A TAXI driver taught me a million dollar lesson in customer satisfaction and expectation. Inspiring speakers charge thousands of dollars to give his kind of training to corporate directors and staff.  It cost me only a $12 taxi ride.
I had flown into Dallas just for the purpose of calling on a client. Time was important and my plan included a quick turn – around trip from and back to the airport. A clean taxi pulled up.
The driver rushed to open the passenger door for me and made sure I was comfortably seated before he closed the door. As be got in the driver’s seat, he mentioned that the neatly folded Wall Street Journal next to me for my use. He then showed me several tapes and asked me what type of music I would enjoy.
Well! I looked around for a “Candid Camera!” Wouldn’t you? I could not believe the service I was receiving! I took the opportunity to say, “Obviously you take great pride in you work. You must have a story to tell.”
“You bet,” he replied, “I used to be in Corporate America. But I got tired of thinking my best would never be good enough. I decided to find my right position in life, somewhere I could feel proud of being the best I could be.
I knew I would never be a rocket scientist, but I love driving cars, being of service and feeling like I have done a full day’s work and done it well. I evaluated my personal property and, I became a taxi driver!
One thing I know for sure, to be good in my business I jus have to meet the expectations of my passengers. But, to be GREAT in my business, I have to EXEED the customer’s expectations! I like the sound of being ‘great’ better than just being ‘a(chǎn)verage’. ”
Did I tip him big time? You bet!

Some years ago I heard Salome Bey sing for the first time. The moment was exciting. Salome’s  36 filled the room and brought the theater to life. I was so  37 that I decided to write an article about her.
I   38 Salome Bey, telling her I was from Essence magazine, and that I wanted to meet her to talk about her career. She  39 and told me to come to her studio next Tuesday. When I hung up, I was scared out of my mind. I   40 I was lying. I was not a writer at all and hadn’t even written a grocery list.
I interviewed Salome Bey the next Tuesday. I sat there  41 , taking notes and asking questions that all began with, “Can you tell me…” I soon realized that  42  Salome Bey was one thing, but writing a story was just impossible. The  43  was almost unbearable. I    44  for days with draft after draft(草稿). Finally I put my article into a large envelope and dropped it into a mailbox.

When I met Mr Jim Lemon I was a seventeen-year-old freshman at Houston's Jackson Junior High. The chances of my finishing high school were  36  . I was a troubled teenage.

When we found him, he was a sorry sight. His clothes were torn, his hands bleeding. Before we reached him, we saw him fall. He lay a moment. Then he pulled himself to his feet, walked unsteadily a few yards through the woods and fell again.
After we got him out, we went back to find the gun that he had thrown down. His tracks showed that for two days he had circled in the forest, within 200 yards of the road. His senses were so dulled by fear and tiredness that he did not hear the cars going by or see the lights at night.
We found him just in time.
This man, like others before him, had simply been frightened when he knew he was lost. What had been a near disaster might have turned out as only a pleasant walk, if he had made a few preparations before he stepped from the highway or off a known path.
Whatever sense of direction that a man may have, it’s still largely a question of observation. A skilled woodsman always keeps an eye on his surroundings. He notes the shape of a mountain, the direction water flows through a swamp, and the way a tree leans across a path. With these in mind, he is still likely to turn around many times, but he is seldom lost.
There are exceptions, of course, and once in a while a man does come across some strange problem that puts him into the “l(fā)ost” situation. A rainstorm or sudden blizzard may catch him without a compass in his pocket. Darkness may find him in a rough area, where travel is dangerous without a light.
When this happens, the normal first reaction is the fear of being laughed at as a result of his poor knowledge in the woods. He may also be concerned about the inconvenience that he will cause his friends when he doesn’t show up. This false pride may lead him to keep on the move in a false effort to find his way against all difficulties.
The person who thinks ahead is seldom in great danger. He’ll be safe if he observes carefully, thinks ahead, and remains calm.
小題1:The writer suggested that if the man had not been found, he would have ______.
A.been shot by a gunB.become confused
C.been attacked by wild animalsD.been in great danger
小題2:According to the text, if a person gets lost in the forest, at the very beginning, he would _____.
A.worry about being laughed atB.push himself to find his way out
C.feel it is convenient to ask for help from his friendsD.feel sorry that he didn’t study hard enough
小題3:When a person tries to find his way in the woods, ________ is the most important.
A.intelligenceB.observationC.directionD.chance
小題4:The writer tells the story of the lost man as an example of people who_______.
A.go into the woods by themselvesB.don’t know how to signal for help properly
C.a(chǎn)re frightened when they think they are lostD.keep their head when they are in trouble

