Neither television nor radio nor magazines nor books nor any other medium can begin to match newspapers for depth and breadth of coverage (新聞報道). In fact, all these media themselves depend on newspapers to bring them information that they then process and distribute as their own brand of news.

Now many newspapers are locked in a struggle for survival. If they lose—which is by no means impossible—we all lose.

The great task for editors and publishers is to respond to the competitive challenge caused by online news, and at the same time use their own online news to increase their profits (利潤). As yet, they haven't figured out a smooth and sure way to do that.

So they cut some more to get profit. The cuts in size that they are making are in some cases risky and in others without considering the results. With every cut, publishers tirelessly argue that readers won't even know the difference. The trouble is that by the time customers do notice that they are getting less for their money,it will be too late—too late to notice the reduction in the number of readers.

The other big cuts, of course, are in staff (員工). The victims would be the oldest and most experienced workers because they are the highest paid. While there is plenty of tired deadwood among them, there is also a lot of talent.

When experienced staff leave in large numbers—as they often do now—the newspaper loses great professional memory. But the real loser is the readers, who are suddenly robbed of the insights (見識) that only the experienced reporters can bring.

As for the future, there is at least one big, bright sign:intelligent young people will continue to flood into journalism in urgent search of jobs, despite its high demands and modest (不太高的) pay.

According to statistics published by the University of Scranton, about 45 percent of Americans usually make New Year’s resolutions------and the most popular resolution is losing weight. Of those who make resolutions,a mere 8 percent achieve them.

___1.___ Are we just setting ourselves up for failure? Learn how to make realistic resolutions and how to overcome the roadblocks along the way.

Setting a resolution to lose pounds isn’t a goal that’s achievable now. It may be a good long-term goal. ___2.___ Registered dietitian Elisa Zied says”… to be real when you make a resolution. It’s okay to shoot for the stars like making a resolution, but why not set a smaller goal and train smart?”

The same concept applies to weight loss. ___3.___ These goals should help develop healthy habits that will finally help achieve your long-term resolution.

Notice that these goals are simple and achievable. “Instead of going from zero to 60,from never going to the gym to going four to five times a week, why not start with three days a week, get consistent and build from there,” Zied says. Set yourself up for success and map out your course by making appointments with yourself to be active. ___4.___

You also need to be aware of your current exercise and eating habits to make achievable goals. Keeping a diary of your food and exercise habits can help. Record everything you eat and drink for three to five days and review it. ___5.___For example,if you notice a tendency to snack on unhealthy fare, set a goal to eat a fruit or vegetable with each snack. So you think you know your dog. But how well does your dog know you? She probably recognizes you when she sees you. But can a dog tell by simply looking at you whether you have a happy or an angry expression on your face? Researchers in Austria have taught pet dogs to know the difference.

Dogs are very mindful of sound. When dog owners shout or speak in a strong, harsh(刺耳的) voice, dogs often act guilty and quietly move away from the area. Researchers have found that dogs can look at our faces, and tell the difference between a smile and a frown. The animals were able to recognize a look of approval from one of disapproval.

Researchers performed a series of experiments. They taught dogs to recognize facial expressions. They showed the dogs two pictures of either the upper of lower half of a person’s face. On one picture, the person looked happy. The other appeared angry. The dogs were then shown images of the eyes or mouths of people they had never seen before. They were also shown the left half of the faces used in training. Once the dogs learned to recognize which image was happy or angry, they could easily identify the same expressions in pictures of any face.

Corsin Muller, who led the study, says future studies will try to show whether dogs can learn the meaning of facial expressions—for example, whether a frown shows that someone is angry. “What we can say with our study is that they can tell these ones are different. But what we cannot be sure of at this point is what exact meaning they are associating with these different expressions.”

“Of course it seems likely that they would associate (聯系)some positive meanings with the smiley face and they would associate some rather negative meanings with the angry face. But what exactly they are associating with these expressions we cannot know at this point.” Corsin says.

1.The passage tells us mainly about _____________.

A. how dogs communicate with each other

B. What are the best ways to train our dogs

C. Why it’s necessary to know our pet dogs well

D. whether dogs can recognize our facial expressions

2.We know from the second paragraph that a dog_____________.

A. pays little attention to its owner’s looks

B. has to be trained to recognize our voices

C. is very sensitive to its owner’s voices

D. will feel guilty if their owner frowns

3.According to Corsin Muller, it’s been proven that dogs know_____________.

A. the exact meaning of a frown

B. a frown is an angry expression

C. human looks carry different meanings

D. a smiley face may have negative meanings

4.In which part of a website does the text probably appear?

A. Technology. B. Education.

If doctors want to test you for something, they’ll usually take a blood or urine sample (尿樣). But wouldn’t it be much more convenient if they just asked you to breathe through a special instrument?

In fact, your breath can say a lot about you. In traditional Chinese medicine, doctors draw a conclusion about the health state of a patient based on the smell of his or her breath; trained dogs and rats can identify the smells of the breaths of people suffering from certain cancers; traffic police also monitor drivers’ alcohol consumption by testing their breaths.

Just like blood and urine, your breath contains lots of “ metabolites ” --- the waste chemicals that the body produces, which vary from person to person. They are like personal health fingerprints, which is why scientists sometimes call them “ breath prints”, according to Science Daily.

Compared to blood or urine testing, breath testing takes only seconds instead of hours, and it requires neither a needle nor a container to hold the body fluids (體液). This means the test can be taken frequently to better detect early signs of diseases and monitor the progress of a medical treatment.

On the other hand, as an identifier, you might think that breaths are not as reliable as fingerprints since they might change based on what you eat. However, researchers in Zurich, Switzerland mapped 11 healthy volunteers’ chemical patterns by having them breathe through a special instrument, and they found that each pattern was unique and the patterns didn’t change much throughout the day, reported BBC.

“Our goal is to develop breath analysis to the point where it becomes competitive with the established analysis of blood and urine,” said Malcolm Kohler, professor at the University Hospital Zurich.

1.According to the text we know that __________.

A. breath varies from person to person based on food

B. your breath may give you away if you are not careful

C. doctors can test one’s breath to find about his illness

D. dogs can identify people with certain cancers

2.In comparison with blood or urine testing, breath testing is __________.

A. comfortable and convincing

B. traditional and reliable

C. accurate and competitive

D. quick and convenient

3.What is the author’s attitude toward breath testing?

A. Doubtful. B. Approving.

C. Unconcerned. D. Worried.

4.What can we infer from the text?

A. Breath testing is reliable and may have a bright future.

B. Blood or urine testing will be less used in medical treatment.

C. Doctors have found the best way to detect early signs of diseases.

D. Traditional Chinese medicine is becoming more and more popular.
