“Don't worry if you have problems!” It is easy to say until you are in the midst of a really big one.The only people who don't have troubles are gathered in little neighborhoods. Most communities have at least one.We call them cemeteries. If you're breathing, you have difficulties. It's the way of life. And believe it or not, most of your problems may actually be good for you! Let me explain.

Maybe you have heard the Great Barrier Reef, stretching some 1,800 miles from New Guinea to Australia.Tour guides regularly take visitors to view the reef.

On one tour, a traveler asked the guide an interesting question."I notice that the lagoon (瀉湖) side of the reef looks pale and lifeless, while the ocean side is vibrant and colorful," the traveler observed. Why is this?

The guide gave an interesting answer, "The coral around the lagoon side is in still water, with no challenge for its survival. It dies early. The coral on the ocean side is constantly being tested by wind, waves and storms. It has to fight for its survival every day.As it is challenged and tested, it changes and adapts. It grows healthy. It grows strong. And it reproduces."

Then he added, “That's the way it is with every living organism.”

That's how it is with people.Challenged and tested, we come alive! Like coral pounded by the sea, we grow.Physical demands can cause us to grow stronger.Mental and emotional stress can produce tough-mindedness and resiliency.Spiritual testing can produce strength of character and faithfulness. So, you have problems? No problem! Just tell yourself, "There I grow again!"

Remember: A smooth sea never made a skilled mariner.

It was Thanksgiving morning. I was busy preparing the traditional Thanksgiving turkey when the doorbell rang. I opened the front door and saw two small children in rags huddling together on the top step.

“Any old papers, lady?” asked one of them.

I was busy. I wanted to say “no” until I looked down at their feet. They were wearing thin little sandals, wet with heavy snow.

“Come in and I'll make you a cup of hot cocoa.”

They walked over and sat down at the table. Their wet sandals left marks upon the floor. I served them cocoa and bread to fight against the cold outside. Then I went back to the kitchen and started cooking.

The silence in the front room struck me. I looked in. The girl held the empty cup in her hands, looking at it. The boy asked in a flat voice, “Lady, are you rich?”

“Am I rich? Pity, no!”

I looked at my worn?out slipcovers(椅套). The girl put her cup back in its saucer (碟) carefully and said, “Your cups match your saucers.” They left after that, holding their papers against the wind. They had reminded me that I had so much for which to be grateful.

Plain blue china cups and saucers were only worth five pence. But they matched.

I tasted the potatoes and stirred the meat soup. Potatoes and brown meat soup, a roof over our heads, my man with a regular job, these matched, too.

I moved the chairs back from the fire and cleaned the living room. The muddy marks of little sandals were still wet upon my floor. Let them be for a while, I thought, just in case I should begin to forget how rich I am.

1.Which of the following would be the best title for the text?

A.Lady, are you rich?

B.A story of Thanksgiving Day

C.Don't forget how rich you are

D.Does cups and saucers match well?

2.The writer let the two children come in and served them well because________.

A.she wanted to sell old papers to them

B.she showed great pity and care on them

C.she wanted to invite them to her Thanksgiving party

D.she had the same experience as them in the past

3.Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?

A.The girl thought the writer was rich just because she wanted to make the writer happy.

B.The writer had thought she wasn't rich because her supplies were not expensive.

C.If cups and saucers match well, they are a best pair even though cheap.

D.After hearing what they said, the writer seemed to understand what a rich life was.

4.The writer left the muddy marks of little sandals on the floor for a while to________.

A.show that she was a kind?hearted lady

B.leave room for readers to think about what being rich is

C.remind her that she shouldn't forget how rich she was

D.prove that she had understood what meant being rich

5.It can be inferred from the text that whether you are rich depends on________.

A.how much money you have made

B.what attitude you have had towards life

C.the way you help others

D.your social relationship

Herbie Ricketts,52,lives in Thornton Heath, south London, and works as an electrician. He has been a listening volunteer with the Samaritans for 16 years.

Each caller is as individual as their circumstances and I didn’t realize so many people take their own lives until I became a Samaritan. And only then did the true nature of the work I was doing hit home.

I’ll always remember my first day on duty. The caller, stressed and depressed, told me he was suicidal(想自殺的).He’d been too frightened to talk to the people around him, which is common.People are told they’ve got nothing to be upset about.Or, if they are already classified as having mental health issues,so they tell no one.How do you make sense of your feelings if you can’t tell someone? Just allowing people to say what they honestly feel helps them find a different perspective.I couldn’t offer him practical advice but I could support him emotionally.I helped him come to terms with his situation and make sense of some of the terrible emotions he was experiencing.Offering anonymity(匿名)and being nonjudgmental(無偏見的)allows people easily hurt to explore their thoughts without fear or worry.I left him in an emotionally safe place, ensuring he knew 1 wasn’t rejecting or abandoning him.I let him know we were still there if he needed us,explaining that it might not be me on the other end of the phone but another Samaritan who could also support.

Suicidal people will ring with issues like drug use or loneliness. If you look at it from the perspective of, “How can I solve this? ”you can become, like them,at a loss.Every cell in your body wants to offer solutions, but as a Samaritan I’m not there to sort their problems out.I listen and will support them when they can’t see any further than tomorrow. When the phone goes silent,we stay with that caller as long as we possibly can, which could be two or three hours.

The shifts are up to four hours long. When it doesn’t go so well,I offload to my colleague,so I don’t carry home a heavy heart.Being a Samaritan has greatly improved my life.I’m calmer and become a supportive listener, which has also improved my relationships. But being a wonderful Samaritan doesn’t make you a wonderful parent or wonderful partner—I wish it did.

1.What does the underlined sentence in the passage probably mean?

A.Those who called in had their unique nature.

B.I got to realize the value of being a Samaritan.

C.It was common that many people committed suicide.

D.I was determined to be a Samaritan at home.

2.Some people choose not to tell others about their feelings mainly because they________.

A.a(chǎn)ctually have nothing to worry about

B.a(chǎn)re too shy to expose themselves to others
