Today is Sunday. The sky is full of sunshine, so does my life. At about 9:00 a.m., I go to the bookstore with my friends. There was a lot of new books. I didn’t know what one to buy because these books were all useful to me. At 10:00, we went to cinema. The film was called Titanic but some people were waiting outside the booking office. It took to us about 3 hours to see it. Having seen the film, everyone was deeply moving. Some of my friends even burst out tears. From the story, I understand that love is noble and valuable. That’s a really wonderful film. It is very worth seeing again.

What a happy day! I hope tomorrow I will be happier!

本句中后面的名詞是復數名詞a lot of new books,謂語動詞要用復數形式,所以要把was改為were。

所以要把what改為which。

動詞短語go to the cinema看電影,這是固定短語。

所以要把but改為and。

It takes sb some time to do sth做某事花掉某人時間。原句中sb做動詞take的賓語,to是多余的,所以要刪除to。

動詞短語burst into tears突然哭起來,所以要把out改為into。

固定句式be well worth doing非常值得做某事,其中副詞well表示程度,修飾形容詞worth。所以要把very改為well。

Feeling Phone-overwhelmed?

Many people are feeling “phone-overwhelmed”, longing for a “simpler time” when smart -phones didn’t exist. Actually you don’t necessarily need to flush your brand-new iPhone down the toilet or vow to never, ever tweet again. Things don’t have to be that black or white.1Here are a few simple steps.

Make a plan. To earn a college degree, you select specific classes happening at specific times and you attend them. This keeps you on track, moving steadily towards your goal.2 Choose specific times to check texts, social media updates, and so on, and then do your best to stick to the plan. Create phone-routines that help you to create the kind of day (and life) that you want.

Enjoy the sound of silence to the fullest. If your phone is continually bleeping and pinging every time “something happens,” it’s going to be tough for you to stay focused- you’ll be tempted to check in and see what's up! It may seem obvious to turn off those noisy notifications.3 You can also create a “call filter” so that certain people's calls come through even if your phone is on “silent. ” That way you can rest easy, knowing you won't miss something truly urgent.

4. For many couples and families, dinnertime is the only time of the day when everyone is gathered together in one place Make dinner a special, sacred time without techie distractions. No phones at the table. If people get restless or bored, strike up an interesting conversation by playing a question game.

Ask yourself, What am I desiring right now? “When you feel the urge to check your phone, and you don’t really “need” to, pause for moment.5Do you seek out company, entertainment or inspiration? Whatever you want, see if you can find a non-phone-related way to satisfy yourself Go for a jog, listen to music or pop by a friend’s house to say "hi "Feeding your spirit in the “real world”, you may discover that the “phone world” just isn't that appealing anymore.

A. Take some phone- free time

B Make dinnertime a phone-free zone

C. Check in with yourself and see what you want.

D. See how it feels to move freely without your phone.

E. You can apply that same logic to your smartphone usage

F. You can take specific steps to create healthier, more balanced relations of technology

Almost every child is scared of something, from monsters in the cupboard to dogs in the park. But the fact that such fears are common and normal doesn’t mean they can be taken lightly. Kids experience fears and phobias (恐懼癥) much more strongly than adults. And the influence of the fear can be physical as well as psychological (心理的). It can build up so they almost seem scared of everything-a kind of childhood anxiety. Dr. Creswell says: “Your child may always seem to expect the worst to happen and lack confidence as they grow up.” So don’t make the same old mistake of treating them as if they’re silly for being a “scared cat”. Handling the fears is essential.

Children can be born nervous and if you have such a baby, you’ll tend to prevent them from getting worried. So if they fear dogs, You’ll keep them away from dogs, but in fact that can just confirm to the child that dogs are scary. What is worse, keeping your child away from what they fear can turn that feeling into a phobia. Instead, you should encourage them to get in touch with the thing they fear, in a safe and supportive environment. Dr. Andy Field, a researcher of childhood fears, says: “You shouldn’t force, for example, an anxious child to go up to a dog. But you can approach it yourself, show them there is nothing to be afraid of, stroke (撫摸) it, and talk about the dog being friendly. Once your child dares to stroke a dog-one that’s good with children, of course-then you should encourage them to carry on until they feel calmer, and reward them for‘being brave’.”

1Children’s fears are usually taken lightly because .

A. they will not develop into phobias B. their influence is psychological

C. they exist widely in the world D. they will disappear gradually

2If we fail to help children to overcome fears, they will .

A. make the same old mistake B. overcome them by themselves

C. experience the worst of things D. grow up lacking self-confidence

3According to Dr. Andy Field, if a child is afraid of a cat, parents should .

A. tell the child not to be afraid of it B. show the child it’s safe to approach it

C. keep the child away from it D. ask the child to stroke it

When John was growing up, other kids felt sorry for him. His parents always had him weeding the garden, carrying out the garbage and delivering newspapers. But when John reached adulthood, he was better off than his childhood playmates. He had more job satisfaction, a better marriage and was healthier. Most of all, he was happier.Far happier.

