The story of how the song “Happy Birthday to You”came into being, began as a sweet one, which later soured. Two sisters, Mildred Hill, a teacher at the Louisville, Kentucky Experimental Kinder-garten(幼兒園), and Dr Patty Hill, the principal(院長,負(fù)責(zé)人)of the same school, together wrote a song for the children, entitled “Good Morning to All”. When Mildred combined her musical talents with her sister's expertise(專長)in the area of Kin-dergarten Education, “Good Morning to All”was sure to be a success.

The sisters published the song in a collection entitled “Song Stories of the Kindergarten”in 1893. Twenty-one years later, after Dr Patty Hill became the head of the Department of Kindergarten Education at Columbia University's Teacher College, a gentleman by the name of Robert H. Coleman published the song, without the sisters' permission. To add insult(侮辱)to injury, he added a second verse, the familiar “Happy Birthday to You”.

Mr Coleman's addition of the second verse popularized the song and, finally, the sisters' original first verse disappeared. “Happy Birthday to You”, the one and only birthday song, had altogether replaced the sisters' original title, “Good Morning to All”.

After Mildred died in 1916, Patty, together with a third sister named Jessica, took Mr Coleman to court. In court, they proved that they, indeed(確定), owned the melody(曲調(diào)). Because the family legally owns the song, it is entitled to royalties(版稅)from it, whenever it is sung for commercial(商業(yè)的)purposes.

Sometimes we make friends with unexpected people. For example, who would have thought that a spider would make friends with a pig? But in E.B.White’s classic novel “Charlotte Web”, this is exactly what happens.

The pair will appear in a movie at the end of this year.

In the story, Wilbur is an ill-fated(倒霉的)pig.When he is born, he is so small that the farmer decides to end the pig’s life.Fortunately, the farmer’s daughter stops him from killing Wilbur and volunteers to raise the pig in a barnyard.

Wilbur grows day by day and makes many friends in the barnyard, including the spider, Charlotte. However, one day a sheep tells Wilbur that he will be served up as dinner. But Charlotte is determined to save her friend from this danger.By making words such as “famous pig” in her web, she persuades the farmer that Wilbur is some sort of supernatural animal, too important to kill. After Wilbur is saved, Charlotte is so tired that she finally dies.

Unusually, the author makes a spider the heroine of the book.Spiders are normally creatures many people regard with fear.Charlotte does everything in her power to keep Wilbur alive. It shows how a strong friendship can last through the worst possible times.

Dash of Hope

“Dash” is a symbol which represents every day we’ve spent alive on earth. Therefore, how you spend your “dash” is important.

Recently I 36 about a little girl named Hope. After learning more about her life, I couldn’t help but feel it was not by 37 , nor happenstance, that she had been named “Hope”. The strong feeling of sympathy and generosity 38 in her young heart made a lasting impression on me and countless others. 39 I never had the opportunity to meet her, I wish I had. They calculated that they would need to raise more than one 47 dollars in thirty days in order to grant her wish. 48 , but not discouraged, she turned her disappointment into an enthusiasm that inspired caring 49 to take up helping grant the wishes of the other children, and eventually 50 as well. Newspaper columnists and reporters for radio and TV stations 51 the story of this caring young girl who had 52 the hearts of so many and as word spread, the community was challenged. Committees were formed and schools, corporations

and various organizations assisted in 53 money to help make Hope’s dream come true.

Her efforts were not in vain as they continue to help others, not only 54 , but spiritually and emotionally as well. At the gathering to celebrate her life, “A Celebration of Hope” on January 16, 2011, the 55 was made that they had indeed received donations totaling more than one million dollars.
