Five Simplification Steps to Experiencing Happiness
Happiness is never a permanent condition; it is made up of individual conditions that give rise to happiness. The Hungarian-American psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi calls this condition “flow”: becoming so absorbed in an activity that nothing else seems to matter. You cannot manufacture happiness — but you can prepare the soil for happiness to grow. Researchers have found the following five qualifications in their studies of happy people.
【1】______ Your working environment has a major influence on your experience of happiness. If you are surrounded by staff who grumble and have a negative attitude, it will be much more difficult for you to experience flow than it would be on a harmonious team. Identify clearly which people in your working environment suffer from chronic unhappiness and might infect you with it on an unconscious level. Keep a greater distance from those people or ask for a transfer.
【2】____ People who have to devote their attention to several activities at once are unable to get into the flow. You will be able to experience those moments of happiness only when you engage in an activity with your whole being.
【3】_____ People who experience flow have managed to turn the restrictions of their working environment into opporunities. They see themselves as the criterion (標準) for their quality. Recognition from others or money they earn recede into the background. Among the people who Csikszentmihalyi discovered to be experiencing the greatest degree of happiness, there was a very simple worker in a steel mill who was popular with everyone on account of his specialized knowledge and willingness to help.
【4】______ People who feel like victims and don’t live but “are lived” lose their ability to enjoy themselves even if their work is exemplary. So change your job, even if the new one doesn’t pay as well or is less prestigious (有聲望的) . People who find happiness in their work will work so well that sooner or later they will profit, even on the level of money and prestige.
【5】______ Astonishingly, work is easier to enjoy than free time. Working life includes goals, rules, and challenges. On the other hand, free time is unstructured and it takes effort to organize it in such a way as to make it enjoyable. So don’t be reluctant to plan your free time and structure it deliberately. People who don’t waste their free time have a more positive awareness of life; they live longer and they are less often sick. However, people who spend their time at work looking forward eagerly to going home and to the weekend seldom experience flow. Only 18% of all those questioned by Csikszentmihalyi experienced flow in the context of free time, and in almost all cases where they did, it was in the context of an organized hobby.

【題目】The United States estimates that about one out of every 10 people on the planet today is at least 60 years old. By 2050, it’s projected to be one out of 5. This means that not only will there be more old people, but there will be relatively fewer young people to support them.
Professor Richard Lee of the University of California at Berkeley says this aging of the world has a great effect on economics. “Population aging increases the concentration of population in the older ages and therefore it is costly,” he said.
Aging populations consume (消耗) more and produce less. With more people living longer, it could get expensive. But Mr. Lee says with continuing increases in worker productivity and smart planning, it can be manageable.
Societies have different methods for caring for the elderly, but each carries a cost. Generally, there are three types of support. Seniors can live off the wealth they gained when they were younger. They can rely on their family to take care of them, or they can rely on the government.
In industrialized nations, governments created publicly-funded (公共資助的) support systems. These worked relatively well until recent years, when aging population growth in places like the United States and Western Europe began to gradually weaken the systems finances. These nations now face some tough choices. Mr. Lee says the elderly in some of these countries must either receive less money, retire later or increase taxes to make the system continuable.
Most developing nations haven’t built this type of government-funded support, but have instead relied on families to care for their elderly. These nations also generally have a much younger population, which means their situation is not as urgent as more developed nations. But Mr. Lee says that doesn’t mean they can ignore the issue. “Third World countries should give very careful thought to this process, to population aging and how it may affect their economies — now, before population aging even becomes an issue,” he explained.

