanage , a place for homeless kids . No , no , never . The shame of it . She hung on . We grew . My brothers and I left school at fourteen , worked , dreamed of America and , one by one , sailed away . my mother followed with the youngest , expecting to live happily ever after . That’s what you are supposed to do in America , but she never had a moment of happy-ever-after .
In New York I worked at laboring jobs till I was put into the United States Army . After two years in Germany I went to college on the GI Bill program to become a teacher . There is probably no field of human activity in which our values and lifestyles are shown more clearly and strongly than they are in theclothes that we choose to wear. The dress of an individual is a kind of “sign language” that communicates a set of information and is usually the basis on which immediate impressions are formed.Traditionally, a concern for clothes was considered to be an affair of females, while men took pride in the fact that they were completely lacking clothes consciousness.
This type of American culture is gradually changing as man’s dress takes on greater variety  and color.Even as early as 1955,a research in Michigan said that men considered that the value of clothing in daily life was very important.White—collar workers in particular viewed dress as a symbol of ability, which could be used to impress or influence others, especially in the work situation. The white-collar worker was described as extremely concerned about the impression his clothing made on his boss.Although blue-collar workers were less aware that they might be judged on the basis of their clothing, they recognized that any difference from the accepted pattern of  dress would be made fun of by fellow workers.
Since that time,of course, the patterns have changed, the typical white-collar worker may now be wearing the blue shirt, while the blue-collar may be wearing a white shirt, but the importance of dress has not become less. Other researchers in recent years have helped to prove its importance in the lives of individuals at various age levels and in different social and economic status groups.

Attitude is an internal state that influences the choices of personal action made by the individual. Some researchers consider that attitudes come from differences between beliefs and ideas; others believe that attitudes come from emotional states. Here, we focus on the effects of attitudes upon behavior, that is, upon the choices of action made by the individual.
The kinds of actions taken by human beings are obviously influenced greatly by attitudes. Whether one listens to classical music or rock, whether one obeys the speed limit while driving, whether one encourages one’s husband or wife to express his or her own ideas—all are influenced by attitudes. These internal states are acquired throughout life from situations one is faced with in the home, in the streets, and in the school.
Of course, the course of action chosen by an individual in any situation will be largely determined by the particulars of that situation. An individual who has a strong attitude of obeying laws may drive too fast when he is in a hurry and no police cars in sight. A child who has a strong attitude of honesty may steal a penny when she thinks no one will notice. But the internal state which remains unchanged over a period of time, and which makes the individual behave regularly in a variety of situations, is what is meant by an attitude.
Attitudes are learned in a variety of ways. They can result from single incidents, as when an attitude toward snakes is acquired by an experience in childhood at the sudden movement of a snake. They can result from the individual’s experiences of success and pleasure, as when someone acquires a positive attitude toward doing crossword puzzles by being able to complete some of them. And frequently, they are learned by copying other people’s behavior, as when a child learns how to behave toward foreigners by observing the actions of his parents. Regardless of these differences, there is something in common in the learning and modification(修正)of attitudes.

D.Attitudes can be learned from one’s parents.

Over the last 70 years.researchers have been studying happy and Unhappy people and finally found out ten factors that make a difference. Our feelings of well-being at any moment are determined to a certain degree by genes. However of all the factors, wealth and age are the top two.
Money can buy a degree of happiness. But once you can afford to feed, clothe and house yourself, each extra dollar makes less and less difference.
Researchers find that,on average, wealthier people are happier. But the link between money and happiness is complex. In the past half-century, average income has sharply increased in developed countries, yet happiness levels have remained almost the same.Once your basic needs are met, money only seems to increase happiness if you have more than your friends, neighbors and colleagues.
“Dollars buy Status(社會地位),and status makes people feel better,” conclude some experts, which helps explain why people who can seek status in other ways-scientists or actors, for example-may happily accept relatively poorly-paid jobs.
In a research,Professor Alex Michalos found that the people whose desires-not just for money, but for friends, family, job,health-rose furthest beyond what they already had, tended to be less happy than those who felt a smaller gap(差距).Indeed, the size of the gap predicted happiness about five times better than income alone.“The gap measures just blow away the only measures of income,”says Michalos.
Another factor that has to do with happiness is age.Old age may not be so bad.“Given all the problems of aging, how could the elderly be more satisfied?” asks Professor Laura Carstensen.
Why are old people happier? Some scientists suggest older people may expect life to be harder and learn to live with it,or they're more realistic about their goals, only setting ones that they know they can achieve. But Carstensen thinks that with time running out, older people have learned to focus on things that make them happy and let go of those that don't.
“People realize not only what they have, but also that what they have cannot-last forever,” she says.“A goodbye kiss to a husband or wife at the age of 85,for example, may bring far more complex emotional responses than a similar kiss to a boy or girl friend at the age of 20.”
小題1:According to the passage, the feeling of happiness _________.
A.has little to do with wealthB.increases gradually with age
C.is measured by desiresD.is determined partly by genes
小題2:Some actors would like to accept poorly-paid jobs because the jobs _________.
A.make them feel much betterB.provide chances to make friends
C.improve their social positionD.satisfy their professional interests
小題3:Aged people are more likely to feel happy because they are more _________.
A.optimisticB.practicalC.successfulD.emotional
小題4:Professor Alex Michalos found that people feel less happy if __________.
A.the gap between reality and desire is bigger
B.they have a stronger desire for friendship
C.their income is below their expectation
D.the hope for good health is greater
