【題目】Breathing in polluted air on busy roads is as harmful as passively smoking ten cigarettes a day, new research has found. The drop in pollution had the same effects as avoiding four cigarettes a day. One of the researchers, Saskia van der Zee, explained why they compared the effects of pollution lo passive smoking. “We thought that passive smoking would be easier to understand,” she told The Times. ‘‘You don’t want your neighbors to come into your house and smoke three cigarettes every day.”

Earlier this week, doctors warned that Britain is facing a major health emergency unless diesel(柴油)cars are taken off the roads. Emissions (排放物) from diesel cars arc already contributing to smog which has been linked to the deaths of 40,000 people a year. Health charities, medical leaders and environmental groups have called for a modern Clean Air Act lo bring pollution under control. Separately, more than 300 doctors in the Doctors Against Diesel group have written to Theresa May, calling for a diesel reduction.

Professor John Middleton, president of the UK Faculty of Public Health, said, “Diesel is the primary source of nitrogen dioxide(二氧化氮)in urban areas and is linked to health effects that begin before birth and extend throughout life, from childhood lung development to increased risk of heart disease, stroke and lung cancer. It is high lime lo handle the problem.”

London is already planning to introduce an “emission zone” which diesel drivers would be charged to enter, and other cities are set to follow. But exerts are desperate to find new ways to control the damage done by pollution. Diesel drivers in Westminster have been told they may soon be charged 50 percent extra for on-street parking. And Sadiq Khan, the mayor of London, submitted a 3,500 plan to encourage drivers to switch to petrol or electric cars.

“Cutting diesel emissions would therefore have an immediate effect on children’s personal exposure, and improve their long-term health.” A government spokesman said.

A. It’s easier for people to understand.

B. It’s hard for people to quit smoking.

2How can the major health emergency be solved according to Britain doctors?

A. Give up smoking.

B. Abandon diesel cars.

C. Make strict laws.

D. Schedule yearly exams.

3What can we infer from what Professor John Middleton said?

A. Cutting diesel emissions is urgent.

D. People ignored the harm of diesel.

4What is the purpose of the plan put forward by Sadiq Khan?

【題目】閱讀理解
A few years ago, I took a sightseeing trip to Washington, DC. I saw many of our nation's treasures, and I also saw a lot of citizens on the street—unfortunate ones, like beggars and homeless folks.
Standing outside the Ronald Reagan Center, I heard a voice ask. “Can you help me?” When I turned around, I saw an old blind woman with her hand extended. In a natural reflex (自然反射), I reached into my pocket, pulled out all of my loose change and placed it in her hand without even looking at her. I hated being disturbed by a beggar.
But the blind woman smiled and said: “I don't want your money. I just need help finding the post office.” In an instant, I realized what I had done. I had acted with prejudice (偏見)---I had judged another person simply for what I thought she had to be.
I hated what I saw in myself. This incident brought back my central belief. It reminded me that I believed in being humble (卑下的), even though I'd lost that belief for a moment.
The thing I had forgotten about myself is that I am an immigrant (移民). I left Honduras and arrived in the US at the age of 15. I started my new life with two suitcases, my brother, my sister and a strong mother. Through the years, I have been a dish washer, roofer, mechanic, cashier and pizza delivery driver, among many other humble jobs. Eventually, I became a network engineer.
In my own life, I have experienced many acts of prejudice. I remember a time at age 17---I was busboy (餐館工), and I heard a father tell his little boy that if he did not do well in school, he would end up like me. I have also seen the same treatment of family and friends, so I know what it's like, and I should have known better.
But now, living my American middle-class lifestyle, it is too easy to forget my past, to forget who I am and where I have been, and to lose sight of where I want to go. The blind woman cured me of my blindness. She reminded me of my belief in being humble, and to always keep my eyes and heart open.
By the way, I helped that lady to the post office. And in writing this essay, I hope to thank her for the priceless lesson she gave me.
(1)At the very beginning, the author regarded the old blind woman as .
A.a great teacher
B.a poor beggar
C.a humble immigrant
D.a passer-by asking for help
(2)How did the author feel when the old woman asked him for directions?
A.Concerned.
B.Confused.
C.Amused.
D.Ashamed.
(3)What is the lesson that the author learned from the old woman?
A.Help but don't judge.
B.Efforts will pay off.
C.Stay humble, stay happy.
D.Kindness is well rewarded.

Have you ever seen any students whose trousers hang so low you can see their underwear? What do you think of that? Fashionable? Some of today's teenagers are big fans of such a look..
The headmaster of a school in central Italy has asked students to stop wearing low-rise jeans that expose underwear and part of the body. His request came after a class trip. One day, he saw one boy's baggy trousers slide to his feet .
But in Italy, a nation that takes fashion very seriously, the suggestion caused a debate among parents, teachers and students. The issue is whether the headmaster's request will limit students' freedom—or whether dress in Italian schools is too casual.
“We do not want to kick fashion out.” the headmaster explained, “but extremes of fashion like this are not right in school.” Many other schools have now requested that their students also stop wearing such trousers.
Ludovica Gaudio, 14, wore extremely low trousers exposing orange underwear in class. It was cold, so she wore a matching orange scarf. “I don't really feel comfortable in those sorts of jeans,” said Sarah Lattanzi, “in winter, when dressed like that, it's quite cold and I am afraid my stomach will ache.”
A. But recently this trend has been at the center of an argument in Italian middle schools.
B. A parents' group praised the move in favor of good taste, while others advised schools to stop worrying about fashion and fix up old school buildings.
C. He pointed out that this way of dressing is not suitable for school.
D. Most students have simply ignored the request.
E. Another 14-year-old said she would probably respect the request, simply for practical reasons.
F. Requests.
G. Schools should pay attention to things more important than students' clothes.

【題目】About three decades ago, China was known as the “Bicycle Kingdom”. But the two-wheeled way of transport’s popularity began to fade, with many bikes soon replaced by their fuel-powered competitors.

But recent months have seen a revival of the bike across China, with an increasing number of people choosing cycling instead of driving to schools, to workplaces or to do sightseeing. The introduction of bike-sharing systems has brought the trend to a new level.

People can unlock the shared bikes by simply using their smartphones. The bikes are equipped with GPS and can be left anywhere in public for the next user. They’re popular among many Chinese people as they provide an effective solution to the “l(fā)ast mile” problem, which refers to the final leg of a person’s journey.

However, the systems have also led to problems such as illegal parking, damage and theft. Last month, two nurses in Beijing were placed under arest for five days for putting locks on two shared bikes.

“Bike-sharing is a greener method of transportation and provides a user-friendly experience,” said Liu Xiaoming, vice-minister of transport. “ But it’s a combination of online and offline business. Operators are usually strong in online services, but lack offline business experience, which causes problems.”

Now, Chinese service operators are trying to handle these problems. For example, a bike-sharing company called Mobike sets a 100-piont credit score for each user, with points taken in the case of bad behavior. Once a score drops below 80, bike rental is increased to 100 yuan per 30 minutes, up from 0.5-1 yuan.

1The underlined word “revival” in paragraph 2 probably means ________.

A. survival B. recovery

C. existence D. popularity

2The bike-sharing systems are popular because ________.

A. they are very effective B. they can be picked up anywhere

C. they are equipped with GPS D. they help to solve the “l(fā)ast mile” problem

3To solve the problems of illegal parking, damage and theft, operators need to ________.

A. offer stronger online services B. combine online and offline business

C. provide credit score for users D. obtain more offline business experience
