As high school students, Sang Tian and Huang Yunru dreamed of attending one of the world’s top universities. They slaved over their studies and were in the end admitted to famous schools – only one turned out to be far more famous than the other, according to new ranking (排名)of Asia’s top schools.
Huang Yunru, 19, went to the University of Hong Kong, the No 1 school in Asia. Sang, also 19, went to Tsinghua University, which was ranked a disappointing 16th in Asia. When Sang heard the news, he couldn’t believe his ears. “What? How can it be?” he said, greatly surprised.
The new list of Asia’s top 200 universities was published last month by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), a UK-based career and education company. The ranking have started heated discussions among Chinese people, since the mainland’s top two schools – Peking University (PKU) and Tsinghua University – were not in the top 10.
Actually, this isn’t the first time that the schools have gone on poorly in regional or global ranking. The 2010 world university list released by the magazine US News & World Report ranked Peking University at 50th and Tsinghua University at 56th. They were the only two mainland schools in the top 100. Meanwhile, 37 US universities made the top 100 list. And three of 10 Hong Kong universities made the top 50.Chinese universities’ poor performance has saddened many students. “I can’t understand their standards,” said Sang. “At least we are a university with a long, proud history.”
According to the QS list, Chinese universities are doing OK in academic peer review, with both Tsinghua and Peking University scoring a full 100. But when it comes to student-to-faculty ratio(師生比), their ranking drops, with Tsinghua at 22th and Peking at 23rd.John Hennessy, president of Stanford University, said at the Fourth Chinese-Foreign University Presidents Forum in early May that a lack of small-group discussions has seriously affected the teaching quality at Chinese universities. This has also resulted in students being afraid to question or challenge teachers.
小題1:Peking University (PKU) and Tsinghua University were in the top 10 in the ranking of Asia’s top schools.
小題2:There were no top 100 universities in the mainland according to the ranking.
小題3:Hong Kong universities are doing much better than the Chinese mainland ones in the ranking.
小題4:Peking University (PKU) and Tsinghua University are so famous that they are not worried about the result at all.
小題5: One of the reasons for the mainland’s universities’ disappointing ranking is that there are simply not enough teachers for the large number of students.

After a month of feeling upset, Thomas decided he'd better find a way to fight back. He left Canton, Michigan for New York, got a job waiting tables, nicknamed himself the Diabetic Rockstar, and created diabeticrockstar.com, a free online community for diabetics and their loved ones—a place where over 1,100 people share personal stories, information, and resources.
Jason Swencki’s son, Kody, was diagnosed with diabetes at six. Father and son visit the online children's forums(論壇) together most evenings. Every person leaves a footprint. That’s what I learnt when I started to work as a private investigator 10 years ago.People pay restaurant bills with their bank cards, check into hotels or travel around. In every case, they leave a trace. And because of this,I’m able to track them down even when they don’t want to be found.
The first thing I do when I want to find out where someone is staying is to go to the neighborhood where he used to live。It’s human nature to tell stories which is why neighbors will tell me all they know when I ring at their houses.Sometimes, someone even talks about his friend’s dishonesty. Then I produce a pattern of my subject’s life:if he likes to  have a holiday in Spain or in Italy, if he prefers two-or-three-star hotels and where he might hide his assets. When I’ve got this life pattern,I start my research.
Nine times out of 10,I find the people I'm looking for.I once investigated a lorry supplier who owed£500,000 to a subcontractor(分包商)。The subcontractor wanted to find out if it was worth bringing charges against the supplier I found out the supplier had moved assets to his son,who founded a new company offering the same product. It was all done within the law. There was no money to be got from that operation.
However, I asked the son If I could speak to his father and he told me that his parent was on a long holiday in Spain and wouldn’t be back for a while. It didn’t take me long to find out that the father wasn’t in Spain.
I went back to the son and this time he told me that his father might be in Bulgaria, and I found him doing winter sport‘s in a beautiful mountain area.He was living in a big house on a  large piece of land he had bought for£400,000.This was exactly the kind of asset my customer was looking for.
68.We learn from the text that a private investigator is one who           .
A.follows people and reports on what they do
B.helps people start business
C.gives advice to people about the law
D.settles arguments between businesses or companies
69.The underlined word “assets”(in paragraph 2)most probably means        .
A.houses         B.family         C.identity    D.possessions
70.According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE?
A.The author visits the place where his subject used to live in order to find out why he is dishonest.
B.It’s human nature to share some trouble with others
C.The author usually tracks someone’s bank card first if he wants to find out where the man is staying.
D.The lorry supplier moved his asset’s to his son in order to prevent paying back the money he owed.
71.We may infer from the text that the subcontractor might
A.bring charges against the lorry supplier’s son
B.give up hope of settling the debt
C.get his money back
D.sell the big house in Bulgaria

