Diane Arbus is known for creating intense black and white photographs of very unusual people. She used a special camera that produced square shaped images. One art expert said Diane Arbus turned photography inside out. Instead of looking at her subjects, she made them look at her.
Diane Arbus was born in 1923 to a wealthy family in New York City. After finishing high school at the age of 18, Diane married Allan Arbus. Mr. Arbus worked in the advertising department of her father’s store.
It was Mr. Arbus who gave Diane her first camera. Diane soon decided to take a class with the famous photographer Berenice Abbott. The Arbuses eventually started taking photographs of clothing. These images were used as advertisements for Diane’s father’s store. After the birth of their daughter, Doon, the Arbuses started a business together. Their purpose was to photograph clothing fashions. Diane Arbus was the stylist. She would prepare the hair and faces of the fashion models who wore the clothing being photographed. Allan Arbus took the pictures.
The couple soon had jobs from important fashion magazines such as “Vogue” and “Harper’s Bazaar”. Their work was very successful during the 1950s. They became part of a group of artists that were helping to redefine visual culture. They were breaking with past traditions to create a new look for a new decade, the sixties.
But Diane was not satisfied with her secondary role. She wanted a more active part in making photographs. She wanted to explore her own artistic expression and freedom. To do this, she stopped working with her husband. Then she started taking photography classes at the New School in New York City.
Arbus’ teacher, Lisette Model, influenced her in many ways. She showed Diane how to use a camera like an expert. She also taught Diane to use her art to face her doubts and fears. Miss Model once said that Diane soon started “not listening to me but suddenly listening to herself.”

Many years ago my student asked me the question, "Mrs. Kindred, why do you teach?" Without taking time to reflect, I answered, "Because someday I might say something that might make a difference in someone's life." Even though I was sincere, that wasn't a very good answer and my student didn't let it slide.
"Let me get this straight," he said, "You went to college for four years so you could come here every day because you have the hope that someday you might say something that will influence someone?" He shook his head as if I were crazy and walked away looking confused. I'm one of those people who look back and wish they had said something smart or witty, or swift.
Even though that particular student might no longer wonder why I teach, there are days when I wonder. On those days, I remind myself of the real reasons I teach:
It's in my blood. My mother was my most influential teacher, and she was a 6th grade reading teacher until her death in 1990. She instilled(逐漸灌輸) in me a love of reading and the knowledge that education opens doors.
Teaching is a way to make a difference. If you throw a stone in a pond the ripples go on and on until they reach the shore. You can't have ripples without a "stone." Good teachers throw stones that make a positive difference, and that's what I strive to do.
I genuinely love teenagers. I want to share with others what I know and what I have learned through the years. Life is full of ups and downs, and if I can help students avoid some potholes on the road of life, I want to do so. If they'll allow me to celebrate their victories with them, I want to do too.
Teaching isn't for everyone, but I know I made the right career choice.
小題1:Why did the student continue to ask the question about the writer’s being a teacher?
A.Because he thought her answer was unbelievable.
B.Because the writer was insincere.
C.Because the student was naughty.
D.Because the answer was difficult to understand.
小題2:What do you think of the writer?
A.Stupid. B.Honest.C.Conservative.D.Polite.
小題3:According to the text, which of the following is NOT true?
A.The writer’s mother has the greatest influence on her.
B.The writer’s answer made the student confused.
C.In the writer’s opinion, some people in the world are unfit to teach.
D.The writer annoyed the student who asked the question.
小題4:We can infer from the text that _________.
A.the writer was also a good teacher in school
B.the writer often plays with her students beside a pond
C.the writer devotes herself to teaching and her students
D.the writer often accompanies the students on their way home
小題5:What’s the main idea of the text?
A.A student’s silly question.B.A good teacher who likes students.
C.A confused student.D.The reason why I teach.

