Dust storms appear when strong wind blows sand and dirt from a dry surface. Strong dust storms can cause injuries and deaths, so ifs necessary to know what to do when you come across them.

Be careful of dust storm warnings.

Dust storms are most likely to happen on hot summer days, so listen to the local TV or radio before traveling in hot, dry conditions, and consider changing or giving up your trip if dust storms are predicted (預(yù)測(cè)). Roadside signs may also be able to warn you of dust storm danger.

Be prepared.

If you are in an area where storms happen often, carry a mask to keep out dust and dirt from your face, and take eye protection to protect your eyes. A supply of water is also necessary.

Go beyond the storm.

If you see a dust storm from some distance, and you are in a car, you should try to escape from it. Some dust storms can travel at more than 75 miles per hour, but they usually travel much slower. However, it is not advised for you to put yourself in danger by driving at high speed.

Stay inside.

Do not move about in a storm, as you will not be able to see hidden dangers in your way. So if you’re in a house, stay inside.

Protect yourself from flying objects.

Cover as much of your body as possible. A dust storm’s high wind can carry heavy objects. If you find yourself without shelter, try to stay low, close to the ground, and protect your head with your arms or a backpack.

Some dust storms can travel at more than 75 miles per hour, but they usually travel much slower. However, it is not advised for you to put yourself in danger by driving at high speed.

Do not move about in a storm, as you will not be able to see hidden dangers in your way. So if you’re in a house, stay inside.

根據(jù)Be prepared.carry a mask to keep out dust and dirt from your face, and take eye protection to protect your eyes. A supply of water is also necessary.

Some dust storms can travel at more than 75 miles per hour, but they usually travel much slower. However, it is not advised for you to put yourself in danger by driving at high speed. Do not move about in a storm, as you will not be able to see hidden dangers in your way. So if you’re in a house, stay inside. 小題3考查沙塵暴時(shí)哪樣?xùn)|西是不必需的,根據(jù)Be prepared.carry a mask to keep out dust and dirt from your face, and take eye protection to protect your eyes. A supply of water is also necessary.

A. The mistaken belief
B. The need for tolerance
C. Unpunctuality at dinners
D. Punctuality and confidence
E. Self-discipline and punctuality
F. Avoid anxiety by being punctual
1

There is the belief that, if you arrive at an appointment late, you will be considered important. This is a mistaken view. Being unpunctua

l, we are not respectful of others ; we are interfering (擾亂)with another man's time. We must realise that keeping appointments or being punctual is a contract that is silently agreed and we are expected to respect this contract. It is only natural that we lose faith, trust and confidence in a person who is tardy(延遲的).

2.
To be punctual one has to have self-discipline(自律), and the lack of it affects others. A school boy or girl is unpunctual because he or she does not have the necessary human virtue of self-discipline. It is also a mark of disrespect for a system or an institution. Unpunctual people seldom realise that their habit cause problems to others. A salesman who is not punctual may not make a sale if he arrives late for an appointment. If one is late for a job interview, it is not likely that he will get the job.
3.
Being punctual, we can avoid anxiety. Imagine the anxiety if you do not want to be considered unpunctual. You will be anxious if you
set out for a dinner late. The person who sets out late might be careless in driving. He will ignore traffic rules. A traffic jam, flat tyres, etc.
can delay him further. Happy and calm is the man who takes all these possibilities into consideration and arrives at the appointment either
early or on time.
4.
Many of those who attend dinners are notorious (聲名狼藉的)for unpunctuality. They ignore the appointed time and leave their homes only after the fixed time. They are indifferent to the inconvenience caused to others. If the self-centred guest arrives late, the nine others at the table set for ten will have to wait. The host is put in an unpleasant situation and this man seldom thinks of the inconvenience caused to all -the waiters, the management staff, etc. It is necessary for us to think of others and be considerate to them.
5.

However, we cannot always be intolerant (無法容忍的) of tardiness, for ordinary living requires some tolerance. There can be a busy executive who fights to keep to his schedule. Such a person may be forgiven if he is late, but not those who are deliberately late to create impression.

In modern society, punctuality is a necessary virtue. It is a recognition of the importance of other people.

Climate change has caused a rise in sea levels. This has increased the amount of salt in fresh water1(use) on coastal farms. As2 result, farmers are 3(gradual) unable to use fields close to the sea.

However, Marc Van Rijsselberg, a farmer in the Netherlands is now using a4(mix) of sea and fresh water 5(grow) healthy and tasty vegetables.

He teamed up with scientists from the Free University and divided a farm 6eight negated areas. Separate pipes pumped fresh and sea water, and a computer program created water with eight levels of salinity(含鹽度).

The water levels and the levels of salinity were controlled by computerized measuring devices called "sensors". Mr. Van Rijsselberg said he was able to harvest vegetables from most of the eight testing areas. He said the vegetables were smaller than 7grown in fresh water. But he said they also had more sugar and salt, so they tasted much8(good).

He found that potatoes grew better than the other vegetables in the combination of sea and fresh water. Mr. Van Rijsselberg said four kinds of these potatoes would be sent to Pakistan9thousands of hectares of land 10(damage) by salinization (鹽化作用) last year.

A new study has discovered that meditation(冥想)and oxygen sport together reduce depression. The Rutgers University study found that this mind and body combination, done twice a week for only two months, reduced the symptoms for a group of students by 40 percent.
“We are excited by the findings because we saw such a meaningful improvement in both clinically depressed and non-depressed students,” said lead author Dr. Brandon Alderman. “It is the first time that both of these two behavioral ways have been looked at together for dealing with depression.”
Researchers believe the two activities have an interactive effect on combating depression. Alderman and Dr. Tracey Shors discovered that a combination of mental and physical training (MAP) enabled students with major depressive disorder not to let problems or negative thoughts defeat them.
Rutgers researchers say those who participated in the study began with 30 minutes of focused attention meditation followed by 30 minutes of oxygen sport. They were told that if their thoughts drifted to the past or the future they should refocus on their breathing, enabling those with depression to accept moment-to-moment changes in attention.
Shors, who studies the production of new brain cells in the hippocampus—part of the brain involved in memory and learning—says scientists have shown in animal models that oxygen sport exercise keeps a large number of certain cells alive.
The idea for the human intervention(干預(yù))came from her laboratory studies, she says, with the main goal of helping individuals acquire new skills so that they can learn to recover from stressful life events.
By learning to focus their attention and exercise, people who are fighting depression can acquire new learning skills that can help them process information and reduce the overwhelming recollection of memories from the past, Shors says.
“We know these treatments can be practiced over a lifetime and that they will be effective in improving mental health.” said Alderman. “The good news is that this intervention can be practiced by anyone at any time and at no cost.”
(1)What made the research so different?
A.Adopting a way of meaningful talk.
B.Combining the two behavioral ways to treat depression.
C.Treating depression with special medicine.
D.Comparing the depressed with the non-depressed.
(2)The underlined word “combating” in Paragraph 3 can be replaced by ______.
A.fighting
B.identifying
C.distinguishing
D.examining
(3)What did the participants do in the research?
A.They did oxygen sport half an hour before thinking.
B.They thought quietly and then took exercise.
C.They took exercise longer than they thought.
D.They took exercise while thinking quietly.
(4)What is Shors' main purpose of her studies?
A.To find out certain brain cells of humans.
B.To study the production of new brain cells.
C.To offer people a new method to treat stress.
D.To decide the links between stress and exercise.
