【7】appeal to

【8】lies in

【9】Only if

【10】inform…of

【11】if necessary…stuck to

【12】make…difference

【13】consists of ; making up

【14】accused of/charged with/sued for ; deliberately

【15】is located ; covering

in translation翻譯的。

It is a terrifying movie. I was terrified by the movie .

故填appeal to

【9】Only if;考查固定句型。根據(jù)后半句的will you acquire(你會獲得)是一個倒裝結(jié)構(gòu),可知前面應(yīng)該用only if (只有)。故填Only if。

inform sb. of sth. 故填inform…of。

【11】if necessary;stuck to;考查常用短語及被動語態(tài)。故填if necessary;stuck to

表示起作用的短語常見的有make a difference ,have an effect 等,因為題目中給了一個a為提示,故填make ... difference。

【13】consists of ; making up;考查短語。表示由組成的常見短語有consist of ,be composed of ,be made up of三個,但是其中只有consist of可用主動形式,例如:This group consists of fifty students. This group is made up of fifty students.故前一空填consists of ;第二空,make up +百分數(shù)+of表示占多少百分比為固定搭配,且因為此處填空前被逗號分開,逗號后面的內(nèi)容應(yīng)該是做Han Ethnic Group的后置定語,且此處構(gòu)成主動關(guān)系,所以應(yīng)用現(xiàn)在分詞做后置定語,故填making up of。

【14】accused of/charged with/sued for ;deliberately;考查短語。根據(jù)填空后的taking是v-ing形式,故前面的動詞短語就要滿足這一點,此處accused of/charged with/sued for三個短語均能表達控告之意,故第一空填accused of/charged with/sued for;第二空應(yīng)填副詞,常用詞匯即deliberately。

【15】is located; covering;根據(jù)填空后的in可知應(yīng)用短語be located in位于,坐落于;第二空因為句子被逗號隔開,因此此處考查的是動詞的非謂語形式,此時China 和cover構(gòu)成主動關(guān)系,故應(yīng)用v-ing形式表主動。故填is located; covering。

You have heard the expression horse sense. As you may imagine, it came from the time when the majority of people traveled in vehicles drawn by horses. A horse does have a lot of common sense, and there are many true stories about horses having saved their drivers from danger of death.

Today for the most part, people travel by train, ship, airplane, and car, but very little by the use of horses. Modern vehicles are propelled by engines, and an engine does not have any sense. In case of danger, many horses could be depended on to help. Not so with the engine; the driver must do all the things.

In recent years, the speed of travel has increased greatly. With the increased speed comes greatly increased danger. The driver of a powerful engine needs to be careful. A moment of being careless may cost a life. In order to drive today, a person must be able to see clearly, and he must learn and follow carefully the rules for safety on the road. Greater attention is the price we pay for using a machine instead of a horse.

【1】The passage mainly talks about ______.

A. engines B. safe driving

C. using horses D. modern machines

【2】The underlined word propel in the second paragraph means ______.

A. repair B. raise C. push forward D. made

【3】It can be inferred from the passage that ______.

A. a driver must know the rules of safety

C. an eye test is an important part of a driver’s examination

D. greater attention is needed for a driver while driving a machine

【4】 Which of the following is NOT true?

A. A driver must be able to see and hear well.

B. The driver of a car must follow the rules of safety.

C. Horses are known to have saved their drivers from injury.

D. It is better for vehicles to be pulled by horse than to be pushed by engine.

Until last spring, Nia Parker and the other kids in her neighborhood went to school on Bus 59.But as fuel prices rose, the school district needed to find a way to cut its transportation costs. So the school’s busing company redrew its route map, canceling Nia’s bus.Now Nia and her neighbors travel the half mile to school via a “walking school bus”—a group of kids, supervised (監(jiān)護) by an adult or two, who make the walk together.

Many parents are delighted to see their kids walking to school, partly because many did so themselves.According to a 1979 survey, nearly half of school kids walked or biked to school, compared with only 16 percent in 2011.Modern parents have been unwilling to let kids walk to school for fear of traffic, crime or simple bullying, but with organized adult supervision, those concerns have reduced.

Schools and busing companies are finding other ways to save.In rural areas where busing is a must, some schools have even chosen four-day school weeks.Busing companies instruct drivers to cancel extra stops from routes and to turn off the engine while idling(掛空擋).They are also using computer software to determine the most fuel-efficient routes, which aren’t always the shortest ones.

There could be disadvantages, however, to the busing cutbacks(削減).If every formerly bused student begins walking to school, it’s an environmental win—but if too many of their parents decide to drive them instead, the carbon footprint can grow.Replacing buses with many more parent-driven cars can also increase safety risks.A 2011 report concluded students are 13 times safer on a school bus than in a passenger car, since buses have fewer accidents and with stand them better due to their size. And some students complain about the long morning hikes, particularly when the route contains a really big hill.

【1】 In regards to walking to school, modern parents seem much concerned with the _____.

A.safety of their kids

B.kids’ physical strength

C.time spent on the way

D.changes in the route

【2】To save money, some schools choose to _____.

A.shorten the school week

B.take the shortest routes

C.stop using school buses

D.use fuel-efficient buses

【3】Busing cutbacks may lead to _____.

A.fewer complaints about long morning hikes

B.more students taking public transportation

C.an increase in carbon dioxide emissions

D.a decrease in the safety of school buses

Part-time jobs for 15 and 16 years olds

Waiter / Waitress

A job as a waiter or waitress is a good choice for 16-year-olds. Not only can one earn $9-$12 an hour, but they can also get the tips (小費). Most people that visit a restaurant don’t just have good food. They come here to relax and have a good time. Besides serving food quickly, a young waiter who talks to them politely with a smile on his face will make the diners enjoy their time at the restaurant.

