4.I am an English dictionary.I can still remember the day my ex-owner bought me.He had stood in front of the shelf for around half an hour before finally picking me.Originally,he chose my neighbor.But because she had some ink on the cover,he put her down and chose me instead.
I may sound arrogant (傲慢的).But please forgive me.I am so proud of my vocabulary.With 100,000entries and 300,000examples,I think no scholar can be more knowledgeable than me.My only weakness is that I can't speak.But that is not my fault.I was not designed to speak in the first place.My ex-owner was supposed to read the phonetic symbols (音標(biāo)) clearly printed beside each word,which were also my selling point.I should have been respected but have ended up lying next to a piece of used toilet paper inside the rubbish bin.
It is all because of the electronic dictionary.He is the bad guy because he takes advantage of my one weakness.And I just don't understand why he can be so slim.He also has about 100,000entries but 450,000examples!But I know this was not the reason why my ex-owner was attracted,for he was not a very diligent (勤奮的) student and seldom read the examples listed.The main reason was that the bad guy had so many games in him.My ex-owner always pretended to be working hard while actually he was playing games.
My ex-owner put me on his bookshelf because of my awesome English name"Advanced English Dictionary".He wanted people to think that he was an advanced learner.I wanted to tell him that it would be better if he hid the comic books standing next to me.But,you know,I can't speak.I stood there for years.I was so bored.So I talked to the comic book next to me.Under normal circumstances,I wouldn't have talked to him because I was educated and he was not.But who else could I choose?He told me that my ex-owner had read him once only and then put him there.I was upset because he had never read me from page one to page 1,000.Was I not a better book than the comic book?I wanted to challenge his honesty but before I did so,he was thrown away.
I give up.My pages are absorbing waste water.There is no way people will use me again.Suddenly,I want to talk to the comic book.Would he talk to me if we met?

4.Why does the dictionary think that the electronic dictionary is the"bad guy"?C

4.So many of us hold on to little complaints that may have come from an argument,a misunderstanding,the way we were raised,or some other painful events.Stubbornly,we wait for someone else to reach out to us-believing this is the only way we can forgive or rekindle a friendship or family relationship.
A friend of mine,recently told me that she hadn't spoken to her son in almost three years.She said that she and her son had had a disagreement about his wife and that she wouldn't speak to him again unless he called first.When I suggested that she be the one to reach out,she said,"I can't do that.He's the one who should apologize."After a little gentle encouragement,however,she did decide to be the first one to reach out.To her amazement,her son was grateful for her willingness to call and offered an apology of his own.As is usually the case,when someone takes the chance and reaches out,everyone wins.
Whenever we hold on to our anger,we turn"small stuff"(問題)"into  really"big stuff"in our minds.We start to believe that our positions are more important than our happiness.They are not.If you want to be a more peaceful person you must understand that being right is almost never more important than allowing yourself to be happy.The way to be happy is to let go,and reach out.Let other people be right.This doesn't mean that you're wrong.Everything will be fine.You'll experience the peace of letting go,as well as the joy of letting others be right.
You'11also notice that,as you reach out and let others be"right",they will become less defensive and more loving toward you.They might even reach back.But,if for some reason they don't,that's okay too.You'll have the inner satisfaction of knowing that you have done your part to create a more loving world,and certainly you'll be more peaceful yourself.

29.The underlined word"rekindle"in Paragraph 1probably means"A".
A.recover
B.develop
C.a(chǎn)ccept
D.replace
30.In the author's opinion,we hold on to our anger often because we thinkC.
A.we can turn small issues into big ones
B.our positions are higher than others
C.our own opinions matter most
D.others will be less defensive
31.The best thing to do after a quarrel is toD.
A.let go of our own rights
B.realize that you are wrong.
C.expect others to give in
D.a(chǎn)pologize to others first.
32.What is the main idea of the passage?B
A.People should keep peaceful when facing small stuff.
B.Reaching out and apologizing wins one peace and happiness.
C.We should tell apart small and big stuff in our daily life.
D.It's necessary to enjoy our friendship and family relationship.

Since the 1970s, scientists have been searching for ways to link the brain with computers. Brain-computer interface (界面) (BCI) technology could help people with disabilities send commands to machines.

Recently, two researchers, Jose Milan and Michele Tavella from the Federal Polytechnic schooling Lausanne, Switzerland, demonstrated(展示)a small robotic wheelchair directed by a person's thoughts.

In the laboratory, Tavella operated the wheelchair just by thinking about moving his left or right hand. He could even talk as he watched the vehicle and guided it with his thoughts.

"Our brain has billions of nerve cells. These send signals through the spinal cord(脊髓)to the muscles to give us the ability to move. But spinal cord injuries or other conditions can prevent these weak electrical signals from reaching the muscles," Tavella says.  "Our system allows disabled people to communicate with external world and also to control devices."

