13.Chimps(黑猩猩) will cooperate in certain ways,like gathering in war parties to protect their territory.But beyond the minimum requirements as social beings,they have little instinct (本能) to help one another.Chimps in the wild seek food for themselves.Even chimp mothers regularly decline to share food with their children.who are able from a young age to gather their own food.
In the laboratory,chimps don't naturally share food either.If a chimp is put in a cage where he can pull in one plate of food for himself or,with no great effort,a plate that also provides food for a neighbor to the next cage,he will pull at random---he just doesn't care whether his neighbor gets fed or not.Chimps are truly selfish.
Human children,on the other hand are extremely cooperative.From the earliest ages,they decide to help others,to share information and to participate in achieving common goals.The psychologist Michael Tomasello has studied this cooperativeness in a series of experiments with very young children.He finds that if babies aged 18months see an unrelated adult with hands full trying to open a door,almost all will immediately try to help.
There are several reasons to believe that the urges to help,inform and share are not taught.but naturally possessed in young children.One is that these instincts appear at a very young age before most parents have started to train children to behave socially.Another is that the helping behaviors are not improved if the children are rewarded.A third reason is that social intelligence develops in children before their general cognitive(認(rèn)知的)skills,at least when compared with chimps.In tests conducted by Tomtasell,the children did no better than the chimps on the physical world tests,but were considerably better at understanding the social world
The core of what children's minds have and chimps'don't is what Tomasello calls shared intentionality.Part of this ability is that they can infer what others know or are thinking.But beyond that,even very young children want to be part of a shared purpose.They actively seek to be part of a"we",a group that intends to work toward a shared goal.
33.What can we learn from the experiment with chimps?A
A.Chimps seldom care about others'interests.
B.Chimps tend to provide food for their children.
C.Chimps like to take in their neighbors'food.
D.Chimps naturally share food with each other.
34.Michael Tomasello's tests on young children indicate that theyA.
A.have the instinct to help others
B.know how to offer help to adults
C.know the world better than chimps
D.trust adults with their hands full
35.The passage is mainly aboutC.
A.the helping behaviors of young children
B.ways to train children's shared intentionality
C.cooperation as a distinctive human nature
D.the development of intelligence in children.

14.If you think a high-factor sunscreen (防曬霜) keeps you safe from harmful rays,you may be wrong.Research in this week's Nature shows that while factor 50reduces the number of melanomas (黒瘤) and delays their occurrence,it can't prevent them.Melanomas are the most aggressive skin cancers.You have a higher risk if you have red or blond hair,fair skin,blue or green eyes,or sunburn easily,or if a close relative has had one.Melanomas are more common if you have periodic intense exposure to the sun.Other skin cancers are increasingly likely with long-term exposure.
There is continuing debate as to how effective sunscreen is in reducing melanomas---the evidence is weaker than it is for preventing other types of skin cancer.A 2011Australian study of 1,621people found that people randomly selected to apply sunscreen daily had half the rate of melanomas of people who used cream as needed.A second study,comparing 1,167people with melanomas to 1,101who didn't have the cancer,found that using sunscreen routinely,alongside other protection such as hats,long sleeves or staying in the shade,did give some protection.This study said other forms of sun protection---not sunscreen---seemed most beneficial.The study relied on people remembering what they had done over each decade of their lives,so it's not entirely reliable.But it seems reasonable to think sunscreen gives people a false sense of security in the sun.
Many people also don't use sunscreen properly---applying insufficient amounts,failing to reapply after a couple of hours and staying in the sun too long.It is sunburn that is most worrying---recent research shows five episodes of sunburn in the teenage years increases the risk of all skin cancers.
The good news is that a combination of sunscreen and covering up can reduce melanoma rates,as shown by Australian figures from their slip-slop-slap campaign.So if there is a heat wave this summer,it would be best for us,too,to slip on a shirt,slop on (抹上) sunscreen and slap on a hat.
32.What does the research in Nature say about a high-factor sunscreenA
A.It is ineffective in preventing melanomas.
B.It is ineffective in case of intense sunlight.
C.It is ineffective with long-term exposure.
D.It is ineffective for people with fair skin.
33.What do we learn from the 2011Australian study of 1,621peopleD
A.Sunscreen should be applied alongside other protection measures.
B.High-risk people benefit the most from the application of sunscreen.
C.Irregular application of sunscreen does women more harm than good.
D.Daily application of sunscreen helps reduce the incidence of melanomas.
34.What does the author say about the second Australian studyC
A.It misleads people to rely on sunscreen for protection.
B.It helps people to select the most effective sunscreen.
C.It is not based on direct observation of the subjects.
D.It confirms the results of the first Australian study.
35.What does the author suggest to reduce melanoma ratesA
A.Using both covering up and sunscreen.
B.Staying in the shade whenever possible.
C.Using covering up instead of sunscreen.
D.Applying the right amount of sunscreen.

12.Our eyes may be playing tricks on us.New research shows that sometimes people physically see what they want to see.Cornell University social psychologist David Dunning carried out experiments to test whether wishful thinking can actually affect what we see.
"It's well proved from what is experienced in everyday life,and from the laboratory as well,that people think what they want to think,"he says."We're taking this a step further.We're asking if desires and fears can actually affect what people physically see."
Dunning and his assistants told volunteers that a computer game would show them either a letter or number to decide whether they would drink orange juice or fruit syrup(果子露).
As they wrote in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology,the computer would flash an  ambiguous  picture,which could be seen as the letter"B"or the number"13".Volunteers who were told that a letter would get them orange juice most often reported seeing"B".Those who were told that a number would get them orange juice most often saw"13".
The researchers also used a hidden camera to track(追蹤)volunteers'eye movements,particularly the first eye movement."We don't control them,"Dunning says,"and they don't even know that we are watching them,so it honestly mirrors what a person is seeing."
"This research suggests that the brain is doing a lot of work between the eye and the conscious awareness to affect what we think,"Dunning concludes."Before we even see the world,our brain has decided to keep what we want to see and avoid what we don't want to see."

67.The passage is mainly aboutB.
A.the eye movements of some volunteers
B.new findings on what may affect what we see
C.a(chǎn) social psychologist named Dunning and his assistants
D.a(chǎn) paper in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology
68.In Dunning's experiment,if told a"13"can get you orange juice,which of the following most possibly can you see?C

69.The underlined word"ambiguous"most probably meansB.
A.different           B.unclear        C.important        D.ugly
70.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to Dunning's findings?A
A.The brain can influence what people see.
B.The brain forgets what it wants to see.
C.The eyes can't see without the brain.
D.The brain does not relate to the eyes.
