16.The Pacific island nation of Nauru used to be a beautiful place.Now it is an ecological disaster area.Nauru's heartbreaking story could have one good consequence-other countries might learn from its mistakes.
For thousands of years,Polynesian people lived in the remote island of Nauru,far from western civilization.The first European to arrive was John Fearn in 1798.He was the British captain of the Hunter,a whaling ship.He called the island Pleasant Island.
However,because it was very remote,Nauru had little communication with Europeans at first.The whaling ships and other traders began to visit,bringing guns and alcohol.These elements destroyed the social balance of the twelve family groups on the island.A ten-year civil war started,which reduced the population from 1,400to 900.
Nauru's real troubles began in 1899when a British mining company discovered phosphate(磷酸鹽)on the island.In fact,it found that the island of Nauru was nearly all phosphate,which was a very important fertilizer for farming.The company began mining the phosphate.
A phosphate mine is not a hole in the ground; it is a strip mine.When a company strip-mines,it Comremoves the top layer of soil.Then it takes away the material it wants.Strip mining totally destroys the land.Gradually,the lovely island of Nauru started to look like the moon.
In 1968,Nauru became one of the richest countries in the world.Every year the government received millions and millions of dollars for its phosphate.
Unfortunately,the leaders invested the money unwisely and lost millions of dollars.In addition,they used millions more dollars for personal expenses.Soon people realized that they had a terrible problem-their phosphate was running out.Ninety percent of their island was destroyed and they had nothing.By 2000,Nauru was financially ruined.Experts say that it would take approximately$433,600,000and more than 20years to repair the island.This will probably never happen.

32.What was Nauru like before the Europeans came?C
A.rich and powerful        B.modern and open

B.It spent too much repairing the island.
C.Its phosphate mining cost much money.

A.The leaders will take the experts'words seriously.
B.The phosphate mines were destroyed.
C.The island was abandoned by the Nauruans.
D.The ecological damage is difficult to repair.

1.The towers, called the Bosco Verticale, are under construction in Milan.Towering over the city skyline, these are the world'S first forest in the sky apartments.
With trees equal to 10,000 square meters of forest covering 27 floors, the twin towers will be home to an astonishing 730 trees,5,000 bushes and 11,000 ground plants.
Michele Brunello, director of Boeri Studios, explained,"The idea of a vertical forest came when we were involved in a local tree planting project. We imagined the building that allowed the landscape(景觀)to enter it."
Brunello'S concept is designed to save on land, which is a precious resource in the centre of a major city."We can provide the quality of life of expensive housing without consuming the resources that conventional housing would demand."he said.
Bosco Verticale has been designed as a home to a variety of plants, which planners hope will act as a filter(過(guò)濾器)to pollution from traffic, shade people from the sun and will change its appearance each season.
"People live with the trees but they don't own them-they are communal,"said Brunello."All the plants have been picked by the designers to be suitable to the height and correct side of the building. So the people aren't just choosing an apartment based on the size and view, but also they need to consider which trees and plants they will be living with."
Safety is also a major factor. If a tree Was blown down in the wind from a great height, this could be a huge problem. So we tested various trees to make sure we had the right ones.
When the sky forest is completed by the end of 2012,the structure will house the same amount of people as 50,000 square meters of conventional urban area. What'S more,it will be home to insects, birds and animals that usually live in the parks of Milan.

5.Erica David lives in Pinedale,Wyoming,USA,where winter can bring temperatures of below 35degrees Fahrenheit,howling winds,and a lot of snow.So it was just natural that she chose to study snow for her school science fair in the sixth grade.
Now a junior in high school,Erica is in her sixth year of snow experiments, and is well on her way to becoming a snow expert. She started with a basic question:Could snow fences be built to work better?
Snow fences are used to keep snowdrifts(雪堆)from covering areas like roads of train tracks,or to help build up snow where it can help with water shortages in spring when it melts(融化)."Also,I wanted to protect my animals better from blowing snow,"says Erica,who raises goats,sheep,and pigs.
Before she could test fence designs,Erica had to figure out what would act like real snow in her experiments."I tested flour,sugar,and salt before I settled on dishwasher powder,"she explains.
Science fairs offer students the chance to test theories,present findings to judges,and meet other researchers.Erica's many achievements include competing at the Discovery Channel Young Scientist Challenge for middle school students and the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair,where students from around the world present their science research.
But perhaps the best reward is that her research is already being put to good use.She has come up with an improved snow fence design,and this year she's helping think out how to provide water supply to native plants,which have been killed off by drilling at nearby natural gasfields.
"Science fairs are an amazing experience,"says Erica."Just pick your true feeling and go for it."