The researchers designed a special cap for the user. This head cover picks up the signals from the scalp(頭皮) and sends them to a computer. The computer interprets the signals and commands the motorized wheelchair. The wheelchair also has two cameras that identify objects in its path. They help the computer react to commands from the brain.
Prof. Milan, the team leader, says scientists keep improving the computer software that interprets brain signals and turns them into simple commands. "The practical possibilities that BCI technology offers to disabled people can be grouped in two categories: communication, and controlling devices.  One example is this wheelchair."

He says his team has set two goals. One is testing with real patients, so as to prove that this is a technology they can benefit from. And the other is to guarantee that they can use the technology over long periods of time.

1.BCI is a technology that can _________________.

A. help to update computer systems

B. link the human brain with computers

C. help the disabled to recover

D. control a person's thoughts

2.How did Tavella operate the wheelchair in the laboratory?

A. By controlling his muscles.

B. By talking to the machine.

C. By moving his hand.

D. By using his mind.

3.The team will test with real patients to                         .

A. make profits from them

B. prove the technology useful to them

C. make them live longer

D. learn about their physical condition

4.Which of the following would be the best title for the text?

A. Switzerland, the BCI Research Center

B. New Findings About How the Human Brain Works

C. BCI Could Mean More Freedom for the Disabled

D. Robotic Vehicles Could Help to Cure Brain Injuries

Every time we get behind the wheel of a car, we pt our lives and the lives of others at risk. Self-driving cars are designed to reduce those risks by letting technology control our vehicles.

Accident rates for self-driving cars have been much lower than the rate, for human-driven cars. 1.

As humans, we can make moral choices in avoiding accidents. To avoid hitting a child, for example, human drivers might sharply turn a car away from the child even if others may be injured. 2. Researchers studied this issue. They have developed the Moral Machine website to help explore the choices self-driving cars should make.

3. . You are shown two possible traffic situations and you choose between them. An accident will take place. You choose how many living beings would be hurt or killed.

In one situation there may be a female doctor, a child, two dogs and a homeless person who would be killed. In the other situation, you might have two babies and a cat who would be killed. 4.

The Moral Machine website has many situations and many possible outcomes. When you click on the situation of your choice, it will be highlighted. 5. At the end of the situation, you are shown the results, based on the choices you made. The results show which character you were most likely to save and which character you were most likely to have die.

A. Who should those victims be?

B. Then the next situation appears.

C. You choose who lives and who dies.

D. You can use the Moral Machine to be the judge.

E. But what moral choices can self-driving cars make?

F. The Moral Machine website lets you choose how you would react in a collision.

G. Google’s self-driving car has had only 13 collisions after traveling 1.8 million miles.

B vitamins(維生素)may offer some protection against the effect of air pollution,a new study suggests.

The scientists say the effect is real but stress the limitations of their work.Follow-up studies are urgently needed, they say,in heavily polluted cities like Mexico.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO),over 90% of the world's population live in heavily-polluted areas. The one of the pollutants that is considered the most dangerous is very fine particulate matter, referred to as PM2.5.At around 1/30 the width of a human hair,PM2.5 can go deep into the human lung and contribute to lung and heart health problems in the young and old.

Scientists have long suspected that PM2.5 causes what are termed epigenetic(表觀遺傳)changes in our cells that can damage our health. Now in this new human trial,an international team of scientists wanted to see if exposure to concentrations of PM2.5 could be mitigated by daily B vitamins.

Ten volunteers were tested initially exposed to clean air and their basic responses were measured. The same volunteers were later tested with large doses(劑量)of B vitamins while exposed to air containing high levels of PM2.5.The researchers found that a four-week B vitamin intake limited the PM2.5 effect by between 28-76% at ten gene locations. They found a similar reduction in effect on the mitochondrial DNA,the parts of cells that produce energy.

However, the researchers caution that their study, while observing a real effect, has limitations. As well as the small number of participants, there was little information on the size of the B vitamin dose that caused the response.

1.What is the main idea of the text?

A. B vitamins may fight against PM2.5.

B. PM2.5 can lead to epigenetic changes.

C. Further studies should be done on PM2.5.

D. Exposure to PM2.5 is more and more serious.

2.Which can replace the underlined word "mitigated" in Paragraph 4?

A. measured B. ignored

C. reduced D. observed

3.How many limitations does the text mention about the new study?

A. 2. B. 3.

C. 4. D. 5.

4.How does the writer of the text like the new study?

A. He believes it deeply. B. He criticizes it strongly.

C. He thinks it needs testing again. D. He shows no opinion about it.
