Welcome to our third newsletter of the year!
Our major activity for March is our Walk for the Woods fundraising event on Saturday, 17th March, starting any time between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. We will be walking the distance between Warley Woods and Tipperary. It is indeed a long way—80 miles. The more people that you can get to sponsor you, the more money we can raise to help look after our beautiful woodland. More information is available on our website.
The Sunday volunteers planted two beeches and an oak last week. This was thanks to the money from the Big Tree Plant and to Lisa and Gordon Whitaker, whose friends gave money for the big trees instead of for their wedding presents. Thanks to everyone who took part.
There were 15 volunteers at the Oral History Training Day which was led very ably by Julia Letts. The group will be meeting again and will start to interview the local people who have offered to tell their stories. We are happy to hear from others who would like to be interviewed about their memories of the Woods for the project. If you or anyone you know is interested, please call Viv Cole at the office. This project is financed by Heritage Lottery Fund.
There was a huge response to the Forest Schools activities held at half term. These will be held again during the Easter holidays on the following dates: 4th April from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for over 8s. On 12th April from 10 a. m. to 12 noon, there will be a Teddy Bears' Picnic for the under 8s. All these must be booked in advance.
Finally, don't forget the Easter Egg Roll on Bank Holiday, 9th April, starting at 11 a.m. Bring your own hard-boiled and decorated egg to roll down the hill in the woods. The first past the finishing line will win a large chocolate egg! This year, due to popular demand, there will also be an Adults' Easter Egg Roll following the children's competition.
We look forward to seeing you all soon, at one of our many events!

There are many fun, free activities that you can do as a family. All that is required is a bit of imagination and some time set aside for fun. And the best part is that these are the kind of memories a child will remember for a lifetime.
Family game night
Find out any of the games that are already around the house. Kids often get computer games for Christmas or birthdays, and would love to have a chance to play with their family. Or, make up some games of your own. “Charades” is a fun game to play that will challenge a child to use his/her imagination. Divide the family into teams and let each team come up with words that the other has to act out.
Family art time
Pick some time for the family to sit down and come up with their own masterpiece. It doesn't need to be just a drawing -- take some old magazines sitting around the house, let the kids cut out pictures and paste them into their own montage. Or, use items from nature. Let them use leaves, pine cones, twigs and whatever else they can find to create something from their imaginations.
Family Picnic
Taking the family for a picnic is a great way for some fun that doesn't cost any money. If the weather is nice, take them to a park or playground and let the kids have a day of playing. Or, if it is the middle of winter and a foot of snow is on the ground, set up a picnic in the living room.
Family Field Trip
A family field trip doesn't have to cost a dime. Ask a nearby farm if it would be alright to bring your kids out for a tour and to see some of the animals. Or take them to a park and make a scavenger hunt where they need to find certain items from nature. Ask a local business if you could bring the family for a tour to see how things work -- you might be surprised at the number of people who would be thrilled to share what they do with others, and it could be an interesting lesson for the kids.
(1)We can learn from the passage that “charades” ________.
A.is a computer game
B.is too difficult for children
C.involves acting out words
D.should be played by more than four people
(2)According to the passage, the family picnic____________.
A.should be held in the middle of winter
B.can be held inside your house
C.will be very meaningful if held in offices
D.will cost much money if held on a farm
(3)Who might be most interested in this passage? _________.
A.Parents
B.Teachers
C.Kids
D.People in general

【題目】閱讀理解。
Obama, Lady Gaga and Steve Jobs—what do they have in common? They are, of course, all Americans. And according to a survey by social networking site baidu. com, they all best illustrate(舉例說明) the word “cool”.
But just what does it mean to say someone is “cool”? Most would answer that it is something to do with being independent-minded and not following the crowd.
Yale University art professor Robert Farris Thompson says that the term “cool” goes back to 15th century West African philosophy. “Cool” relates to ideas of grace under pressure.
“In Africa, ” he writes, “coolness is a positive quality which combines calmness, silence, and life.”
The modern idea of “cool” developed largely in the US in the period after World War II. “Post-war ‘cool' was in part an expression of war-weariness (厭戰(zhàn)情緒), ... it went against the strict social rules of the time,” write sociologists Dick Pountain and David Robins in Cool Rules: Anatomy of an Attitude.
But it was the American actor James Dean who became the symbol for “cool” in the hugely successful 1955 movie Rebel without a Cause. Dean plays a tough guy who disobeys his parents and the authorities. He always gets the girl, smokes cigarettes, wears a leather jacket and beats up bullies. In the movie, Dean showed what “cool” would mean to American young people for the next 60 years.
Today the focus of “cool” has changed to athletics (體育運動) stars. Often in movies about schools, students gain popularity on the athletics field more than in the classroom. This can be seen quite clearly in movies like Varsity Blues and John Tucker Must Die.
But many teenagers also think being smart is cool. Chess and other thinking games have been becoming more popular in schools.
“Call it the Harry Potterization of America—a time when being smart is the new cool,” writes journalist Joe Sunnen.
(1)If you were considered “cool” in Africa in the 15th century, you ________.
A.thought and acted differently from the majority
B.had a calm and quiet attitude towards life
C.didn't observe rules and authorities
D.had all kinds of “bad” manners
(2)The heroes in Varsity Blues and John Tucker Must Die are likely to be those who ________.
A.do very well in their studies
B.are very skilled at sports
C.are good at chess and other thinking games
D.have supernatural powers like Harry Potter
(3)Which of the following is NOT true according to the article?
A.It is generally considered “cool” to be independent-minded and not to follow the crowd.
B.“Cool” was used as early as the 15th century.
C.Disobeying one's parents and the authorities is considered “cool” among American young people nowadays.
D.Getting the first place in an exam can also be considered “cool”.
(4)What does the article mainly talk about?
A.The origin of the word “cool”.
B.The kinds of people who are “cool”.
C.The changing meaning of the word “cool”.
D.How to be a “ cool” person.

【題目】The reason why so many of us love gift cards—they’re a lot like cash—is also the reason why they can be hard to replace. If your card is lost or stolen, most retailers are sympathetic, but only if you can prove that you actually purchased,or were gifted, the card.
Preconditions(前提) to replace a gift card
1.Keep the card’s receipt or the gift card number.
2.Put the card number in your mobile wallet.
If you can provide one of those things for the retailer, contact the retailer immediately to look up a missing card.Or you can turn to the generous soul who gave you the card for help. Most retailers maintain tollfree numbers, available on the store’s website and staffed by customer service representatives. They can cancel the card and work on issuing you with a new one. Some retailers, such as Simon Malls, can replace cards over the phone as long as you know the gift card number;others, including Starbucks, replace a lost gift card if you registered online.
Replacement fee
If it’s a store card, you may not even have to pay a replacement fee,but that’s less likely with bankissued gift cards.American Express now offers to replace lost or stolen gift cards for free if you have the original card number, but replacing a Wells Fargo Visa card costs 7.50,or 15 for a check cashing out the remaining funds on the card.
Without proof of ownership
Even if you never wrote down the number and the receipt is long gone, you’re not entirely out of luck.If you already used the gift card to shop online, your data may still be stored in your account—and you can spend it down quickly.
【1】You can probably replace a lost or stolen gift card if you .
A. have opened a mobile wallet account
B. have registered the information of the card online
C. write a letter to American Express to explain the loss
D. apply for a new one to customer service representatives
【2】When can you most likely replace your lost or stolen gift card for free?
A. The card is issued by a bank.
B. You have already used the card to shop online.
C. You enter the appointed website to report the loss.
D. You have the original card number of American Express.