It was about midday. I’d left work early in the morning to cash a cheque. I walked along to the bank, and found that there weren’t too many people about ten or eleven customers in there, which was pretty unusual for those central city banks.
I waited until it was my turn and just went up to the desk and started to talk to the bank clerk. He had a really strange expression on his face -- just sort of blank stare at least I thought he was looking at me and then I realized he was staring over my shoulder.
I began to turn round to see what he was looking at. At the same moment the outside bank guard came flying through the door and lay face down on the floor and following him through the door were three frightening masked men. They were carrying guns; at least I think the one in front was carrying a gun. Whether or not they said anything at that point I can’t remember to this day, or whether people just automatically put their hands up I’ve just no idea.
For a few moments there was just total silence, suddenly broken by the telephone ringing and I remember thinking and wondering who was on the other end of the telephone. Nobody went to answer the telephone, so this thing just kept on ringing and ringing. Then two of the masked men went to the counter, jumped over it and got the cashiers and the bank clerks to start filling the bags with cash. While the two were getting the money, the one at the door who was covering us with the gun was a bit frightened. He started swearing at them, and telling them to hurry up, to get a move on. They jumped back over the counter. One of them slipped as he landed on the floor and fell over and the other two swore at him again. They left through the door. Warning us, “Don’t move, stay like that with your hands up for ten minutes.” And then they just disappeared. Again back to total silence. People put their hands down, I put my hands down but I just stayed exactly where I was.
小題1:What does the writer mean by saying “…a pretty unusual number for those central banks” in the first paragraph?
A.More customers than usual were staying in the bank.
B.Less bank clerks than expected were in the bank.
C.There were often more than a dozen customers in the bank.
D.More banks should be open to serve customers in the city center.
小題2: The bank clerk wore a blank expression on his face probably because ________.
A.he was feeling upset at that moment
B.he felt puzzled and sensed something terrible
C.he was required to keep silence
D.he was threatened with a gun by robbers
小題3:Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A.The customers didn’t wait in line but jumped the queue because of the confusion.
B.All the people in the bank except the writer put their hands up automatically.
C.Nobody answered the phone because all the clerks were busy with work.
D.the bank workers were forced to fill the robbers’ bags with cash.
小題4: What’s the best title of this passage?
A.A Street GangB.A Strange Bank
C.A Bank RobberyD.A Horrible Adventure

Count Me Out
Call me old-fashioned. Call me old. Call me what you want, but refuse to become part of this new Internet world.
I do not possess a computer at home or at the office. Actually, I stopped going to an office 35 years ago, when all communications were done with a pen, a typewriter, or, if the matter was of world-shaking importance, over the telephone. Likewise, if you like something advertised in a newspaper or magazine, you visited the shop selling it at the given address, or you phoned, the number shown. Then you spoke to the fellow and asked for further details.
Tell me what you think of the following ad that appeared the other day in the newspaper. It was for a cure for cancer and this is what it said: “Awareness is the key. Visit spfulford. com at the awareness site.” There was no address or telephone number for the site. So what do unfortunate people without a computer do it they are seeking a cure for their illness?
There are, I am told, certain advantages in having access to the Internet. You can, for example, send love messages across the world or even get married to someone that you meet online. This bit doesn’t interest me; I have been happily married for 60 years. There are, of course, other activities for Internet users besides finding love. They can pay bills, order groceries, or discuss with their doctors.
And this is by no means all. More amazing things are yet to come in the near future. I read a newspaper report recently that quoted Stephen Hawking, an important British scientist. “The complexity of a computer as it exists today is probably less than the brain of an earthworm,” he said. “But, as technology advances, computers will become more complex, and a time may come when the Internet may develop ‘consciousness.’ In other words, the Internet will be able to think, have feelings, and may well be able to act on its own.”
If Professor Hawking is right, I may change my attitude about conjurers. As I grow older each day, I would like one of those that not only thinks for me but also accepts responsibilities for all my mistakes.
小題1:What’s the meaning of the title “Count Me Out”?
A.Get me out of the Internet world.
B.Computers are trying to take control of life.
C.Modern technology pushes old people away.
D.Do not expect me to be a supporter of the Internet.
小題2:According to Paragraph 2, the author thinks computers are         .
A.unnecessaryB.convenientC.expensiveD.a(chǎn)dvanced
小題3:What might the author like about the future computer?
A.Taking blames.B.Curing illnesses.
C.Delivering messages.D.Responding to emotions.