Work in a library

If one is fond of books, working in a library is another suitable choice. Besides the pay is good, it offers a lot of free time when students can actually sit down and finish their homework. So on returning home, they would have time to hang around with friends or just relax. So working in a library is an excellent part-time job for teens, especially for school students.

Internet jobs

There are many ways of making money through online jobs like clicking on advertisements, visiting sites and signing up with them. However, such online jobs don’t pay well. A better Internet job for teens is to complete online surveys. These are quite simple surveys that usually ask one about his/ her opinions and ideas. Many companies use these ideas to make products designed for teenagers.

【1】 A student who is busy with his research paper will probably choose to work ______.

A. in a restaurant B. in a library

C. on the Internet D. in an IT company

【2】The writer wrote this text to ______.

A. tell us the importance of doing part-time jobs

B. advise teenagers how to choose a part-time job

C. teach young people how to make lots of money

D. introduce his/her experience of doing part-time jobs

【3】 Why do some companies ask the teens to do surveys?

A. The teens have more free time.

B. They can pay less to the teens.

C. They need advice to make products for teens.

D. The teens usually express their true opinions.

Why should I teach my children history? That sounds like a stupid question to even ask. But, as I hear different home schooling teachers discuss history, I get the idea that there may be different reasons for teaching history. Let me briefly explain the three good reasons for studying history and two bad reasons for studying history.

The major reason I see for studying history is that we can learn from the past. I am convinced that the world would be a much better place if more people understood the successes and failures of the past and the things that made these successes and failures. However, as the unfortunately true statement goes "the one thing we seem to learn from history is that we don't seem to learn from history." Perhaps at least in teaching history, to my children I can do a small part in changing this.

The second major reason for studying history is that it is hard to understand the current political climate in the absence of an understanding of its historical context. We can not even understand why we are and where we are without history, much less (更不必說) try to figure out where we are going or how we should get where we want to be.

I teach my children history, for one more reason. I purchased a set of historical audio (錄音機) tapes for our children. My seven-year-old son listened to them over and over. It was my hope that he would become inspired by the accomplishments of people like the Wright brothers to accomplish things by himself. I think that it is good that we celebrate the accomplishments of people like Martin Luther King Jr. if, in doing so, young people are called on to stand for the principles that he stood for and accomplish what he accomplished. I also think that by studying people like Adolph Hitler, people can learn to stand against the things that he stood for.

1In Paragraph 3, the author shows that history is useful because _______________.

A. it makes the current political situation go smoothly

B. it helps us realize the importance of historical events

C. it helps us understand why things are the way they are

D. it helps people accept the present situation where they live

【2】Some historical figures(人物) are mentioned in the last paragraph to show ______________.

A. people can be inspired to do good, while also learning to fight against evil

B. people may also learn from bad historical figures

C. more celebrations should be held to honor their achievements

D. today’s people can also achieve what they achieved

3What would be talked about in the following paragraph?

A. How to teach history effectively.

B. Some negative reasons for studying history.

C. How to get more people to study history.

D. Some bad historical figures.

4The main purpose of this passage is to ____________.

A. inspire the parents to teach their children history

B. show the importance of history in politics

C. explain the reasons why children study history

D. introduce the writer' s own way of teaching history

It was the summer of 1965. Deluca, then 17, visited Peter Buck, a family friend. Buck asked Deluca about his plan for the future. “I’m going to college, but I need a way to pay for it,” Deluca recalls saying. “Buck said, ‘you should open a sandwich shop.’”

That afternoon, they agreed to be partners. And they set a goal: to open 32 stores in ten years. After doing some research, Buck wrote a check for $ 1,000. Deluca rented a storefront (店面) in Connecticut, and when they couldn’t cover their start-up costs, Buck kicked in another $1,000.

But business didn’t go smoothly as they expected. Deluca says, “After six months, we were doing poorly, but we didn’t know how badly, because we didn’t have any financial controls.” All he and Buck knew was that their sales were lower than their costs.

Deluca was managing the store and to the University of Bridgeport at the same time. Buck was working at his day job as a nuclear physicist in New York. They’d meet Monday evenings and brainstorm ideas for keeping the business running. “We convinced ourselves to open a second store. We figured we could tell the public, ‘We are so successful, we are opening a second store.’” And they did — in the spring of 1966. Still, it was a lot of learning by trial and error.

But the partners’ learn-as-you-go approach turned out to be their greatest strength. Every Friday, Deluca would drive around and hand-deliver the checks to pay their supplies. “It probably took me two and a half hours and it wasn’t necessary but as a result, the suppliers got to know me very well, and the personal relationships established really helped out,” Deluca says.

And having a goal was also important. “There are so many problems that can get you down. You just have to keep working toward your goal,” Deluca adds.

Deluca ended up founding Subways Sandwich, the multimillion-dollar restaurant chain.

1Deluca opened the first sandwich shop in order to ________.

A. support his family B. pay for his college education

C. help his partner expand business D. do some research

2Which of the following is true of Buck?

A. He put money into the sandwich business.

B. He was a professor of business administration.

C. He was studying at the University of Bridgeport.

D. He rented a storefront for Deluca.

3What can we learn about their first shop?

A. It stood at an unfavorable place.

B. It lowered the prices to poor management.

C. It made no profits due to poor management.

D. It lacked control over the quality of sandwich.

4They decided to open a second store because they _________.

A. had enough money to do it

B. had succeeded in their business

C. wished to meet the increasing demand of customers

D. wanted to make believe(假裝)that they were successful

5What contributes most to their success according to the author?

A. Learning by trial and error. B. Making friends with supplies.

C. Finding a good partner. D. Opening chain stores.