Before a new type airplane goes service, every part of it is tested again and again. But there are two tests that are more of into important than the others.
The first is called the “tank test”. A modern airplane must fly very high in the sky. Air must be pumped into the plane so that the passengers can breathe. The metal structure of the plane has to be very strong for this reason. When the plane is filled with air, the air presses against the skin of the plane inside. The pressure(壓力)on a small window is like a huge foot that is trying to get out. If a small part of the plane were to fail, the plane would explode in the sky. To test the structure of the plane, the plane is lowered into a huge tank or container of water. Then it is filled with air. The pressure inside the plane is greater than it ever will be when it is high up in the air. Finally, there is an explosion. This does not cause so much damage inside the water tank as it would anywhere else. Engineers can discover which part of the plane has broken. Then that part is made stronger.
The most dangerous test happens when the new plane is going through test flights in the air. The test must find out exactly what happens when the engines(發(fā)動機(jī)) are all shut off at once. The plane begins to fall like a stone. It is the pilot’s job to find out how he can get control of the plane again. These two tests are examples of how planes are made safe before they ever carry passengers.
小題1:By doing the “tank test”, the engineers can find out ____.
A.the amount of air in the planeB.the strength of the plane structure
C.the pressure inside and outside the planeD.the power of the airplane engines
小題2:What will happen to the plane under the “tank test”?
A.It will be brokenB.It will be made stronger.
C.It will be filled with water.D.It will be tested by pilots.
小題3:According to the text, why are test flights most dangerous?
A.The plane may explode in the airB.The pilot may lose control of the plane.
C.The engines may be damaged.D.Too much air may get into the plane.
小題4:What might be the most suitable title for the text?
A.Two Important Tests on AirplaneB.The Importance of Flying Safety
C.The Danger of Testing AirplanesD.How Airplanes Are made and Tested

For some time past,it has been widely accepted that babies—and other creatures—learn to do things because certain acts lead to “rewards(報酬)”,and there is no reason to doubt that this is true. But it used also to be widely believed that effective rewards, at least in the early time, had to be directly connected to such basic physiological(生理的) “drives” as thirst or hunger. In other words, a baby would learn if he got food or drink or some sort of physical comfort, not otherwise.?
It is now clear that this is not so. Babies will learn to behave in ways that produce results in the world with no reward except success in sight.?
Papousek began his studies by using milk in the normal way to “reward” the babies and to teach them to carry out some simple movements, such as turning the head to one side or the other. Then he noticed that a baby who had  had enough to drink would refuse the milk but would still go on making the learned response(回答) with clear signs of pleasure. So he began to study the children's responses in situations where no milk was provided. He quickly found that children as young as four months would learn to turn their heads to right or left if the movement “turned on” some lights—and indeed that they were able to learn some more turns to bring about(產(chǎn)生) this result, for example, two left or two right,or even to make as many as three turns to one side.?
Papousek's light experiment was placed directly in front of the babies and he made the interesting observation that sometimes they would not turn back to watch the light closely ?although? they would “smile and speak” when the light was on.Papousek concluded that it was not the sight of the lights which pleased them.It was the success they were achieving in solving the problem,in mastering the skill, and then there is a basic human nature to make sense of the world and bring it under control.?
小題1:According to the writer, babies learn to do things which _______.?
A.will satisfy their surpriseB.will meet their physical needs?
C.a(chǎn)re directly connected to pleasureD.will bring them a feeling of success
小題2:Papousek noticed in his studies that a baby _______.
A.would make learned responses when it saw the milk ?
B.would continue the simple movements without being given milk ?
C.would turn its head to right or left when it had enough to drink?
D.would carry out learned movements when it had enough to drink ?
小題3:In Papousek's experiment babies make learned movements of the head in order to _______.
A.be praisedB.please their parents?
C.be rewarded with milkD.have the lights turned on ?
小題4:The babies would “smile and speak” at the lights because _______.?
A.they succeeded in “turning on” the lights?
B.the sight of lights was interesting?
C.they need not turn back to watch the lights?

Deserts are found where there is little rainfall or where rain for a whole year falls in only a few weeks' time. Ten inches of rain may be enough for many plants to survive (存活)if the rain is
spread throughout the year, If it falls, within one or two months and the rest of the year is dry, those plants may die and a desert may form.
Sand begins as tiny pieces of rock that get smaller and smaller as wind and weather wear them down. Sand dunes (沙丘) are formed as winds move the sand across the desert. Bit by bit, the
dunes grow over the years, always moving with the winds and changing the shape. Most of them are only a few feet tall, but they can grow to be several hundred feet high.
There is, however, much more to a desert than sand. In the deserts of the southwestern United States, cliffs (懸崖) and deep valleys were formed from thick mud that once lay beneath a sea more than millions of years ago. Over the centuries, the water dried up. Wind, sand , rain, heat and cold all wore away at the remaining rocks. The faces of the desert mountains are always changing –-very, very slowly ---as these forces of nature continue to work on the rock.
Most deserts have a surprising variety of life. There are plants, animals and insects that :have adapted to life in the desert. During the heat of the day, a visitor may see very few signs of living things, but as the air begins to cool in the evening, the desert comes to life. As the sun begins to rise again in the sky, the desert once again becomes quiet and lonely.
