【題目】Personal computers and the Internet give people new choices about how to spend their time.

Some may use this freedom to share less time with certain friends or family members, but new technology will also let them stay in closer touch with those they care most about. I know this from personal experience.

E-mail makes it easy to work at home, which is where I now spend most weekends and evenings. My working hours aren’t necessarily much shorter than they once were but I spend fewer of them at the office. This lets me share more time with my young daughter than I might have if she’d been born before electronic mail became such a practical tool.

The Internet also makes it easy to share thoughts with a group of friends. Say you do something fun, see a great movie perhaps---and there are four or five friends who might want to hear about it. If you call each one, you may tire of telling the story.

With E-mail, you just write one note about your experience, at your convenience, and address (述說) it to all the friends who you think might be interested. They can read your message when they have time, and read only as much as they want to. They can reply at their convenience, and you can read what they have to say at your convenience.

E-mail is also an inexpensive way to stay in close touch with people who live far away. More than a few parents use E-mail to keep in touch, even daily touch, with their children off at college.

We just have to keep in mind that computers and the Internet offer another way of staying in touch. They don’t take the place of any of the old ways.

1The purpose of this passage is to ______.

A. explain how to use the Internet

B. tell the merits (價值) and usefulness of the Internet

C. describe the writer’s joy of keeping up with the latest technology.

D. introduce the reader to basic knowledge about personal computers and the Internet

2The use of E-mail has made it possible for the writer to ______.

A. spend less time working

B. work at home on weekends

C. have more free time with his child

D. work at a speed comfortable to him

3The best title for this passage is ______.

A. Computer: New Technological Advances

B. Internet: New Tool to Maintain Good Friendship

C. Computers Have Made Life Easier

D. Internet: a Convenient Tool for Communication

【題目】In 1933 an unknown American called Clarence Nash went to see the film-maker Walter Disney. He had an unusual voice and he wanted to work in Disney’s cartoon film for children. When Walter Disney heard Nash’s voice, he said, “Stop! That’s our duck!”

The duck was the now-famous Donald Duck, who first appeared in 1934 in the film, The Wise Little Hen. Donald lived in an old houseboat and worn his sailor jacket and hat. Later that year he became a star after an eight minute Mickey Mouse film. The cinema audiences liked him because he was lazy and greedy, and because he lost his temper very easily. And they loved his voice when he became angry with Mickey’s eight nephews. Soon Donald was more popular than Mickey Mouse himself, probably because he wasn’t a goody-goody, like Mickey.

In the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s, Donald and his friends Mickey, Goofy and Pluto made hundreds of Disney cartoons. He also made educational film about the place of the USA in the world, and safety in the home. Then in 1966 Donald Duck and his voice disappeared—there were no more new cartoons.

Clarence Nash died in February, 1985. But today’s children can still see the old cartoons on the television and hear that famous voice.

【題目】When building houses, people used to think about not only the climate of the areas but also the building materials and the fashions for their houses. However, since electricity became more and more expensive, people began to pay much more attention to the energy they could get for their houses and the new ways they could find to protect their houses from both cold and heat.

Now, houses of an old yet new type have been widely built. In some parts of the world, people share their houses with their livestock(家畜).During cold weather, they gather their cows, goats, or other animals and keep them on the first floor of their houses. The reasons are that the animals can be protected from the cold and that they can help to heat the houses as well. The body heat given off by the animals rises to the second floor of the houses, where people live. By sharing their houses with their livestock, people gain a source of heat.

People who live in or near cities do not usually keep livestock. However, home builders use the fact that heat rises. This natural law can be used in building houses in these areas. Instead of keeping livestock on the first floor, builders fill it with large rocks. As they are open to the sun’s rays during cold weather, these rocks take in heat. They also give off the heat, and, of course, the warm air rises into the living areas of the houses. So these houses are energy-saving.

House-building becomes a great challenge(挑戰(zhàn))to building designers and energy engineers. They try to meet this challenge by learning from old traditions and by using modern technology. And someday in the future, people will be able to live in more energy-saving houses.

1What did people begin to consider as electricity was no longer cheap?

A. The climate of their areas. B. The energy for their houses.

C. The fashions for their houses. D. The building materials for their houses.

2People in some areas gain a source of heat by _________.

A. keeping their livestock downstairs

B. protecting their livestock from the cold

C. sharing their houses only with their cows

D. living on the second floor with their livestock

3The underlined words “natural law” in the third paragraph refer to the fact that ________.

A. heat raises the temperature in the houses

B. heat goes in the upward direction

C. heat goes up if temperature is raised

D. heat increases the temperature of rocks

4From the passage, we can conclude that __________.

A. people will no longer consider building materials in the future

B. energy-saving buildings will become more popular in the future

C. almost all people will move into the houses heated by large rocks

D. energy engineers will devote themselves only to modern technology

【題目】March 21 has been declared World Sleep Day, a time to recognize and celebrate the value of sleep. Many sleep experts hope it will be a wake-up call.

According to a poll (民意調(diào)查)by the National Sleep Foundation, nearly 4 in 5 Americans don’t get as much sleep as they should during the workweek. On average, adults are thought to need at least eight hours of sleep a night, although some can manage with less and some won’t do well without more. But the survey found that, on workdays, only 21% of Americans actually get a full eight hours of sleep, and another 21% get less than six.

To many of us, the thought of spending more time sleeping is, well, a big yawn. On the other hand, the thought of being smarter, thinner, healthier and more cheerful has a certain appeal. And those are just a few of the advantages that can be ours if we consistently get enough sleep, researchers say. Also on the plus side: We’re likely to have better skin, better memories, better judgment, and, oh, yes, longer lives.

“When you lose even one hour of sleep for any reason, it influences your performance the next day,” says Dr. Alon Avidan, director of the UCLA Sleep Disorders Center.

A study published last year found the same to be true even of children. When kids aged 8 to 12 slept for just one hour less for four nights, they didn’t function as well during the day.

But sleeping has an image problem. “We see napping or sleeping as lazy,” says Jennifer Vriend, a clinical psychologist in Ottawa, Canada, and the leading author of the study with children. “We put so much emphasis on diet, nutrition and exercise. Sleep is in the back seat.” In fact, she adds, no matter how much we work out, no matter how well we eat, we can’t be in top physical shape unless we also get plenty of sleep.

【1】The underlined part in Paragraph 1 means _____.

A.to wake up the sleepers

B.to serve as a morning call

C.to draw people’s attention

D.to declare the special day

【2From Paragraph 3 we can infer that _______.

A.being healthier is one of the advantages for us

B.enough sleep is the guarantee of the appealing things

C.sleeping has nothing to do with one’s expectations

D.spending more time on sleeping is a waste of time

【3】What Jennifer Vriend said in the last paragraph implies that _______.

A.people care little about sleeping

B.sleeping is an image problem

C.lazy people tend to sleep long

D.sleeping is only part of our life

【4What is the purpose of the passage?

A.to talk about people’s sleeping problems.

B.to provide an investigation result of sleeping.

C.to stress the function of sleeping at night.

D.to arouse the awareness of enough sleeping.
