This morning I got up early and went to school as usually, only to find there were nobody in the classroom because it is Sunday. “How a bad memory I have!” I couldn’t help laughing. Stand in front of the school gate, I began to wonder what to do next. Suddenly a good idea occurs to me. “Why not get together with some good friends for a picnic in such a fine weather?” I immediately telephoned some of my best friends, but they all agreed to join me. About two hours late, we finally arrived a pleasant park with trees and flowers here and there. We really enjoyed us greatly.

故were改為was。

故How改為What。

故去掉such后的a。

故but改為and。

故arrived后加at。

us改為ourselves。

A cell phone is one of the few things that we hold close to our faces all the time, and yet it could possibly explode – this is what made the recent Samsung’s Galaxy Note 7 smart phone accidents so shocking.

According to technology news website, The Verge, flawed (有瑕疵的) phone batteries might be to blame.

Even if you are not a science student, you probably know that it is common sense that the negative end and the positive end of the battery should never touch. If they do, the battery will short-circuit (短路), causing a powerful electrical reaction that can destroy the battery and cause a fire.

This is why all lithium-ion (鋰離子) batteries – the kind that can be found in many of our devices (電子設(shè)備) like tablets and cameras – have a separator layer inside to stop the two ends from touching one another.

But somehow, the separators in some of the Samsung phones broke, causing explosions.

Overcharging is another problem that can make batteries heat up quickly. Fortunately, most batteries are designed to be able to automatically stop charging once they are fully charged. But again, this somehow failed to happen in some of the Samsung phones.

According to Lynden Archer, a materials scientist at Cornell University, US, we have already achieved 90 percent of the battery life possible from a lithium-ion battery. Customers’ demands that their devices get thinner and their battery have a longer life have given producers little choice but to try to put more power into thinner batteries. However, the more energy you put into a box, the more dangerous it’s going to be.

1A separator layer is put in lithium-ion batteries in order to ______.

A.ensure a longer battery life

B.reduce a certain electrical reaction

C.connect the anode and the cathode

D.prevent a battery from short circuiting

2What are the possible reasons for the Samsung phone explosions?

A.Pushing the limits of batteries.

B.Short circuiting and overheating.

C.Overcharging and thinner batteries.

D.Automatic charging and broken separators.

3What is the writer’s main purpose of writing the article?

A.To describe problems facing cell phone producers.

B.To warn us about the dangers of lithium-ion batteries.

C.To teach us common sense when it comes to batteries.

D.To explain the reasons for the Samsung phone explosions.

Sputnik was the first artificial satellite. It can be described as an aluminium ball with diameter (直徑) of 58 centimetres and weighing 83.6 kilograms, equipped with instruments to measure the temperature and the density (密度) of the atmosphere.Sputnik was launched into orbit around the Earth by the former Soviet Union on 4 October, 1957.Since then, hundreds of artificial satellites have been launched, each with a different purpose.

Some artificial satellites are used for telecommunications, which enable us to make telephone calls to any part of the world, to see live television transmissions and to communicate via the Internet.Other artificial satellites are used for navigation (導(dǎo)航), so that people on Earth can know at any moment the position of an object, within a few metres.Others are weather satellites, launched to observe the state of the atmosphere and to follow the movement of the clouds as they gather. There are also military satellites, for the purpose of gathering information on the weapons and the troops in countries which may be unfriendly and also to indicate the launch of a missile (導(dǎo)彈).

Each satellite has its own orbit which is selected according to its purpose.Communications satellites, for example, have a geostationary (與地球相對同步的) orbit. That is an orbit which turns at the same speed as the turning round of the Earth.Satellites used for weather forecasting pass over the two poles of the Earth.By doing so, a different part of the Earth’s surface is viewed on each successive orbit. All artificial satellites get the energy they need by huge solar panels which extend like wings. These are therefore controlled in such a way that they are always turned toward the Sun.

1The first manmade satellite was sent into space to ________.

A. do research on weather

B. communicate

C. show directions

D. broadcast TV programs

2Which kind of satellites has the same turning speed as the earth according to the passage?

A. Military satellites.

B. Weather satellites.

C. Satellites for communicating.

D. Experiment satellites.

3What’s the same character all satellites share?

A. Circling the earth at the same speed.

B. Providing useful information with the same purpose.

C. Having the same round shape with advanced instruments.

D. Getting energy from the Sun.

Directions: Read the following passage and choose the most suitable statement from A-F for each blank. There are two extra statements, which you do not need.

Life would be a lot sweeter if you were a memory athlete. Most of us however, are not wired that way. But don’t be discouraged: thanks to neuroplasticity, anyone can transcend their fallible memory. 1

There are a few relatively simple things a person can do to help improve their memory function. First up, the basics: the foundation of good memory is good health. 2

Then there are more deliberate approaches like practicing mnemonics. A mnemonic device is a trick designed to make remembering things easier. So instead of remembering to buy eggs, rice, apples and dog food, it might be easier to think of READ, which stands for rice, eggs, apples, and dog food. This is the acrostic method.

3 Let’s use the same shopping list as an example. Instead of focusing on the word ‘rice,’ this technique works by focusing on the image of rice thrown on the ground in a yard. For eggs, picture a hen pecking at the rice, followed by a nearby tree of apple blossoms, the petals falling around the hen, falling on a sleeping dog. Once the interconnected scene is created it’s a simple visual to ease your way around the halls of the grocery store with no list needed. This technique, where you base a memory around visual images, is more formally called ‘method of loci’.

A recent study published in Neuron has unearthed some interesting insights about the brains of competitive memorizers. The researchers invited 23 of the world’s top 50 memory athletes to have their brains scanned in rest states, and while performing memory tests, and matched each champion to a control participant. Anatomically, the scans showed there was no difference in brain structure or region size between the groups. 4 And what’s more, after they gave the ‘naive’ control group training in the method of loci, their neural connectivity began to look more like that of the pros.

A. What you're born with isn't what you're stuck with.

B. Where the difference was observed was in connectivity.

C. Another more complicated mnemonic technique is called a mind palace.

D. Training in method of loci can physically change the way a person remembers.

E. Eating and sleeping right will lead to optimal brain function, the flow-on effect of which is a better memory.

F. The improved memory observed after mnemonic training persists for as long as 4 months after training concludes.

Dear Sir,

Thank you very much for invite me to the summer English course in your school. As for my choice between the two courses, I prefer the four-week course because of this will allow me more time to do some traveling but make a few new friends. Of all the subject I’m learning at school, I like English best. I had been learning English for eleven years but my spoken English remains to be poorly. So I really hope to take this chance to improve them. If possible, I’d like to stay with a family for a couple of days so that I can learn some customs in England, that I’m particularly interesting in. I believe I will have good time this summer.

Yours truly,

Li Hua
