【題目】We're so well educated—but we're useless students who have lost the ability to do anything practical. The only thing we've mastered is consumption.

Large numbers of students have entered higher education in the past 10 years, but despite being the most educated generation in history, it seems that we've grown increasingly ignorant when it comes to basic life skills.

Looking back on my first couple of weeks of living in student halls, I consider myself lucky to still be alive. Unfamiliar to fresher's, there are many hidden dangers in the dirty corners of students accommodation.

I have survived a couple of serious boiling egg incidents and lots of cases of food-poisoning, probably from dirty kitchen counters. Although some of my clothes have fallen victim to ironing experimentation, I think I have now finally acquired all the domestic (居家的) skills I missed out in my modern education.

In 2006 and 2010, the charming educationist Sir Ken Robinson gave two very amusing talks in which he discussed the importance of creativity in education. Robinson's main viewpoint is that our current education system dislocates people from their natural talents. I would like to go a step further and propose that besides our talents, the system takes away what used to be passed from generation to generation—a working knowledge of basic life skills.

Today's graduates may have earned themselves honor in history, law or economies, but when it comes to simple things like putting up a shelf to hold all their academic books, or fixing a hole in their on-trend clothes, they have to call for help from a professional handyman or tailor.

Since the invention of the Internet, it has never been easier for people to access information, but our highly specialized education has made us more one-sided than ever.

I suggest that we start with the immediate reintroduction of some of the most vital aspects of "domestic science" education, before the current lack leads to serious accidents in student halls.

【1】People call us useless students for the reason that __________.

A. what we've learned is beyond consumption

B. we are educated generation

C. we've entered higher education

D. our living skills are so poor

【2】Which is NOT the incident the writer had during the first few weeks in student halls?

A. He was seriously burnt by boiled eggs.

B. He was accidentally poisoned by food.

C. He damaged his clothes while ironing.

D. He was severely beaten by freshers.

【3】According to Robinson's opinion, our current education __________.

A. focuses on the importance of creativity

B. dislocates people from their natural talents

C. has equipped students with basic life skills

D. has followed the tradition properly

【4】Why are the graduates poor at basic life skills?

A. Because they are not interested in them.

B. Because they have little relevant practice.

C. Because they are affected by the Internet.

D. Because they are easy to be one-sided.

【5】The main purpose of writing the passage is that __________.

A. there is no need to introduce "domestic science"

B. it's time we did something to current education

C. more attention should be paid to natural science

D. accidents should be prevented in student halls

【題目】(London)—If it really is what’s on the inside that counts, then a lot of thin people might be in trouble.

Some doctors now think that the internal( 內(nèi)部的) fat surrounding important organs like the heart or liver could be as dangerous as the external fat which can be noticed more easily.

“Being thin doesn’t surely mean you are not fat,” said Dr Jimmy Bell at Imperial College. Since 1994, Bell and his team have scanned nearly 800 people with MRI(核磁共振) machines to create “fat maps” showing where people store fat.

According to the result, people who keep their weight through diet rather than exercise are likely to have major deposits (沉積)of internal fat, even if they are slim.

Even people with normal Body Mass Index scores can have surprising levels of fat deposits inside. Of the women, as many as 45 percent of those with normal BMI scores (20 to 25) actually had too high levels of internal fat. Among men, the percentage was nearly 60 percent.

According to Bell, people who are fat on the inside are actually on the edge of being fat. They eat too many fatty and sugary foods, but they are not eating enough to be fat. Scientists believe we naturally store fat around the belly first, but at some point, the body may start storing it elsewhere.

Doctors are unsure about the exact dangers of internal fat, but some think it has something to do with heart disease and diabetes. They want to prove that internal fat damages the body’s communication systems.

The good news is that internal fat can be easily burned off through exercise or even by improving your diet. “If you want to be healthy, there is no short cut. Exercise has to be an important part of your lifestyle,” Bell said.

【1】What is this piece of news mainly about?

A. Thin people may be fat inside.

B. Internal fat is of no importance.

C. Internal fat leads to many diseases.

D. Thin people also have troubles.

【2】Doctors have found _____.

A. the exact dangers of internal fat

B. internal fat is the cause of heart disease and diabetes

C. being slim is not dangerous at all

D. being slim doesn’t mean you are not fat inside

【3】According to the passage, which of the following is WRONG?

A. Exercise can help to reduce the internal fat.

B. People can get rid of internal fat by improving diet.

C. Men are more likely to have too much internal fat.

D. People with heart disease all have internal fat.

【4】From the last paragraph, we can find that _____.

A. whether internal fat can lead to disease has been proved

B. exercise plays an important role in people’s life for keeping healthy

C. thin people usually have internal fat even if they are slim

D. it is easier to burn off internal fat than external fat

【5】The underlined part in the last paragraph means _____.

A. a long road B. an easy way

【題目】B

Banquets are usually held in restaurants in private rooms that have been reserved for the purpose. You will be met at the door and led to the banquet room. Traditionally, the head of your delegation should enter the room first. Do not be surprised if your hosts greet you with a loud round of applause. The proper response is to applaud back.

Seating arrangements are stricter than in the West. Guests should never assume that they may sit where they please and should wait for hosts to guide them to their places. Traditionally, the Chinese regard the right side as the superior and the left side as the inferior. Therefore on formal occasions, the host invariably arranges for the main guests to sit on his right side.

It is the host's responsibility to serve the guests, and at very formal banquets people do not begin to eat until the host has served a portion to the principal guest. Or, the host may simply raise his chopsticks and announce that eating has begun. After this point, one may serve oneself any food in any amount. Remember to go slow on eating. Don't fill yourself up when five courses are left to go. To stop eating in the middle of a banquet is rude, and your host may incorrectly think that something has been done to offend you.

Drinking takes an important place in Chinese banquets. It is likely that the host will stand and hold his glass out with both hands while saying a few words. When he says the words "gan bei", which means bottoms up, all present should drain their glasses. After this initial toast, drinking and toasting are open to all. No words are needed to make a toast, and it is not necessary to drain your glass, although to do so is more respectful. When filling another glass, it is polite to fill it as full as you can. This symbolizes full respect and friendship.

When the last dish is finished, the banquet has officially ended. There is little ceremony involved with its conclusion. The host may ask if you have eaten your fill. Then the principal host will rise, signaling that the banquet has ended. Generally, the principal host will bid good evening to everyone at the door and stay behind to settle the bill with the restaurateur. Other hosts usually accompany guests to their vehicles and remain outside waving until the cars have left the premises.

【1】To attend a formal banquet,you_______.

A.may enter the banquet room directly when you arrive .

B.may stop eating in the middle of the banquet.

C.may help yourself to any food immediately the dishes are served.

D.should applaud back when greeted with a loud round of applause .

【2】What is the host s responsibility in the authors eyes?

A.Announcing that eating ends.

B.Driving guests to their home.

C.Filling the guests glasses.

D.Arranging for guests to go to their place..

【3】We can conclude form the passage that____

A.To stop eating halfway means that the dishes taste bad.

B.Guests should drain their g1ass es the instant they are filled

C.Important guests are arranged to sit on the hosts right side

D.The more you drink , the more you respect the host.

【4】The passage mainly tells us ____

A.Chinese food is delicious.

B.customs and traditions at banquets in China

C.what food guests should eat at banquets