Are morning people born or made? In my case it was definitely made. In my early 20s, I rarely went to bed before midnight, and I would almost always get up late the next morning.
But after a while I couldn’t ignore the high relationship between success and rising early. On those rare occasions where I did get up early, I noticed that my productivity was almost always higher. So I set out to become a habitual early riser. But whenever my alarm went off, my first thought was always to stop that noise and go back to sleep. Eventually some sleep research showed me that I was using the wrong strategy.
The most common wrong strategy is this: You assume that if you’re going to get up earlier, you’d better go to bed earlier. It sounds very reasonable, but will usually fail.
There are two main schools(流派) of thought on sleep patterns. One is that you should go to bed and get up at the same time every day. The second school says you should go to bed when you’re tired and get up when you naturally wake up. However, I have found both of them are wrong if you care about productivity. If you sleep at set hours, you’ll sometimes go to bed when you aren’t sleepy enough. You’re wasting time lying in bed awake and not being asleep.
If your sleep is based on what your body tells you, you’ll probably be sleeping more than you need. Also, your mornings may be less predictable if you’re getting up at different times.
The solution for me has been to combine both methods. I go to bed when I’m sleepy and get up with an alarm clock at a fixed time. So I always get up at the same time (in my case 5 am), but I go to bed at different times every night — sometimes at 9:30pm, and other times at midnight. Most of the time I go to bed between 10-11 pm.
However, going to bed only when I’m sleepy, and getting up at a fixed time every morning is my way. If you want to become an early riser, you can try your own.
60. According to the passage, the underlined phrase refers to ____.
A. people who stay up until the next morning.
B. people who get up early in the morning.
C. people who feel sleepy in the morning.
D. people whose productivity is the highest in the morning.
61. Why did the author want to become a habitual early riser?
A. Because he / she wanted to form the habit of going to bed early and getting up early.
B. Because he / she had found that his / her productivity was higher when he / she got up early.
C. Because he / she wanted to see which of the two main schools of thought on sleep patterns was right
D. Because he / she was told the high relationship between success and rising early.
62. The author experienced all the following EXCEPT ____.
A. going to bed after midnight
B. getting up early occasionally
C. pressing off the alarm to go on sleeping
D. asking scholars for advice on sleeping habits
63. The passage is mainly about ____.
A. how to become an early riser        B. how to have good sleep
C. wrong strategies for getting up early   D. main schools of thought on sleep patterns

It was a beautiful Sunday morning, and Maggie and I were returning from our walk through the woods. We were only a couple of blocks away from home when I suddenly saw a cellphone and a credit card sitting on the road. We took them home. We always find amazing things on the street and she looks upon them as a movable feast—a chicken wing here or a bone there.
I found another cellphone a few years back, too, and called a number in its phone book. I explained the situation to the guy who answered. He said it was his sister’s and that he’d come to pick it up,which he did.
And that was that. No verbal thank-you,no written thank-you,and no “here’s a box of chocolates” thank-you.
I didn't have time to call anyone on my latest found cellphone. I was pouring myself coffee when it started to vibrate(振動)and dance across the kitchen counter.
“Who’s this?”someone asked when I picked up.
“Who's this?" I asked. "Sarah?"
She was surprised at my knowing her name until she realized her name was on the credit card. “Could you send them to me?” she asked. She lives in Arlington, which is 2 miles away from my house.
“Hmm,no. ” I replied, adding that I thought she could come to get them, and that if I  wasn’t at home, they would be in my mailbox.
A day later, when I was out for a run, someone came and took them away. There wasn't even a piece of paper put in the mailbox with "Thanks" on it. In their age of e-mail and cellphone there's really no excuse. Years ago,I found something more precious than a  $100 bill on the street—a driver's license. I saw that its owner lived a couple of blocks from me so I called him up. He asked whether I could slip the license through his front door.
“I guess I could,”I replied.
And that was that.
60. What is the relationship between Maggie and the writer?
A. Wife and husband.             B. Daughter and father.
C. Teacher and student.           D.  Master and pet dog.
6 1. How did the writer know Sarah's telephone number?
A. From her telephone’s phone book.     B. From her credit card.
C. From her e-mail.                    D. From her driving license.
62. The writer wants to tell us      through the unusual stories.
A. we should return the things we picked to the losers
B. we should learn to appreciate others because of the use of e-mail and cellphone
C. people would learn to appreciate persons who provide help)
D. the advance of society makes people lose some virtues(美德)
