A recent study, while showing a generally positive attitude toward science, also suggests a widespread worry that it may be “running out of control”.This idea is dangerous.

Science can be a force for evil as well as for good. Its applications can be channeled either way, depending on our decisions. The decisions we make, personally or collectively, will determine the outcomes of science. But here is a real danger.Science is advancing so fast is so strongly influenced by businesses that we are likely to believe whatever decisions we come to will make little difference. And, rather than fighting for the best possible policies, we may step back and do nothing.

Some people go even further. They say that despite the moral and legal objections (反對), whatever is scientifically possible will be done ——somewhere, sometime. They believe that science will get out of control in the end. This belief is dangerous too, because it a fuels sense of hopelessness and discourages them from making efforts to build a safer world.

In our interconnected world, the lack of agreement in and of the world of science can lead to the failure to control the use of science.Without a common understanding, the challenges of “controlling” science in this century will be really tough.Take human cloning for example.Despite the general agreement among scientists on its possible huge impact (影響) on traditional moral values, some countries still go ahead with the research and development of its related techniques. The outcomes are hard to predict.

Therefore, discussions on how science is applied should be extended far beyond scientific societies.Only through the united efforts of people with hope, can we be fully safe against the misuse of science and can science best serve mankind in the future.

What can we conclude from the recent study?

       A.People think highly of science.

B.People hold mixed opinions about science.

C.Science is getting dangerously out of control.

D.Science is used for both good and bad purposes.

According to the passage, what will happen if we hold that science is getting beyond control?

A.The development of science will hopelessly slow down.

B.Businesses will have even greater influence on science.

C.The public will lose faith in bringing about a bright future.

D.People will work more actively to put science under control.

The discussion should reach beyond scientific societies because __________.

A.scientists have failed to predict the outcomes

B.the ties between different areas need strengthening

C.united efforts are necessary for the development of science

D.people need to work together to prevent the bad use of science

What is the main idea of the passage?

A.Science and its applications bring us many dangers.

B.The development of science mostly lies in people’s attitudes.

C.Mankind can largely take control of science with their efforts.

D.The future of science will be influenced by the dangerous ideas.

A few days ago, I went to school with lots of books, hoping to get a locker (鎖柜). Suddenly, it started raining heavily. I hurried to pay for my locker, but I was disappointed when they informed me they only accepted cash. I was $ 7.00 short, which meant I had to carry the books back home. It would be an exhausting (令人精疲力竭的) two-hour journey back home with all those books.
An elderly gentleman nearby noticed my problem. He asked how much cash I needed. When I told him I was $7 short, he quickly took out the money from his wallet .“You don’t have to pay me back ,”he said. I was speechless; I didn't know whether to take the money or come back with the books the next day. A young student who was working there noticed my hesitation. “He’s really nice ,”said the student. I was starving this morning and he bought breakfast for me. He always helps people in different ways.
The next day, I went to him and thanked him for trusting me and lending me the money. He said he forgot about it and didn't expect I would give it back. “I’m very happy,” he said,“not because I’m getting my money back, but because this is the right way to go---whatever you get from this world, give it back as much as you possibly can. Spread kindness around the world with the smallest things you can do.”
Later, I found out he wasn’t involved with any charity(慈善)organizations. He has been performing these types of acts for years. Earlier, someone had done something incredibly kind for him and he has been spreading the kindness ever since.
He taught me a very important lesson in life. We come to this world with nothing and we will leave with nothing. Whatever we own, it will become somebody else’s and whatever we leave, it will become somebody else’s.

第二節(jié):讀寫任務(wù)(共1小題,滿分25分)
閱讀下面短文,然后按照要求寫一篇150字左右的英語短文。
Life is filled with challenges. As we get older we come to realize that those challenges are the very things that shape us and make us who we are, it is the same with the challenges that come with friendship.
When we are faced with a challenge, we usually have two choices: we can try to beat if off, or we can decide that the thing presenting the challenges isn’t worth the trouble and call it quits. Although there are certainly times when calling it quits is the right thing to do, in most cases all that is needed is commitment and communication.
When we are committed to something, it means that no matter how painful or how uncomfortable something is, we will always choose to face it and work through instead of running away from it. Communication is making a space for discussion and talking about how you feel as opposed to just saying what the other person did wrong. If you can say to a friend, “I got my feelings hurt.” rather than “You hurt my feelings.” You are going to be able to solve the problem much faster.
In dealing with many challenges that friendship will bring to you, try to see them for what they are: small hurdles you need to jump or get through on your way through life. Nothing is so big that it is impossible to get over, and hurt only serves to make us stronger. It’s all part of growing up. It happens to everyone, and some day you will look back on all of this and say, “Hard as it was, it made me who I am today. And that’s a good thing.”

科目:高中英語 來源:2010年江西省新余市高一上學(xué)期期中考試英語卷 題型:閱讀理解

When we can see well, we do not think about our eyes often. It is only when we can not see perfectly that we come to see how important our eyes are.

People who are nearsighted can only see things that are very close to their eyes. Many people who do a lot of close work, such as writing and reading, become nearsighted. Then they have to wear glasses in order to see distant things clearly.

People who are farsighted face just the opposite problem. They can see things that are far away, but they have difficulty reading a book unless they hold it at arm’s length. If they want to do much reading, they must get glasses too.

Other people do not see clearly because their eyes are not exactly the right shape. This, too, can be corrected by glasses. Some people’s eyes become cloudy because of cataracts. Long ago these people often became blind. Now, however, it is possible to operate on the cataracts and remove them.

When night falls, colors become fainter to the eyes and finally disappear. After your eyes have grown used to the dark, you can see better if you use the side of your eyes rather than the centers. Sometimes, after dark, you see a small thing to one side of you, which seems to disappear if you turn your head in its direction. This is because when you turn your head, you are looking? at the thing too directly. Men on guard duty sometimes think they see something moving to one side of them. When they turn to look straight at it, they can not see it any more, and they believe they were mistaken. However, this mistake happens because the center of the eye, which is very sensitive in daylight, is not as sensitive as the sides of the eye after dark.

1.We don’t know that our eyes are of great importance until ________.

A. we think about our eyes      B. we cannot see clearly

C. we wear glasses               D. we have to do much reading

2.According to the passage, a ________ is more likely to be nearsighted.

A. tailor   B. doctor    C. guard    D. painter

3.People who are farsighted ________ .

A. cannot do a lot of close work without glasses

B. can only see things that are very close to their eyes

C. have difficulty reading a book if they hold it at arm’s length

D. have the same problem as the nearsighted people

4.To see a small thing at night, it is better to look ________ .

A. with wide open eyes         B. with half shut or narrowed eyes

C. straight at it                    D. in a slightly different direction