B. have failed to provide support for the old
C. will be replaced by other support systems

【題目】I went to Arizona earlier this month to see what the college of the future might look like. What I found is an exciting new era of higher education that will help more students get a great, personalized education at an affordable price.
This future may not always include the lecture halls, dormitories, and other features of the traditional college experience. Instead, the colleges I visited are experimenting with ways for students to get their degrees online, allowing them to take courses any place and at any time.
These “colleges without walls,” as they are sometimes called, are at the forefront of the effort to broaden access to higher education, especially for low-income students with full-time jobs and families. During my visit, I heard encouraging stories of students who were taking advantage of these flexible learning models to pursue degrees that could put them on paths to new careers.
One of those students was Shawn Lee. He had a compelling story: After dropping out of college decades ago, he found himself in a series of low-paying, often back-breaking jobs. He recently decided to get his degree when he had his first child and wanted to start building a better life.
Tucked away in an industrial park in Tempe, Rio Salado didn’t look much like a traditional institute of higher education. There were no students running to class. Just a couple of glass-faced office buildings. The college had just 22 full-time faculty serving 60,000 students, with more than half of them attending classes online.
Several students I met during my visit said they liked learning online. “I’ve taken college classes in a big auditorium with herds of people. There was no personal connection,” one student said. “Now I can reach my teacher with the click of a mouse.”
After several days’ visit, I left Arizona feeling quite optimistic about what the future holds for higher education.
【1】What does “colleges without walls” in the third paragraph refer to?
A. Colleges that have no walls around.
B. Colleges that students attend online.
C. Colleges that can be entered freely.
D. Colleges that give students more freedom.
【2】What made Shawn Lee return to attend college again?
A. That he has nothing to do.
B. That he couldn’t find a job.
C. That the cost of the college is low.
D. That he wanted to find a better job.
【3】How did the writer feel after the visit?
A. Hopeful. B. Dissatisfied. C. Disappointed. D. Upset.
【4】What is the writer’s purpose by writing this passage?
A. To explain what “colleges without walls” are.
B. To advertise the colleges.
C. To encourage people to attend higher education.
D. To introduce a new model of education.

Simplify Your Life
Less is more. This is why we say: reduce things by half instead of doubling them, get rid of junk instead of piling it up,relax instead of stressing, slow down instead of speeding up.Apply these principles in your everyday life in a conscious way.You will then find yourself well along on your journey to simplification.

When you concentrate on one task, you find you have energy that you didn't even know you had. Just imagine: you are at a fair and you have to carry two heavy pigs over 100 yards. If you keep grabbing one and then the other,it will take forever, because one of them will keep slipping out from under your arm and running off.But if you tie one pig in a place, pick up the other, gather all your strength and make a dash for the finish line, pause for a moment, run back and get the other one,and with great determination, carry the second pig to the finish line, then you can be sure of success.

The pressure at work is on the increase in all occupations. In the modern nuclear family, the expectations that formerly would have been shared among all the relatives are now concentrated on the individual partner.
If you have the feeling that 24 hours per day are not enough for all the things you need to do,then it's not because the day has too few hours, but because you have too many activities.A simple fact that overloaded people often tend to forget. The solution is equally simple: refuse to accept so many work assignments in your private life or your working life.

"I can handle stress" is regarded as a positive statement in the world of work.People who can handle stress are given more and more to cope with -- until one day they break.
Pay careful attention to the signs that tell you that you are under more stress than you can cope with. These
If you have any of these symptoms, change your life goals and decrease your tolerance of stress.Say quite openly,"I can't manage that."

“If only I were slimmer, more beautiful, richer, more clever, then I would be happier." This is a dream that makes a lot of people ill, depressed, and unhappy.Life has its flaws, defects, corners, and edges.Only those who accept this reality can lead a really full life.
Of course there are activities in which errors are dangerous: driving a car; crossing the road. But life doesn't consist entirely of these things. In among them there is a lot of room for small and large mistakes.
【5】_________
Successful people all have their own places where they can withdraw in order to work.Find out which places improve your creativity. For me it's the train. When I know that I'm going to be traveling for four hours without phone calls and people knocking on my door,I find nay mind is free and I can read or write complex articles. There can be problems working on the train,of course : if the person sitting opposite you keeps talking away,or if train traps make you tired ( some people fall asleep after a few miles).

C. Separate Your Actions
D. Allow Yourself to Be Weak
