Last week I went to visit to my former neighbor, Mr. Yang. He and I used to living next to each other for many years. About half a year ago, the order came that the old building, along with many other similar ones, was going to be pulled down to make rooms for a main street. So I had to move apart. His new apartment is much big than before. The only problem is that it took quite a long time to get to the downtown area. Therefore, Mr. Yang doesn’t seem to worry about the long distance. He says that new subway line is to be built in a few year and he is sure that life will be better in the future.

固定搭配used to do sth過去常常做某事;used to后面接動詞原形。

故the改為an。

故I改為we。

故Therefore改為However

故that后面加a。

第十處:year改為years;考查名詞單復(fù)數(shù)。根據(jù)前面的a few,可知此處應(yīng)使用year的復(fù)數(shù)形式。故year改為years。

Earth Day at 40: What Good Is It Now?

After 40 years, outsourced activism is replacing traditional Earth Day activities, and green’s gone mainstream, experts say. So what’s the point?

【1】Where did this most popular day for couples come from? And how does it come into beings, year after year? Noel Lenski, professor of the University of Colorado, said the lovers’ holiday traces its roots to raucous annual Roman festivals held every year on February 15 and remained wildly popular well into the fifth century A.D.

【2】The first Earth Day in 1970 was a raucous, radical teach-in that helped spur clean-air, clean-water, and endangered species legislation in the United States. Now, 40 years later, Earth Day is every day, as the saying goes. The thing is, it’s also everyday- environmentalism that has become a routine with greenness as much a marketing tactic as a moral pursuit.

【3】 Some 242 million turkeys were raised in the U.S. in 2010 for slaughter, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Last year’s birds were worth about U.S. $3.6 billion. Before the big dinner, debunk the myths, we need to know that the first “real” U.S. Thanksgiving wasn’t until the 1800s and get to the roots of Thanksgiving 2010.

【4】Father’s Day traditionally takes a backseat to Mother’s Day, and, for the most part, dads are cool with that, experts say. Nevertheless, as traditional roles around the house gradually change, fathers are gaining more attention on their special day, at least as measured in the monetary value of gifts estimated to be given on June 19, 2011, when the holiday will be celebrated in dozens of countries.

【5】Cookouts, fireworks, and, of course, a chance to wish Uncle Sam a big “happy birthday” —the day means summer in full swing across the United States and beyond. Besides the founders of the US, Fireworks, first authorized by Congress in 1777, are another legacy. More than 14,000 fireworks displays light up U.S. skies each year.

Forgiveness

When someone has deeply hurt you, it can be extremely difficult to let go of your hate. However, forgiveness is possible, and it can be surprisingly beneficial to your physical and mental health. People who forgive show less sadness, anger and stress and more hopefulness.

【1】 Try the following steps:

Calm yourself. 【2】 You can take a couple of breaths and think of something that gives you pleasure: a beautiful scene in nature, or someone you love.

Don’t wait for an apology. Many times the person who hurt you does not intend to apologize. They may have wanted to hurt you or they just don’t see things the same way. 【3】 Keep in mind that forgiveness does not necessarily mean becoming friends again with the person who upset you.

Take the control away from your offender (冒犯者). Rethinking about your hurt gives power to the person who caused you pain. Instead of focusing on your wounded feelings, learn to look for the love, beauty and kindness around you.

【4】 If you understand your offender, you may realize that he or she was acting out of unawareness, fear, and even love. You may want to write a letter to yourself from your offender’s point of view.

Don’t forget to forgive yourself. 【5】 But it can rob you of your self-confidence if you don’t do it.

A. How should you start to forgive?

B. Why should you forgive?

C. Try /span>to see things from your offender’s angle.

D. Recognize the benefits of forgiveness.

E. For some people, forgiving themselves is the biggest challenge.

F. If you wait for people to apologize, you could be waiting an awfully long time.

G. To make your anger die away, try a simple stress-management technique.

Dear David,

Sorry to learn that you’ve put on weight. Eat too much food in McDonald’s and KFC must be the reason, I guess.

You have to realize that food is not always as healthy as was said in the advertisements. If you know much about them, we will find fried chicken and French fries are rich in fat, sugar and salt. They can make you to gain weight and become sick.

That you ought to have every day are noodles, rice, fruit and vegetables rather than the junk food. Energy-giving food, body-building food and protective food makes up a balanced diet. In word, you must have an idea of how a healthy diet should be and stick to it.

I hope my advices can help you improve your health.

Yours,

Li Ming
