Five Steps to Better Handwriting
Some kids love handwriting, but others hate when it’s time to put their pen to paper. Maybe they are worried about their handwriting. Are you one of them? 【1】 Here are five steps that really work!
Get a great grasp
Try this—hold your pencil at the top and try to write your name. Pretty hard? But when you hold your pencil the correct way, writing is much easier. 【2】Hold it in place with your thumb, and your index(食指) and middle fingers.
Let the lines be your guide
Lined paper is your friend! Those lines can help you create letters that are the right size and proportion(均衡).【3】 Also be sure to fill up the lined space completely. Those capital letters should be from the bottom line to the top one.
Slow down
If your writing is hard to read, try slowing down a little. If you rush, it’s hard to control where you stop and start your letters.
Lower the pressure
【4】 That makes it harder to make the smooth lines. Try easing up and don’t hold the pencil too tightly.
【5】
Lots of games require you to write or draw pictures. So even though it’s not schoolwork, you’re still using the skills you need to control your pen better.
A. Play games.
B. Ask for more advice.
C. So “a” should be half the height of a capital “A”.
D. You’ve been writing since you were a little kid.
E. Some kids press down really hard when they write.
F. The good news is that just about everyone can improve their handwriting.
G. The best way to hold a pen or pencil is to let it rest next to the base of your thumb.

【題目】Jimmy is an automotive mechanic, but he lost his job a few months ago. He has good heart, but always feared applying for a new job.
One day, he gathered up all his strength and decided to attend a job interview. His appointment was at 10 am and it was already 8:30. While waiting for a bus to the office where he was supposed to the interviewed, he saw an elderly man wildly kicking the tyre of the car. Obviously there was something wrong with the car. Jimmy immediately went up to lend him a hand. When Jimmy finished working on the car, the old man asked him how much he should pay for the service. Jimmy said there was no need to pay him; he just helped someone in need, and he had to rush for an interview. Then the old man said, “Well, I could take you to the office for your interview. Rocking the chair back and forth, he asked, “Do you really need to be interviewed?” Jimmy’s heart sank. “With the way I look now, how could I possibly pass this interview?” he thought to himself.
Then the interviewer turned the chair and to Jimmy’s surprise, it was the old man he helped earlier in the morning. It turned out he was the General Manager of the company.
“Sorry I had to keep you waiting, but I was pretty sure I made the right decision to have you as part of our workforce before you even stepped into the office. Hello Russell,
How are you? I didn’t see you in class last week, and your sister told me that you had a cold. Are you feeling better now? Mr. Carlson teaches us some new things in math class, and they’re really hardly. I took lots of notes, but I’ll let you borrow them.
Anyway, I wanted to talk to you about a event called Safe Town. The Graysville Fire Department is going to have special classes to young kids for one week in March. In it, people from town will teach the kids about road and bicycle safety. Someone came to our high school on Wednesday and talked about them. They’re looking for people to teach the classes, and I’m really interesting in it. I thought you might be, too.
They need people to help teach the safety lessons to kids ages 4 to 7. In order to join, our parents need to sign in a special paper. We won’t get pay for it, but our homeroom teacher says that it will be good experience. Also, does these kinds of activities can help you get into a good college. Let me know what you think!
See you,

【題目】Flight cancellations(取消) and loss of luggage can ruin even the best-planned holiday. The key to a stress-free trip is having a backup plan.
Fly non-stop. The worst problems involve connections, so it is important to take non-stop flights whenever possible. If you do have to make a connection, try to route through a southern city, where snowstorms and de-icing delays will be less likely. Always allow at least two to three hours for flight connections.
Check the weather. Check the weather in your connecting city, not just the arrival and departure city. If your departure flight is cancelled because of weather, you can go home or back to your hotel. Airlines promise to get you on the next available flight, not the next flight. That could be several days later on a sold-out holiday weekend.
Go early. The earlier in the day you fly, the better your chance of getting rebooked the same day after a missed connection. It will also put you ahead of stranded(滯留的) passengers who arrive later.
Rebook immediately. As soon as your flight is delayed or cancelled, get on the phone and rebook your flight instead of waiting at the ticket counter. If your rebooking is delayed, call or ask your travel agent to find a seat on another carrier, and then ask your original carrier to endorse your ticket to the new airline. Airlines are not required to do this but often do. Learn more at www. dot. gov/ airconsumer/ fly-rights.
Ship bags. A few days before your flight, ship suitcases or holiday gifts to your destination by a documented express service. It’s preferable to losing bags because of re-routed flights and sometimes cheaper than paying airline overweight bag fees.
Know your rights. Airlines are not required to compensate passengers for delayed or cancelled flights, but it never hurts to ask for goodwill vouchers(折扣) for meals, taxis or a room.
【1】When making a flight connection, it’s common that you’ll___________.
A. stop in the south B. choose a good city without snowstorm
C. be trapped in the storm D. wait for two or three hours
【2】The suggested way for you to rebook your flight is___________.
A. through the phone B. by waiting at the ticket counter
C. by changing another airline D. by surfing the Internet
【3】The underlined word “compensate” in the last paragraph can be replaced by “___________”.
A. pay B. ask C. host D. treat
【4】What’s the best title of the passage?
A. The Worst Problem in the Trip.
B. The Preparation Before the Flight Trip.
C. How to Book the Plane Ticket.
D. How to Plan the Holiday.

BEIJING — Rising smartphone star Xiaomi is moving up market and taking aim at Apple's iPhone. The Chinese maker known for low-priced phones on Thursday unveiled (發(fā)布) a new model that Chairman Jun Lei said is comparable to Apple's iPhone 6 but thinner, lighter and much cheaper. The phone starts at 4, 499 yuan ($575), less than half the 5,488 yuan ($ 865) price of an iPhone 6 in China.
Xiaomi, founded in 4010, passed South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co. in the second quarter of last year as the best-selling smartphone brand in China by number of phones sold. The company is expanding into India and other developing markets but has yet to announce plans to enter the United States or Europe.
Xiaomi “is a respected brand that already has an Apple-like following” in China, said analyst Brian Blair, who tracks mobile device makers at Rosenblatt Securities. Apple is still a relatively small player in China, selling about 45 million iPhones there last year, Blair estimates, but will continue to grow.
“Apple is very much a premium (高端的) brand,” said Blair. “The company that's more at risk is Samsung, which has been losing share in that market.”
Privately held (私人控股的) Xiaomi said last year's sales tripled to 61. 1 million phones and revenue (收益) more than doubled to 74. 5 billion yuan ($14.4 billion). The company, based in Beijing, recently completed a round of fundraising from investors that it said valued Xiaomi at $ 45 billion, making it one of the world's most valuable technology brands.
Xiaomi ran into legal trouble in India in December after a court blocked sales while it hears a complaint by Sweden's LM Ericcson that the Chinese company violated its patents(專利).
In a blog post earlier this month, Lei called the case a “rite of passage” (成年禮) for a young company.

A. More than 45 million iPhones will be sold this year.
B. Xiaomi can beat Apple in the market of China.
C. He thinks Xiaomi is superior to Apple.
D. Samsung will be closed for losing share in the market.
【3】 How is the 5th paragraph developed?
A. By giving examples.
B. By analyzing cause and effect.
C. By providing data.
D. By making comparisons.
【4】What's the attitude of Jun Lei towards the case of Xiaomi in India?
A. Negative.
B. Satisfied.
C. Positive.
