Some people often complain about their poor memory. Actually there are several ways to keep your memory sharp. This article will show you some simple tips.

1. When you say these things, you begin to plant the thought in your mind and it may become true. Tell yourself you can remember anything as long as you put your mind to the task. You will see an improvement in your memory.

2. If you have trouble remembering phone numbers or other blocks of numbers, it can be really helpful to try this method. If you remember them in smaller groups, like two or three digits(數(shù)字), it will also be much easier to remember the number.

Be sure to see a doctor if you really are losing your memory. A poor memory can be a sign that you are in low spirits. 3.

Playing games also helps improve your memory. Any type of games that involves(涉及) remembering things is wonderful. 4. Try and remember it when you have nothing better to do. A useful tip for anyone interested in games is to often work on solving word puzzles and similar types of games. 5. How could we tell time if there were no watches or clocks anywhere in the world?

The sun was probably the world’s first “clock”, except in the far north, where the Eskimos(愛(ài)斯基摩人) live. There it’s dark most of the winter, and light most of the summer. But in most of the world, people have used the sun for a clock. Even today if you don’t have a clock that shows time, you still know that when the sun shines, it’s day; and when it’s dark, it’s night. The sun can not only tell you whether it’s day or night but also it’s morning, noon, or afternoon. When the sun is almost directly overhead, it’s noon.

People who live near the sea can tell time from the tides. In the daytime, for about six hours, the water rises higher and higher on the beach. And then it goes down and down for another six hours. The same thing happens again at night. There are two high tides and two low tides every 24 hours.

Seamen on a ship learn how to tell time by looking at the moon and the stars .The whole sky is their clock.

In some places in the world the wind comes up at about the same time every day or changes direction or stops blowing. In these places, the wind can be the clock.

A sand clock is an even better clock. If you had fine dry sand in a glass shaped like the one in the picture above, you would have what is called an hourglass. The sand in the hourglass goes from the top part to the bottom part in exactly one hour. When the hourglass it turned over, the sand will take another hour to go back again.

1.The Eskimos in the far north can’t use the sun for a clock because ______.

A. they know very little about the sun

B. the sun there never goes down in winter.

C. it’s too cold for them to go out to watch the sun

D. there are long dark winters and long light summers in the far north

2.The underlined word “tides” in paragraph 3 means ___________.

A. ocean current

B. storm

C. a regular rise and fall of the sea

D. wave

Shyness equals losing opportunities, less pleasure and fewer social connections, but there are ways to make it a thing of the past.

When I was fifteen, I was shy. I remember an attractive girl trying to talk with me. My shyness made me focus on me instead of her. I heard my own voice but not hers and I thought about what I was trying to say instead of what she was trying to say.

To overcome shyness you need to learn to relax. This gives you the space to practice certain conversational skills. Relaxed socializing (社交) is so pleasurable. To start reducing your own shyness, I want you to absorb the following tips and ideas and start to put them into practice.

Focus your attention away from yourself. Notice what other people are wearing and make a mental note, listen to their conversation, imagine where they might live, and make a point of remembering names. Not only does this give you more to talk about, it also reduces social anxiety, leaving you feeling calmer.

Ask people open questions. Many people like to talk about themselves and will find you interesting if you find them interesting. Ask questions that require more than a “yes” or “no” response such as “What do you like about this place?’ rather than “Do you like this place?” Once they have answered, you can use add-on (追加) questions connected with the first such as “What other places do you like in this city?” Next you can express your views. This is a great way to get the conversation going.

Now I love meeting new people and suspect that my current social confidence would be unrecognizable to my fifteen-year-old self.

B. Do you like playing basketball?

C. Do you think he will pass the exam?

D. Why do you find that English is hard to learn?
