railway station. It was quite different from the regular Eng?lish classes we were familiar to, for we had no textbooks, no blackboard or no fixed seats.

Gathering at the entrance of the station, we told to col?lect as many English words and sentences as possible here. Curious and excited? we walked around the station and looked everywhere, search for any information in English. Whenever an English word comes into sight, the class would burst into the cheers as if we had discovered a new world. With the Chi?nese translation and vividly pictures, we could figure out its meaning with ease.

Now, this unforgettable lesson still encourages me to be an active learner where I go.

Maurice Mountain is a retired lawyer in Washington D. C. He developed a prototype(原型)for a device he calls Presto Emergency Boat Ladder. His invention is a small folding lad?der that attaches to the side of a boat to help people who fall into the water. Mr Mountain plans to mass-produce his boat ladder.

He created his invention at a workshop called TechShop. Mr Mountain says, "I think it encourages innovation. 1 think people who probably have had ideas rolling around in the back of their minds for years but have never had the opportunity to actually put them into production or even experiment with them would find this place wonderful.
