Transforming Obstacles into Benefits

A group of frogs was traveling through the woods and two of them fell into a deep pit. Immediately, all the other frogs in the group   1   the pit and watched as the   2   frogs tried to jump out. The pit was very   3   , so the frogs on top started yelling at the two frogs in the pit to give up.  4   the trapped frogs kept trying, the crowd yelled louder, “Give up. You’re   5   dead.” After a while, one of the exhausted frogs took heed to what the others were saying, and fell down and died.

But   6  , the second frog kept jumping as hard as she could despite the   7   remarks. Finally, with one brave leap, she   8   it out of the pit!

This amazing   9   occurred because the second frog was   10   and unable to hear what the others had been saying. She thought they had been   11   her on the entire time they were yelling! What she had   12   perceived (理解) as encouragement inspired her to try harder and succeed against all odds. And that made all the   13  !

With a   14   mindset, and being deaf to other’s opinions, the second frog made use of such negativity to overcome   15   and reach her goals by using it as encouragement.  16  , when we get round others’ criticism, or laughter, we can do   17   we set our minds to, just as the second frog did. But, if we are not deaf like this frog, who could not be   18   by others due to a physical condition, we need the   19   to guide us to the proper way, so as not to be blindly   20   by worldly opinion.

Over the past few decades, more and more countries have opened up the markets, increasingly transforming the world economy into one free-flowing global market. The question is:Is economic globalization   50  for all?
According to the World Bank, one of its chief supporters, economic globalization has helped reduce   51  in a large number of developing countries. It quotes one study that shows increased wealth   52  to improved education and longer life in twenty-four developing countries as a result of integration (融合) of local economies into the world economy. Home to some three billion people, these twenty-four countries have seen incomes   53  at an average rate of five percent—compared to two percent in developed countries.
Those who   54  globalization claim that economies in developing countries will benefit from new opportunities for small and home-based businesses.   55 , small farmers in Brazil who produce nuts that would originally have sold only in   56  open-air markets can now promote their goods worldwide by the Internet.
Critics take a different view, believing that economic globalization is actually   57  the gap between the rich and poor. A study carried out by the U.N.-sponsored World Commission on the Social Dimension of Globalization shows that only a few developing countries have actually   58  from integration into the world economy and that the poor, the uneducated, unskilled workers, and native peoples have been left behind.   59 , they maintain that globalization may eventually threaten emerging businesses. For example, Indian craftsmen who currently seem to benefit from globalization because they are able to   60  their products may soon face fierce competition that could put them out of   61 . When large-scale manufacturers start to produce the same goods, or when superstores like Wal-Mart move in, these small businesses will not be able to   62  and will be crowded out.
One thing is certain about globalization—there is no   63 . Advances in technology combined with more open policies have already created an interconnected world. The   64  now is finding a way to create a kind of globalization that works for the benefit of all.                                                  (347 words)

科目:高中英語(yǔ) 來(lái)源:河北省保定市第二中學(xué) 2010屆高三考前強(qiáng)化訓(xùn)練試題集(一)英語(yǔ) 題型:閱讀理解

Even plant can run a fever, especially when they’re under attack by insects or disease. But unlike human, plants can have their temperature taken from 3, 000 feet away - straight up. A decade ago, adopting the infrared (紅外線)scanning technology developed for military purposes and other satellites, physicist Stephen Paley came up with a quick way to take the temperature of crops to determine which ones are under stress. The goal was to let farmers precisely target pesticide (殺蟲劑)spraying rather than rain poison on a whole field, which invariably includes plants that don’t have pest (害蟲)problems.
Even better, Paley’s Remote Scanning Services Company could detect crop problems before they became visible to the eye. Mounted on a plane flown at 3, 000 feet at night, an infrared scanner measured the heat emitted by crops. The data were transformed into a color - coded map showing where plants were running“ fevers”. Farmers could then spot - spray, using 50 to 70 percent less pesticide than they otherwise would.
The bad news is that Paley’s company closed down in 1984, after only three years. Farmers resisted the new technology and long - term backers were hard to find. But with the renewed concern about pesticides on produce, and refinements in infrared scanning, Paley hopes to get back into operation. Agriculture experts have no doubt the technology works. “This technique can be used on 75 percent of agricultural land in the United States, ” says George Oerther of Texas A & M. Ray Jackson , who recently retired from the Department of Agriculture, thinks remote infrared crop scanning could be adopted by the end of the decade. But only ff Paley finds the financial backing which he failed to obtain 10 years ago.
56.Plants will emit an increased amount of heat when they are________.
  A. sprayed with pesticides     B. facing an infrared scanner
  C. in poor physical condition   D. exposed to excessive sun rays
57.In order to apply pesticide spraying precisely, we can use infrared scanning to________.
  A. estimate the damage to the crops    B. measure the size of the affected area
  C. draw a color -coded map          D. locate the problem area
58.Farmers can save a considerable amount of pesticide by________.
  A. resorting to spot – spraying   B. consulting infrared scanning experts
  C. transforming poisoned rain    D. detecting crop problems at an early stage
59.The application of infrared scanning technology to agriculture met with some difficulties________.,
  A. the lack of official support        B. its high cost
  C. the lack of financial support      D. its failure to help increase production
60.Infrared scanning technology may be brought back into operation because of________.
  A. the desire of farmers to improve the quality of their produce
  B. growing concern about the excessive use of pesticides on crops
  C. the forceful promotion by the Department of Agriculture
  D. full support from agricultural experts

B
Sir Richard Branson today offered a $ 25,000,000 prize for scientists who find a way to save the planet from the effects of climate change.
Supported by the former US vice-president A1 Gore and other environmentalists, the boss of Virgin Atlantic airlines called for scientists to come up with a way to take greenhouse gases out of the atmosphere.
“What we are doing is making sure we get the most carbon dioxide-friendly planes. We promise that 100% of profits we make from our transportation business are put into things like the prize we've offered today. We shall convince people that we are facing a threat which is urgent and there’s no superhero. We have no hope of a meaningful solution unless we find a way to work together.” he said.
Mr Gore said global warming was man-made and was like to the planet suffering from a “fever”. He said, "Humans had slipped into a way of thinking that was centered on ‘short term satisfaction’, and now meet the challenge of ‘transforming ourselves and changing the structures of everything we do’," he said.
Reacting to the launch of the prize, Tony Jupiter, the Friends of the Earth's director, warned against wasting time waiting for new inventions. He said, "Sir Richard' s initiative (初衷) may encourage inventors to develop a wonder technology to deal with carbon dioxide of the atmosphere. But many of the ways, such as energy efficiency and renewables, already exist, and it is essential that these be put into practice as soon as possible. Moreover, Sir Richard must also look at his business activities and the contribution they make to climate change. The world will find it very difficult to settle climate change if air travel continues to expand and space tourism is developed."
40. Sir Richard Branson is ________.
A. a scientist concerned for climate change  B. a businessman working for A1 Gore

A. ask people to change the way of thinking
B. compare global warming to an Earth's fever
C. show how serious and urgent the problem is
D. call for more attention to the launch of the prize
42. What is file main idea of the passage?
A. It is important for people to save our planet.
B. Humans are to blame for causing climate change.
C. Scientists are trying to take carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere.
D. A prize was offered for solutions to global warming.
43. How was Tony Jupiter’s attitude to space tourism?
A. Negative.     B. Positive.     C. Optimistic.      D. Neutral (中立).
