The two features of life in England that possibly give visitors the worst impressions are the English weather and English cooking. 1 former is a natural phenomenon and nobody can do anything about it. But cooking is something 2 can be learned. English food has often been described as 3 (taste). Recently, the situation has changed somewhat because so many people have been spending their holidays abroad and 4 (learn) to appreciate unfamiliar dishes. One of the traditional complaints about English food is the way that vegetables are cooked. The only way that many British housewives know to cook green vegetables is 5 (boil) them for too long in too much salt water and then to throw the water away so that all the vitamins are lost. To make matters 6 (bad), they do not strain the vegetables sufficiently so that 7 appear as a wet mass on the plate.

However, it would be unfair to say that all English food is bad. Indeed not only the raw ingredients are usually 8 very high quality, especially the meat and fish, 9 many traditional British dishes are as good as anything you can get anywhere. A visitor, 10 is invited to an English home might well enjoy steak and kidney pudding or pie, all sorts of smoked fish .

1

故填The。

2

故填that。

3

此處為and連接的并列謂語(yǔ),根據(jù)上文so many people have been spending their holidays abroad and可知為現(xiàn)在完成進(jìn)行時(shí),故填learning

5

分析句子結(jié)構(gòu)boil在句中應(yīng)用非謂語(yǔ)動(dòng)詞,且本句中修飾上文The only way應(yīng)用不定式。故填to boil。

6

此處指代上文the vegetables應(yīng)用代詞they。故填they。

8

此處表示原料很好應(yīng)用“be+ of+ n.”

短語(yǔ)為not only…but(also)…。故填but。

10

Work started this week on next season’s flu vaccine (疫苗), with experts working off forecasts about which types of the flu virus will be making the rounds. But don’t expect any improvements. Flu experts are already admitting that most vaccines will give at best basic protection, because they’re based on old-fashioned technology. It’s not a new problem, but one that the slow-moving world of drug and vaccine production seems helpless to improve upon.

Every flu vaccine is a cocktail, aimed at either three or four of the most common flu types. Flu vaccines must be recreated every year because flu viruses develop constantly in a process called antigenic drift. In February, global flu experts gather to trade notes on what viruses are circulating in different countries and to come to an agreement on which types the next vaccines should be made to target.

In recent years, flu vaccines have been based on H1N1, H3N2 and either one or two types of influenza B virus. Each of these has a “reference” type, which is used to make seed virus. Producers add the seed types to eggs and incubate () them as the virus grows. Then they purify the virus, and either weaken it or kill it to make a vaccine.

Using eggs is a tricky (=difficult) and unpredictable process. Sometimes the virus doesn’t grow well in eggs, which can mean less vaccine than expected. The result is a flu vaccine that doesn’t offer much protection. “As long as we have eggs we are going to have this problem,” said Scott Hensley, a flu virus expert, “The only solution is not to depend on eggs.”

Flu is a major killer. The 2017-2018 season has been a severe one, hitting the entire U. S. with widespread influenza infection (感染) at once for weeks on end, and killing 97 children so far. Against this threat, even a less satisfying flu vaccine will definitely help. “Even when you have these mismatches it will not prevent infection but likely prevent disease severity,” said Hensley.

1Next season flu vaccine fails to improve because ______.

A. it has offered the best protection

B. experts can’t forecast the flu types

C. it is based on outdated technology

D. experts are unwilling to respond to changes

2According to Paragraph 2, flu experts ______ in February.

A. exchange views on the virus types next season

B. get together and make a deal on vaccines

C. sign an agreement on vaccine production

D. decide on how to circulate the viruses

3The risk of using eggs to make vaccines may be that ______.

A. seeds are less likely to get protection

B. viruses might not be developed as expected

C. there are not enough eggs to be used

D. whether vaccines will grow is hard to predict

4What message does the underlined sentence convey?

A. The U. S. is faced with serious flu attacks.

B. Egg-based vaccines are better than nothing.

C. There is something wrong with flu vaccines.

D. Flu vaccines can stop the disease spreading.

Even if you wake up every day with a perfect smile on your face, it can easily be ruined by the difficult people you meet at your workplace. You can’t avoid them because they are already part of your daily life. They make your day stressful which gives you a terrible feeling to leave the work immediately. 1 I will share a few effective strategies which will help you to deal with these difficult people.

Don’t take it personally.

Difficult people see others’ opinion as conflicting (沖突) to their belief. Their behaviour is already a habit to them so if you take it personally, they may even plan to make your life more terrible. Remember the problem is not only with you.2

Listen to what they say.

Sometimes what difficult people want is someone’s attention and love. There are also difficult people who don’t even speak but will just throw you with sullen ( 慍怒的) looks to make you feel uneasy. 3 The thought of you standing there and waiting for a response will make them feel uncomfortable and they will just decide to speak up. If they do, listen carefully and analyze it.

Don’t get discouraged.

I have already told you that it would be really difficult for you to change their behaviour but never give up. It should be you affecting them and not them affecting you.4 They would not interfere (干擾) with you again. If they realize that, you can already enjoy your stay in the office or in the school.

5

Instead of dealing with their pessimistic attitude every day, try to look at what advantages these people have. That way, they will start to like and appreciate you. Also, they won’t give you cold stares any more.

A.See what’s good in these people.

B.Choose topics that you both like.

C.Difficult people are sometimes suffering from low self-esteem (自尊).

D.If this happens, ask them and wait for a minute until he or she speaks.

E.What’s worse is that they can even make your enjoyable day unhealthy.

F.There must be many people who feel annoyed with their unpleasant behaviour.

G.Once they feel that you are different and they can’t beat you, they’ll learn to become distant.

Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.

Are you still disappointed at your failure? Stop sighing, and change your mental model.

Change your view on “success” and” failure”.

Most people have the following mental model: SUCCESS—YOU—FAILURE. 1but what if you change that model? YOU—FAILURE—SUCCESS. Instead of for viewing failure as something to be avoided, turn it into a “steppingstone” on the path to success

Increase your failure rate.

If it is true that the more we fail ,the more we succeed then your immediate goal should be to intentionally increase your failure rate! 2Intentionally increasing failure means the more people tell you “no”, the closer you will get to ultimate success.

Set “No” goals.

3But how about setting goals for failure? The exciting aspect is how it keeps people “in the game ”when they are “red hot”. If all you have is “yes” goals and then you slow down or quit when you are successful, the hot steak end .But if you keep going when you get the “yeses” of life, the sky is the limit

4

If the key to success is to increase our failures, then it makes sense to celebrate our setbacks. Yes, you heard right: if someone turns you down, celebrate it! Instead of mentally punishing yourself for not succeeding, buy yourself ice cream and say ,”I am one step closer to success ! ”Stop letting failure have a negative impact on your thoughts and emotions.

A.See courage as a muscle

B.Celebrate your failures.

C.Everyone sets success goals

D.With this thought in mind, you are succeeding even when you fail

E.All the courage you need to achieve success is already in you ,just waiting for you to take action

F.They see themselves in the middle, and do everything they can to move toward success and away from failure
