I came to live here where I am now between Wounded Knee Greek and Grass Greek. Others.
came too,and we made these little grey houses of logs that you see, and they are square. It is a bad
way to live , for there can be no power in a square.
You have noticed that everything an Indian does is in a circle. and that is because the Power of the
World always works in circles. and everything tries to be round. In the old days when we were a strong
and happy people, all our power came to us from the respectful circle of the nation, and so long as the
circle was unbroken, the people were getting rich. The flowering tree was the living center of the circle,
and the circle of the four quarters nursed it. The east gave peace and light, the south gave warmth. the
west gave rain, and the north with its cold and strong wind gave strength and continuous power. This
knowledge came to us from the outer world with our brief. Everything the Power of the World does is
done in a circle. The sky is round , and I have heard that the earth is round like a ball ,and so are all the
stars. Birds make their nests in circles .for theirs are the same as ours. The sun comes forth and goes
down again in a circle. The moon does the same , and both are round. Even the seasons form a great
circle in their changing, and always come back again to where they were. The life of a man is a circle
from childhood to childhood, and so it is in everything where power moves. Our places were like the
nests of birds , and these were always set in a circle , the nation's circle , a nest of many nests.where
the Great Spirit meant for us to nurse our children.
But the Wasichus ( Indian word for " white people" )  have put us in these square boxes. Our
power is gone and we are dying , for the power is not in us any more. You can look at our boys and
see how it is with us. Where we were living by the power of the circle in the way we should, boys
were men at twelve or thirteen years of age. But now it takes them very much longer to be bull-grown.

I was 13 years old.  My family had moved to Southern California from North Florida a year before.
I hit adolescence with a vengeance.  I was angry and rebellious, with little regard for anything my parents
had to say, particularly if it had to do with me.  Like so many teenagers, I struggled to escape from
anything that didn't agree with my picture of the world
. A "brilliant without need of guidance" kid, I
rejected any overt offering of love.  In fact, I got angry at the mention of the word love.
One night, after a particularly difficult day, I _____________, shut the door and got into bed.  As I
lay down in the privacy of my bed, my hands slipped under my pillow.  There was an envelope.  I pulled
it out and on the envelope it said, "To read when you're alone."
Since I was alone, no one would know whether I read it or not, so I opened it.  It said "Mike, I know
life is hard right now, I know you are frustrated and I know we don't do everything right.  I also know
that I love you completely and nothing you do or say will ever change that.  I am here for you if you ever
need to talk, and if you don't, that's okay.  Just know that no matter where you go or what you do in your
life, I will always love you and be proud that you are my son.  I'm here for you and I love you - that will
never change.  Love, Mom.
That was the first of several "To read when you're alone" letters.  They were never mentioned until I was
an adult.
Today I travel the world helping people.  I was in Sarasota, Florida, teaching a seminar when, at the end
of the day, a lady came up to me and shared the difficulty she was having with her son.  We walked out
to the beach, and I told her of my mom's undying love and about the "To read when you're alone" letters.  Several weeks later, I got a card that said she had written her first letter and left it for her son.
That night as I went to bed, I put my hands under my pillow and remembered the relief I felt every
time I got a letter.  In the midst of my turbulent teen years, the letters were the calm assurance that I
could be loved in spite of me, not because of me.  Just before I fell asleep I thanked God that my mom
knew what I, an angry teenager, needed.  Today when the seas of life get stormy, I know that just under
my pillow there is that calm assurance that love - consistent, abiding, unconditional love - changes lives.

3.  The best phrase for the blank may be _____________

A. I went into my door

I paid a visit to Cambridge last January.  Though the trip took me 5 hours and it rained the whole day
with strong winds there, the town deserved a visit.
The bus started at 6:10 a. m. It stopped at 4 airports before we finally arrived, which wasted more
time than we expected. Tired with long sitting, one passenger stood up to relax his numbed legs. The
driver asked him to sit down but in vain. So he pulled up and said seriously, "Either you get off or sit
down. "To him, safety is the first policy.
Cambridge consists of nearly thirty colleges.  The oldest part of the university was built in the 13th
century while the newest was founded in the mid 1960s. The number of the students is so great that many
students live in lodgings(出租房)and move into college for their final year.
Cambridge is called a university town because there is no clear separation between the university
buildings and the rest of the city. The university is not just one part of the town; it is all over the town. The
heart of Cambridge has shops, pubs, and supermarkets, but most of it is university-colleges, departments,
libraries, clubs and other places for university staff and students. Students fill the shops, cafes, banks and
churches, making these as well part of the university.
With over 10, 000 undergraduates and postgraduates, the town is a busy place indeed. Students here
are not allowed to keep cars. If you happen to be walking in the street during a break, better stop a
moment to avoid the boiling sea of bicycles hurrying in all directions, carrying students from one college or
lecture room to another.

1. The writer believed that the trip took more time because of________

A. bad weather
B. unexpected stops of the bus
C. one passenger
D. an accident on the way

2. Why is Cambridge called a university town?

A. It has 10, 000 undergraduates and postgraduates.
B. There are nearly thirty colleges in the town.
C. All the students and staff live in the town.
D. The university and town are fully combined.

3. It can be inferred that most Cambridge students take________as their first means of transport.

A. boats
B. cars
C. bicycles
D. buses

I suppose that having been brought up in the countryside and close  to animals,it wasn't remarkable
(不平常的)when I decided  to become a vet(獸醫(yī)). Luckily I was also good at all the necessary science
subjects. So after the college entrance examination I found myself at a veterinary college, training to look
after animals in all kinds of situations. I hoped that I would be able to work in the research field so that I
could find cures for animal diseases.
Much to my surprise,I found public health care was a very important aspect of my course. This is an
area of animal medicine where a vet's work has many things in common with the work of a doctor of
human diseases. I particularly liked it because I recognized that the study of animal diseases can help
human medicine. As we know, many infectious diseases come from animals-including SARS and bird flu.
Some of the infections have only been understood after carefully analytical work in labs by animal doctors. They helped identify the animal source for diseases such as SARS. They were also the first to identify
various kinds of viruses. Sometimes vets are also able to suggest a cure for human illnesses. When I found this out I was determined to make public health medicine my chosen career.
After graduation,I applied for a job in public health. Soon I found myself concerned with the problem
of bird flu. This is  an illness that attacks birds, but humans can catch the disease  if they are in close
contact with infected birds. Though the job  is dangerous,it makes me proud that vets and other animal
disease researchers are in the front line helping to fight these  unknown human diseases.

A. it was both important and interesting
B. it could help him connect many human diseases with animals
C. it made a vet's work very much like a doctor's
D. it could help human medicine by studying animal diseases

3. What can be followed if this passage continues?

A. The writer's happy family life.
B. How the writer did research work in studying bird flu.
C. How the writer dealt with the relationship with other workmates.
D. What difficulty the writer met in the research work.

4. Which of the following is implied in the passage?

A. Animals with infectious diseases should be killed.
B. Keeping animals is dangerous to humans.

A. Being a vet is helpful to both animals and humans.
B. Vets can cure both animals and humans.
