You may ride on your bicycle in a rush to get to school every morning. You may fight to get a bit of space on a bus or in the subway. You may also watch taxis crawl their way through traffic jams.
No matter where you are, all big cities around the world have traffic jams these days. But although they all have their problems, many cities also have a type of transport that has become a cultural icon (文化標(biāo)識(shí)).
In London to avoid the traffic above ground, people use the “underground”,also called the “tube”. The city has the oldest and most complicated underground railway system in the world and is the pride of many Londoners. With 12 lines and 275 stations across the city, the tube, is normally the quickest and easiest way of getting around London. In London, you are never far from a tube station.
New York is famous for its yellow cabs. They serve as a quick and easy way of getting across Manhattan, where the subway doesn't take you everywhere. Stopping a cab is easy; just stick out your arm like you do in any city. But,with over 12,000 yellow cabs in the Big Apple, they also cause traffic jams.
Since 1873 when the first cable car started public service, the slow and noisy vehicle has been a symbol of San Francisco. Although once damaged by a serious earthquake and challenged (挑戰(zhàn)) by cars, it is never caught in traffic jams and provides better views than the subway.
But there are no such symbols in Los Angeles. If you visit you'd better rent a car. The city's public transportation is terrible. It can take hours to get across town by bus. The subway covers just a small part of the city center. The light rail line only runs between the Long Beach hotel area and the city center. That's why Angelenos love their private cars more than any other people in the world.
1.If you have a chance to London and want to avoid the traffic jams, you'd better ________.
A. ride vehicle B. take a taxi
C. use underground D. rent a car
2.People in Los Angeles like their private cars because of the following EXCEPT that ________.
A. the public transportation is terrible
B. it is not expensive to take a private car
C. the underground railway covers a small part of the city center
D. people have to spend hours getting across the Los Angeles by bus
3.The passage mainly tells us ________.
A. how big cities in the foreign countries keep on moving
B. how people in the city avoid the traffic jams
C. why London has the oldest and complicated subway
D. why people call New York the Big Apple

Dear Editor,
I am really angry with my parents recently. Next Sunday is my birthday. My parents promised to buy a cell phone for me as my birthday present this year. But now when I ask about the birthday present they say they have changed their ideas, because they worry about my study if I get a new cell phone since the final exam is coming soon. They say a cell phone may take up too much of my time. I believe I am old enough to control myself, but they don’t believe me. What’s more, they broke their promise!

He is both a great director and a great animator (卡通片制作者). He is Japan’s Walt Disney.
Hayao Miyazaki, the 72-year-old Japanese master of fantasy animation (奇幻動(dòng)畫(huà)), one of the most respected animation directors in the world, announced his retirement on September 6. Here are some key words about his films.
Good and evil (邪惡)
Miyazaki rarely tells stories in simple good and evil. The worlds he creates tend to be complex (復(fù)雜的) and unclear. The bad figures often don’t seem so bad once you get to know them. Miyazaki has explained that the lack of clear good and evil is because he sees the 21st century as a complex time, in which old ideas need to be re-examined, even in children’s films.
Children
The heroes in Miyazaki’s films are usually children or teens, more often young girls. Sometimes they can see the spirit world; they are curious and friendly, even to strange creatures. The stories often deal with growing up.
Sky and water
Two of Miyazaki’s great loves are the sky and water, and he uses them in related ways. Flight is a forever theme — Miyazaki has never done a film without flying of some kind. His imagination seems to fly and leave behind the pull of gravity (重力), a force and control that he feels a bound (束縛) from setting him free.
Water is another way for Miyazaki to fight gravity. In his films he likes the unexpected floods with crystal-clear water, and objects floating on the surface seem to be supported by magic.
Peace
Miyazaki’s negative view of the war goes far more than surface deep. Violence is usually seen as wrong and painful, and Miyazaki’s heroes are often peacemakers.
1.What can we know about good and evil from Miyazaki’s films?
A. The figures cannot be simply judged as good or evil.
B. He uses his films to show good finally defeats evil.
C. The complex time tends to turn good into evil.
D. Children should learn to clearly tell good from evil.
2.According to the article, children in Miyazaki’s films are ______.
A. all little teen-aged girls B. always able to see spirits
C. curious trouble makers D. kind to people and creatures
3.Miyazaki’s love for flight may come from ______.
A. the relation between sky and water
B. his hate for gravity since his childhood
C. his desire to be free from gravity
D. his love for water that can flood the world
4.In Miyazaki’s films we may NOT see ______.
A. the appealing castle in the sky
B. children with the problems of growing up
C. objects magically floating on the water
D. a world left in ruins in the end