These are the findings of a 40year study that followed the lives of 456 teenage boys from Boston. The study showed that those who had worked as boys enjoyed happier and more productive lives than those who had not. “Boys who worked in the home or community gained competence (能力) and came to feel they were worthwhile members of society”said George Vaillant, the psychologist (心理學家) who made the discovery. “And because they felt good about themselves, others felt good about them.”

Vaillant's study followed these males in great detail. Interviews were repeated at ages 25, 31 and 47. Under Vaillant, the researchers compared the men's mentalhealth scores with their boyhood activity scores. Points were awarded for parttime jobs, housework, effort in school, and ability to deal with problems.

The link between what the men had done as boys and how they turned out as adults was surprisingly sharpThose who had done the most boyhood activities were twice as likely to have warm relations with a wide variety of people, five times as likely to be well paid and 16 times less likely to have been unemployed. The researchers also found that IQ and family social and economic class made no real difference in how the boys turned out.

Working—at any age—is important.Childhood activities help a child develop responsibility, independence, confidence and competence—the underpinnings (基礎) of emotional health. They also help him understand that people must cooperate and work toward common goals. The most competent adults are those who know how to do this.Yet work isn't everything. As Tolstoy once said,“One can live magnificently in this world if one knows how to work and how to love, to work for the person one loves and to love one's work.”

1What do we know about John?

A.He enjoyed his career and marriage.

B.He had few childhood playmates.

C.He received little love from his family.

D.He was envied by others in his childhood.

2Vaillant's words in Paragraph 2 serve as ________

A.a description of personal values and social values

B.an analysis of how work was related to competence

C.an example for parents' expectations of their children

D.an explanation why some boys grew into happy men

3Vaillant's team obtained their findings by ________

A.recording the boys' effort in school

B.evaluating the men's mental health

C.comparing different sets of scores

D.measuring the men's problem solving ability

4What does the underlined word “sharp” probably mean in Paragraph 4?

Honesty, my mum always used to tell me, is the best policy. But when it comes to medicine, I had assumed it was important to always be honest with my patients. After all, the doctor-patient relationship is based on trust, and therefore honesty is essential, or so I thought.

I had just started working in geriatrics(老年病科). Mr. McMahon 1bring in when his body was found very swollen(浮腫的). I took a medical history 2his daughter who had accompanied him in the ambulance. She'd been his main care for years. I stood 3 (look) at him as she gave a detailed history. "Has he lost any weight recently?" I asked, "Well, it's funny you should mention that, but yes." She said slowly. There was silence for a few moments. "Why? What are you worried about?" she asked. She was obviously very involved in his care and it was only fair that I told 4 the truth. "Well, we need to prove it's not cancer." I said and talked briefly about some of the tests I was going to order.

Half an hour later, a nurse called me: "Mr. McMahon's daughter broke downshe said you told her he had cancer." My heart sank. By the time I arrived at the ward, my consultant was already there, explaining that we still had to run lots of tests and that it was by no means confirmed 5 he had cancer. I stood silently at the end of the bed. My consultant was obviously angry with me and as we left Mr. McMahon, she turned to me. "Why on earth did you do that?" she asked in disbelief. I looked at her and bit my lip. "She asked me what I was worried about and I told her." I said, hanging my head. "And give her more 6 (worry) about?" replied my consultant. "You don't say the word 'cancer' until it's confirmed. 7 you suspect it, think very carefully before you tell people."

In my culture, it 's not accepted or normal to go against my parents' wishes. I belong to a small and native community in the Oaxaca region of southern Mexico. We' ve lived here for centuries, and my family has been growing cotton for as long as anyone can remember.

When I was small, I had a lot of work to do. My father was sick and we were poor, so my sister and I would get up very earlier every morning to prepare food for the whole family. After school we would run home quickly to help do housework. On weekends, I would go to the village market to sell our cotton. Every time I sold something, it was good news for the whole family.

When I became a teenager, I wanted to study to become a secretary. By Working in an office I would be able to earn more money, which would be good for my family. I knew I was smart and that I would do a good job, but my parents refused to let me study. I listened to them and followed their advice in order not to make them unhappy.

Years later, some students from California came to our village. They were organizing an educational workshop for local people. We would learn new things and technology about growing cotton, and have the chance to network. This was a good chance for me to learn something new and useful. Of course I was willing to take part in it, but my parents said no again this time.

I have wonderful and generous parents, who are kind to everybody around them. Even when our family could hardly afford food, they would welcome guests with coffee and cookies. I knew they refused me because they wanted the best for me. I knew they were worried about me being away from them, but I knew they were wrong. Attending this workshop would be good for our family.
