【題目】 Last year, I went WWOOFing (Willing Workers on Organic Farms) at a beautiful organic farm in the south of La Reunion. With WOOFing, volunteers exchange their time and work for food and board. I slept in a cabin in the woods with hedgehogs (刺猬) digging about in the bushes, all different coloured birds singing in the morning and endless rows of palm trees offering shade from the sun.

For me, one of the best ways to get to know a new place is to work with the land, live with the locals and share meals together. It has got to be one of the best ways to travel. It is a mutually beneficial exchange where everyone involved prioritizes people and our planet above profit. You get the time and space to deepen a connection with local communities and nature.

There is a lot to learn and each farm has its own unique way of doing things, depending on the environment, climate and soil. At the farm in La Reunion we planted palm trees to harvest the core of the trunk which can be eaten in salads. Before staying with the farm I had only eaten heart of palm from cans which were nothing in comparison to the real thing, fresh from the ground. When potting up the very beginnings of the palm trees, I felt grateful to be a part of the start of the trees’ cycle. I was filled with awe that something so small could grow into something so big and strong.

Of course, not everyone is able to travel far afield, due to various restrictions or responsibilities back home. The great thing about the skill-share philosophy behind WWOOFing, which prioritizes people above profit, is that it’s something we can all do from our own backyard. That can be swapping French lessons with a neighbour for babysitting, or cooking a meal in exchange for a yoga class. The focus shifts from money to how we can best support each other in our communities. A fair exchange can make a big difference in the world.

1The author loves WWOOFing mainly because .

A.he can get to know new places and people

B.it is one of the best ways to travel

C.he can make profits at the beautiful organic farm

D.he can connect with local communities and nature

2What does the underlined word “prioritizes” in Paragraph 2 mean?

A.Take something more seriously.

B.Treat something more carefully.

C.Consider something more important.

D.Take something for granted.

3Why does the author mention “palm trees ’’again in Paragraph 3?

A.To show that he learns a lot by volunteering on the farm.

B.To introduce the growing process of palm trees.

C.To express his interest in growing plants on the farm.

D.To show his amazement at the growth of palm trees.

4What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A.We should exchange what we have with our neighbors.

B.We can save money by swapping labor with our neighbors.

C.We can benefit each other by exchanging our time and work.

D.We should volunteer to work on a farm to experience nature.

【題目】 The fact that your hair turns grey because of stress is nothing more than an old wives' tale. It's true that stress isn't good for you, but it's not going to turn you into a silver fox just yet. In fact, the answer comes from the cells in your hair. These are what decide the color and, eventually, the fade to grey.

Most of us start to notice our first grey hairs by the time we hit our thirties. A general rule to go by is that by the age of 50, half of the population will have lost the color in 50 percent of their hair.

But why does it happen? Firstly, we need to understand how hair gets its color.

Your hair is made up of cells called melanocytes (黑色素細(xì)胞) which produce pigments (色素) as they grow into the hair fiber. There are two different types of melanins: eumelanins and pheomelanins. The former produces black and brown pigments, while the latter produces red and yellow pigments. The exact amount of these pigments decide whether a person has black, brown, blonde or red hair.

As we age, the ability of the melanocytes to produce more pigments weakens. That's because our hair grows in different periods.

The growing period lasts between three and five years, after which our follicles (毛囊) turn off for about three months to rest and get ready to grow more hairs. This goes round and round and, after a time, our bodies aren't as good at producing new hairs.

Scientists are continuing to try and find ways to prevent greying hair. A team of scientists in France is working to try and stop the melanocytes from being damaged at the end of each hair cycle. They are trying to use a special enzyme () to protect the cells from damage. If successful, it could lead the way for new products that keep our hair full of color for years to come.

1What does the phrase 'an old wives' tale' in Paragraph 1 probably mean?

A.A wrong beliefB.A useful talk

C.A scientific ruleD.A helpful experience

2What do we know about red hair?

A.It doesn’t turn grey as people get older.

B.It contains more pheomelanins than eumelanins.

C.The amount of pigments in it doesn't change over time.

D.People with red hair have weaker ability to produce pigments.

3What do the French scientists aim to do?

A.To repair damaged hair follicles.

B.To protect hair cells against damage.

C.To shorten the hair cycle to protect the hair.

D.To study the relationship between health and hair color.

4What can be a suitable title for the text?

A.Grey Hair: a Symbol of Huge Pressure.

B.Grey Hair: a Symbol of Declining Health.

C.Cells: the Cause of New Hair Growth.

D.Cells:the Cause of Color Change of Hair.

【題目】 People have always had to find ways to keep food safe to eat. Methods to dry, smoke and salt food were invented thousands of years ago. 1 This storage method keeps food safe to eat for long periods of time. Today, canning is one of the most popular methods of storing food.

Clean fruits or vegetables are placed in glass bottles. The food can be put into the bottles either hot or cold. The cold method is used for soft fruits and vegetables that could lose their shape or taste. 2 They take up less space in the bottles.

After the food has been placed in glass bottles, boiling water is poured into the bottles to about three centimeters below the top. 3 The bottles are placed in a large container filled with warm water that is then brought to a boil.

The water must completely cover the bottles, from three to five centimeters over the top. When the water boils, any air in the bottles will be expelled. The boiling continues for several minutes. Then the bottles are allowed to cool. Finally, they are placed briefly into cold water. 4 In other words, a vacuum (真空)is created.

When the bottles are completely cool, notes can be placed on them to identify what is inside. The bottles can then be stored in a cool, dark place at a temperature of between 4 and 21.

5 It is also a good way to store food for six months to a year, or even several years, in case of an emergency. It does not cost much to continue canning every year once the equipment has been purchased.

A.The process of canning is much more recent.

B.This makes a strong barrier to keep the air out.

C.One popular method of canning uses a water bath.

D.Firmer fruits and most vegetables are usually cooked.

E.Canning uses heat to kill bacteria that cause poisons to form in food.

F.Then covers are placed on the bottles, but they are not turned all the way.

G.Canning allows your family to enjoy foods that might not come fresh throughout the year.

【題目】 In 1985, the BMX bike craze was at its height. Every kid in our community was doing tricks on their BMX Raleigh Burner. Every kid apart from two: me and Martin Ogley. Martin was the owner of a purple Raleigh Chopper, and to be seen riding it in 1985 was embarrassing. The kids would knock into Martin mercilessly at every opportunity. And although I didn’t own any kind of bike, I would join in. I knew that by keeping the focus on Martin, I was less likely to be a target.

When other kids asked where my bike was, I would say my BMX was so top-of-the-range that I didn’t ride it on the street. While I knew it would not hold up forever, I wasn’t too worried. The New Year was coming and, after months of complaining to my dad, I was confident that a BMX would appear.

On the New Year, I was disappointed to see Martin playing at the end of our street on what was clearly a brand-new BMX. As we entered the house, my eyes were drawn to where my presents were piled up. There was a bike. A purple Raleigh Chopper. You see, in the week before the New Year, my dad just happened to be drinking in the local working men’s club with Martin’s dad, who was eager to sell an old bike after buying his son a new one.

It wasn’t until I was in my 30s that we were in that same working men’s club and I reminded my dad of that year, the year of Martin Ogley’s Chopper. I thought he wouldn’t remember the whole thing, but he did. And so I asked him the question: How the hell did I end up with Martin Ogle’s Chopper? And my dad smiled and said as though it were the most obvious thing in the world, “Well, because you were mean to Martin.”

1Why did the writer join the kids in treating Martin badly?

A.To protect Martin.B.To be friends with them.

C.To get Martin’s bike.D.To avoid being the focus.

2Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined words “hold up”?

A.Work.B.Stop.C.Fail.D.Stay.

3How did the writer’s father get the purple bike?

A.He bought it from the market.B.He got it from Martin’s father.

C.He asked Martin to give it away.D.He exchanged it with his friend.
